Five terrific titles I would recommend, somewhat arbitrarily, that could be considered "must-sees" (though whether any film fits into that category is always subjective) include:

Kurosawa is a safe bet for me. I enjoyed all of the above very much to be honest. The era of the film is not an issue for me. Upon reading the description of M, I was immediately drawn in, although it seems there aren't a lot of reviews out there. You're the first to recommend The 400 Blows, although it looks nice as well. 8 1/2 and Orpheus seem to be popular as well.

400 blows is a must! It's a beautiful movie. I think the reason no one mentioned it already as it is too obvious of a choice, like 7 samurais or the 7th seal. Movies that start with a number are guaranteed to be great .

I would be in the camp that would rather see something like It Happened One Night over the likes of Mr. Smith but what about the Why We Fight series? I know of them but have only seen tiny clips over the years but it sounds like that could make an interesting set.

At the very least it seems like it would be a zillion ways they could go with supplements. Propaganda itself can be pretty boring but the subject is pretty interesting, no?
