They look a little classier than the standard blu-ray case. At least we don't have to worry about Criterion using eco cases or anything like that.
Also, I'm not a big fan of the blue cases. I get that it signifies blu-ray, but for me it still marks them as 'other' and DVDs as 'normal' or 'standard'. Blu-ray should be the standard now!

Criterion's designs aren't always perfect but I respect them for trying to stay unique and think their cases are classier than other blu-ray cases for sure.

The troll amuses me though, if only because he keeps buying things and giving them away to 'friends' because he hates the case. It's like, did you not see an image of the case before you bought it? If it mattered that much to you, for some reason, then you're an idiot for buying it in the first place.

just picked up the game. Its only my 3rd CC movie, but I love Douglas and all the "wealthy dark characters" that he plays. I love the transfers that criterion does so I'm sure this will be just as good. Watching this bad boy tonight

Agree, but still opinion. Stating it like it's a fact doesn't necessarily make it so.

Tree of Life was the best thing I saw in 2011. But again, it's only my opinion.

It really isn't that I have to have them all, but actually that I want to have them all. I've been collecting the Criterion Collection since the inception of their DVDs back in 1998/1999. I trust them. I'm legitimately interested in all of their releases. Some more than others, sure, but I am never sorry to spend money on Criterion. I just make sure I utilize as many sales as possible.

There's a reason that between DVD, Blu-ray, Eclipse and the few non mainline titles in the Essential Art House, that I have almost 400 of them.

They seem to ship things very quickly. When I sent for replacements for CARLOS and WHITE they got the discs to me really quickly. I sent the discs in on a Saturday and by Friday I had the correct discs in my hands.

I understand, I just find while many of these are good movies some of them I just would really not that often to make it worth while. My main trouble is that I was a bit nuts back in VHS/laserdisc/DVD days. I ended up with so many movies and when I took a step back so many of them were only watch once and then spend years collecting dust. It's really not for me now, I just go for those I really want and watch. I rent the rest or manage to get them on the movie channels I have on cable.

Shell's post above is a much needed reminder that I have not yet sent in my White or Carlos discs for replacement. I seem to recall reading several months ago that people were first sending an email to Criterion's customer service, then waiting on their response before shipping. I have come down with CRS* since then, so would someone please confirm the process?

Thanks!

Would like to know what you think. I really like it, but it's rarely ever discussed here.

I watched Badlands today and I enjoyed it but the editing is weird. Every scene fades out like it's going to a commercial break. Very good movie though.

What is everyone going to do if Warner releases a Special Edition of the film on Blu ray? Is it still going to be expected to be a Criterion release. Is the "C" on the cover really that important if there is a excellent WB release?

This obsessive love for the film and Malick is insane. Yeah, it is a very good film. But there are so many others that are just as good or better from better filmmakers.
The copyright holders are Badlands Productions or something like that.

If WB released it on BD instead of Criterion, I would still be happy.

White Material rarely is discussed. Here is what I wrote about it back in April.

The acting is good all around, especially Isabelle Huppert as Marie, the willfully stubborn and blind-to-reality matriarch trying to hold on to her colonial coffee plantation in an un-named African country as civil war arrives at her doorstep. The cinematography is lovely and bold. The story was intriguing.....at first. But as the movie progressed, I became less and less interested, even as the dread and tension were ramping up. This a decent drama, i suppose, but something really seemed missing for me. By the end, I found myself not liking it at all. None of the main characters is sympathetic or engaging (which is the point, I suppose). Mostly they are just irritating. About half-way into the run time something occurs that marks a watershed event.

Major Spoiler Alert!! Do not click if you haven't seen the film.

[Show spoiler]The loafish son, who looks and acts like he grew up in Huntington Beach, Ca, instead of Africa (no offense to HBers who read this, but I used to live there and that is what he reminded me of), goes off into the bush alone and gets waylaid by some boy soldiers. This event causes him to go all Travis Bickle, shave his head, grab a shotgun, and disappear until, near the end of the film, he reappears trying to join the gang of child soldiers terrorizing the neighborhood. I guess his mum should have let him sleep in as late as he wanted.

He then leads this gang of hellions back to the plantation to find their revered leader who is being given shelter there, if you can call it that. Then the son makes sure to take out his old man (thanks for nothing, Dad). The child soldiers gorge on candy and prescription pills, then fall asleep among strategically placed children’s toys so that the viewer is reminded, you know, that these are kids and stuff even though they carry AKs and randomly shoot people.

The final moments are pretty inexplicable, one of those shock endings that doesn’t make a lot of sense. I suppose there is some allegory in it, and you could make an argument that it represents colonial whites self-destructing amid the madness, but it just did not work for me. I guess the flabby father-in-law deserved what happens to him for walking around most of the film shirtless. Isabelle likely would have come crashing through the roof after climbing up on top of a freshly burned-out house, but that doesn't happen. Even if the roof were still intact enough to support her, it damn sure would have been frying pan hot. No wonder she gets pissed.

Mind you this is all done with very fine acting and camera work. There are moments, a few scenes here and there, that are quite moving. But the movie left me not feeling much of anything when I don’t think that was the intent. In the end, I found White Material to be a flawed, finely acted, beautifully filmed drama that I have absolutely no desire to see again.

I have never seen Hard Eight, but it would fit in with the recent-ish trend of releasing early films by current directors. And, with The Master in theaters now, Criterion might be able to time the release with the blu-ray release of The Master.
I was wondering when Criterion would think about a Paul Thomas Anderson Blu-ray. I figure if they do it will be Hard Eight or Punch Drunk Love, and I would really love PDL on Criterion. But I certainly wouldn't complain if Hard Eight gets the CC treatment.
