It is definitely going to be upgraded, sooner rather than later. Back on 5/30, Kim Newman posted this on Facebook:

Personally, The Blob is my most wanted movie for a Criterion upgrade.

Has anyone who ordered Rashomon from Barnes and Noble received their copy yet? Mine still has an expected ship date of November 6.

Picked up a New copy of America Lost and Found: The BBS Story (BD) for 70$ off a guy on Craigslist.

It has an interesting amount of films, can`t wait to check out Easy Rider and Last Picture Show

Barnes 'N Noble has a 50% off sale on all Criterions, so you could have technically got it for $43.25 (50% off = $62.50, 10% off for a BN membership brings you to $56.25, and after an $8 / $40 coupon and a $5 / $50 coupon, you could have gotten it for $43.25 - not including tax).

Amazon themselves has had it for $52-$55-ish in the past too.

Two great movies. Still Walking left me all warm and fuzzy without horrible Hollywood sentimentality, and I really enjoyed the complexity of Summer Hours -- globalization, art, family. Nice Fall viewing.

I live in Canada. I don`t have a B&N membership, or have any stores in my vicinity :P. I didn't mind paying an extra 15/7.50.

No ... but I did pick up the Complete Monterey Pop set from B&N for $28 + change. Not quite the same deal.

I did check with the Best Buy closest to me to see if they had that deal in store, but they didn't. Rats.

That is everything prior to the Nov. 13th titles of course.....

Anyone who keeps detailed info have a break-down of Films, including/excluding supplemental material, Spine #'s, Director break-downs, country, etc.. ?
If I remember correctly, David Blakeslee, who writes the Criterion Reflections blog, once said on a podcast that he had a spreadsheet with all of that information for every Criterion release. I think he also said that if you emailed him he would share it, so you might try that.

After over a year of not having copies of two of my favorite films of all time I went ahead and re-bought the DVDs of Jules et Jim and The Passion of Joan of Arc - so when these get announced as upgrades next week - don't forget to thank me.

So here's a question that I'd like to hear some of your speculation on.

StudioCanal recently acquired the Tati's and BFI rushed Blus out.

Does anyone think Criterion will try and release Blu-ray editions of Mon Oncle & M. Hulot's Holiday anytime soon? How about the long rumored Jour De Fete?

I realize these are all in release from BFI, but I would love to see Criterion release them even if it's for a short time.

I just got the Chidren of Paradise blu-ray and skimmed through a bunch of scenes which all looked excellent by the way. After all the bad reviews and screencaps, I was expecting Predator DNR version, but in motion Children of Paradise looks amazing and is a huge upgrade over the dvds.

I've been wondering the same thing and I've been holding off on getting the BFIs for this reason.
Life's tough having choices in two regions
I've said it before, but this secrecy business of Criterion's is frustrating.
Same problem for those that bought Ivan's Childhood or worry that Jules et Jim is about to be upgraded.

I've had to hold off on Jules et Jim during these sales too. One of my most-wanted upgrades, which I have a feeling might be upgraded soon (only a feeling though). The Hulu+ stream has had to suffice for now.

The Passion of Joan of Arc should be upgraded via Criterion sometime during the next year.

But yeah I'm with you on just straight up buying some of these DVD titles that I've been wanting. For example, I'm probably going to pick up Lubitsch's Trouble in Paradise and von Sternberg's The Scarlett Empress during this sale, as I have most of the BDs that I really want and these DVDs can be had for really cheap with the discount, coupons, and my membership.

Gaumont only announced their 4 year plan to restore much of their catalog 6 months ago, and it includes nearly 300 films, Passion of Joan being one of them. So a Criterion release could be anywhere from 2013-2015 (and then some; they didn't put out Rashomon for 3 years after its new transfer was finished).

The only reason Joan is seeing a BD release in the UK is because the distributors sorted their own restoration. I guess it's possible they'd be willing to licence it out to Criterion after a year of exclusivity, but I imagine Criterion would rather wait for Gaumont's restoration anyway.

So buying the DVD is probably a safe bet for some time

Might as well hold off and see what happens. Criterion will either announce upgrades for them or announce Playtime is going OOP. If the latter happens you can quickly snag the BFI Blu-rays.
