Seems like guessing time . I don't know what to expect. December is usually a small month. Last year was great because of the Suzuki upgrades. Don't think they will strike gold twice this year (Not the best year for them anyway). So here is what I think is possible:

- Tati "duo": Jour de Fete and Les Vacances de Monsieur Hulot/Mon Oncle (Upgrade(s)).
- Truffaut "duo": The Soft Skin and Jules et Jim (Upgrade).
- Brazil (Upgrade).
- Y Tu Mama Tambien (New).

Not saying they will release all of them but it seems to me like all of the above are "possible". Not a really exciting month for me (Unless we get the Tati or the Truffaut). I really want to be surprised, closing the year with a big title. I want The Cranes are Flying and Taste of Cherry but I am being too wishful. I am almost certain those aren't "priorities" which is a shame.

Let hope they don't use the same Pathe restoration for the eventual Le Samourai release just because "They HAD to".
Ive seen yo mention this several times... How many restorations do you think are going to happen? Thy are very time consuming and costly — especially with all the work put into this one, fixing tears, replacing missing frames, etc. They don't just do full on restorations every year for fun. The fault isn't in the restoration, but in the filtering afterward.

Yep, and it's inexcusable.

Not many, I guess. That doesn't remove the fact that the release is disappointing. At least Les Visiteurs du Soir looks good.

While I do favor films with no manipulation, part of me really likes what I've seen so far regarding the title, especially with the subdued blacks — the film always had a dreamy quality and that seems even more apparent now. I'll see how the filtering plays in motion, since screen caps never tell the full story. I imagine on a medium-size 60" TV like mine, I won't notice many of the "issues." besides, I already sold the DVD, but if I have to re-buy it used on eBay, then I guess I'll do that and own both.

Just blind-bought Umberto D. Never seen it surprisingly but I'll be shocked if I don't end up enjoying it in some way.

- I think the over-the-shoulder camera worked quite effectively here. I know some people complain it's hard to watch but I was fine with it. It makes things more personal (I think part of the way Black Swan was filmed was inspired from this film).

- The mother-daughter relationship was really painful. Rosetta functioned as "mother" for her drunkard mother.

- The characters really need swimming lessons! There are two scenes where they can barely tread water. The second of which Rosetta considers letting the guy drown. I'm glad she didn't as it would've killed all sympathy for her character.

-The film is a gem and it comes from a small idea. I really love films that do this. A lot of money isn't needed if there's a great idea and a visionary director(s)

Very much enjoyed my viewing experience. I have to catch-up on some more films (plus, the big one arrives next week - Lawrence!) then I'll double back and watch this again.
I'm looking forward to this. The only Dardennes film I've seen is their latest, The Kid With A Bike, and I loved it. It brought my mind into a similar space as the Italian neo-realists. Time to dust of my DVDs of Umberto D, Il Posto and Bicycle Thieves.

FYI Amazon.fr shipping costs are ghastly. 11 euros for one disc on my latest order. Yet I had two discs sent from Amazon.de for under 3 euros.

(I'm holding out for a Criterion Band of Outsiders upgrade myself, but I did preorder the French Gaumont La Chinoise.)

I'm going to guess the same Traffaut duo as you. I think The Life and Death of Colonel Blimp will be a December title also.

Yes. I would *love* to see some Truffaut upgrades. But I'm tired of predicting them, The Soft Skin in particular I've been looking for every other month for a while now.

me too... It's almost 2 years that I'm waiting for some new Truffaut blu-ray on Criterion...
and The Soft Skin since most than 1 year since I saw the post about a restoration and the theatrical in NY...
I cross the fingers, incantations candles and everything for... so it will be not announced on Friday ? we'll have to wait 'till Monday ???

by the way, another Veronica Lake title on Criterion - the first Veronica Lake on blu-ray would be more that welcome : I can't wait to see "I Married A Witch" on blu-ray

Blind-ordered it two days ago. Looks wonderful from the short U-Tube clips I've seen~ just hope I can enjoy watching it even as I'm agonizing over the question of what will eventually become of the little dog!!! Even the Italian neo-realists wouldn't let anything bad happen to it, surely. Would they?

And a while back Twilight Time said they requested it and were turned down.

Nothing is done until, well, it's done but this one keeps looking more and more solid.

Please don't tease me like this! I'm having a bit of a bad morning as Tork has a sick hard drive and Sony support isn't so wonderful. I basically had to order a new drive from Newegg as its far easier to deal with that than trying to get any help from Sony and my laptop isn't even a year old. I think it was the fact I put A Safe Place/Drive, He Said in the BD drive, it knew ASP was crap and got sick from it.

I will preorder the crap out of In a Lonely Place if Criterion gets it.

You know better than this. That disc belongs with a beverage on top of it.

But I wanted to look at something in the Drive, He Said portion of the disc! I thought that part might have been ok, because Drive, He Said isn't all that bad. It's not good, but I like it enough to watch it once in awhile. Obviously poor Tork thought otherwise, and just reacted violently to ASP being on thr same disc. . Newegg is shipping me a new drive as we speak. Tork's getting some extra muscle with the new drive as it's 7200RPM and 750GB as opposed to the 5400RPM 640GB drive that's gravely ill right now.

Yeah, Drive, He Said is beginning to grow on me
[Show spoiler]Gabriel's naked expedition in the science lab with the bugs, rodents, and snakes still skeeves me out though, because I'm not a fan or roaches or snakes.
Harold is still an *******, although I can draw a lot of parallels between him and Jimmy from Quadrophenia now.
