Went with the following:
Brazil In the Mood for Love Lonesome Rashomon Weekend (1967) Lonesome is a very rare blind buy for me, but I really like the late silent / early sound era films, and I figure 3 films for $20 is a good risk. |

Went on a bit of a bender:
The Wages of Fear The 39 Steps Videodrome Breathless Harold and Maude Rosemary's Baby A Night to Remember In the Mood for Love The Complete Monterey Pop Festival The Gold Rush Playtime Three Wicked Melodramas Eclipse $290. I fear I'll have spent another 500-600 before the sale is done. |

Been a long time since I've been in here...
![]() Sorely tempted to pounce on The Qatsi Trilogy, as I have a feeling it won't stay discounted; too bad there is SFA for coupons right now. EDIT: Just caved, as this should be an absolutely incredible Blu-ray. Last edited by McCrutchy; 10-30-2012 at 07:31 PM. |

Credit cards are charged when the item ships, though you might see a hold of ~$1.00 on your account periodically.

Pre-ordered: Purple Noon, Brazil, and Rashomon. Upgrades of the second two.
Is it true that the Universal release of "Brazil" is a different release than the final version that Criterion released? If so, any thoughts if it is worth picking up (if the price ever gets nice)? |

The Universal Blu-Ray is the 132 minute US Theatrical Version. The directors cut is 142 minutes and the Television version, or the "love conquers all" edit is 94 minutes.

Universal released (132 min) something close to the US theatrical cut on Blu-ray. 20th Century Fox released (143min) a Blu-ray close to the european theatrical cut in France, UK, others? It is about 10 minutes longer than the US Blu-ray. Both of them are very good ... I have seen the Criterion cut on DVD. The UK Blu-ray is region free. Is the UK cut the same as Criterion's cut? At times I think the "Battle of Brazil" could have been the product of a temper tantrum on the director's part. Wasn't he contractually obligated to deliver something with a runtime of less than two hours? "The Battle of Brazil" was a supplement on Criterion's DVD release and may be carried over to the Blu-ray. You can also read about it for free in the L.A. Times. Criterion's supplement is essentially the L.A. Times' reporter talking about the story he wrote. If Criterion's release is as good as the US and UK Blu-rays, you should enjoy it. I also posted this in the Recent Haul thread:
[Show spoiler] We lost power yesterday due to Hurricane Sandy, but I went out today because I was getting so bored and annoyed without anything. I hit up Barnes 'N Noble first and I got 40 Criterions (36 Blu-Ray and 4 DVD). The woman was nice enough to split up the orders so that I could apply the two coupons per order. They didn't have America: Lost And Found, Broadcast News, Cronos, Ice Storm (DVD), Magician, Repulsion, Sisters (DVD), Sunday Bloody Sunday, or Three Colors Trilogy, so I'll probably order those nine (a nice chunk of these are early Christmas gifts). I then went to Best Buy in hopes of just getting The Campaign and Misery (with the $2 off coupon) and I had a $5 off reward zone certificate. Although the Misery coupon didn't work, I ended up also getting The Others ($4.99) and Unforgiven DigiBook ($14.99). The store let me price match the $14.99 sales price of the standard BD. I'm still waiting for my The Man Who Fell To Earth Criterion, The Silence Of The Lambs Criterion, and The Third Man Criterion to come in. I was really happy that Airport and Harvey were 50% off on Amazon today too. |

I ordered a musical, "South Pacific," today.
I am interested in "Rosemary's Baby." I want to be sure that Criterion's presentation (supplements) of "Rosemary's Baby" aren't self-serving or one-sided, considering the release date. I am interested in why it's considered a horror film. Is it a public horror (Satan's loose making babies) or is it a personal horror (Rosemary is ill)? I don't really care whether they take sides (in the supplements), as long as they consider the possibilities. Roman Polanski, on Paramount's DVD, said that he deliberately made ambiguous whether Rosemary was suffering from what he called "post-partum crazies" or had fallen prey to a bunch of Satanists. Should he have said "pre-partum crazies?" Anyway, that is what makes it an interesting movie for me. There may be a genuine Paramount release coming in the UK ... it's in the database. I am also interested in Rashomon ... Last edited by joie; 10-30-2012 at 09:25 PM. |
