I'm leaning towards it because I enjoyed Rosetta and La promesse, just not sure for a pre-order or a sale. I'm hesitant on Chronicle of a Summer, so I think it might be a sale title rather than a pre-order. Definitely getting Sansho, Narayama, and Waterfront for preorders.

To be honest I want Badlands... but it feels like a hot summer film to me. Not that their Summer title in feb means anything.

I really need to check Rosetta and Promesse out from my library. I suspect I will really enjoy them, but am being more cautious with blind buys right now.

Narayama is new to me (I'm a poseur!) so I'm glad to have something fresh to read up on and consider. Not that it is crucial, but I find the cover very inviting.

I've never seen On the Waterfront but this in an exciting release. Other than that, this month doesn't do much for me.

With On the Waterfront, is the 1.66:1 on one disc and the other two aspect ratios on the other? It's already discounted from $50 to $37.

And on a completely different note, I'm assuming you saw the newsletter clue pointing to Badlands but do you realize its full implications?

I'm going to wait to see if you can guess where I'm going with this cause I think you might...

I completely agree. Although, once those are announced, it'll just be something else we have to hear about for months.

Criterion is finallly getting back on track, these announcements are slowly but steadily making me forget about this year . Really great month, here we finally have something for everyone and not just one crowd or the other. On the titles then...

The Ballad of Narayama - Yes, yes, yes ! Finally more Kinoshita on the mainline and the comeback of the beautiful lower-priced films proving again my point that, at this price, Criterion is more willing to put stuff that may not see the light of day otherwise, just like this year's lower priced titles.

The Kid with a Bike - More Dardenne is always good so this choice is perfect for their usual "contemporary" title. I hope The Son eventually sees the light of day from either Criterion or New Yorker.

On the Waterfront - The only title I will probably skip but that doesn't mean I am not happy with it. It is a good addition to the CC and I am sure this is their "big seller" for the month and so everyone wins .

Chronicle of a Summer - Best surprise of the month along the Kinoshita. This is a definite buy for the next sale and I am happy Criterion is releasing another documentary, there aren't enough of those. The film is also incredibly important and a signature of the cinema-verite.

Sansho the Baliff - The Criterion gods have heard us, a Mizoguchi is FINALLY hitting the BD format and I couldn't be happier. Great choice for the upgrade of the month and a light of hope for things to come (The Life of Oharu, PLEASE!) Will get both, the CC and the MoC as both have strong things going for them. Really, really pleased by this one.

At the end, my only complain would be the lack of an Eclipse Series set but that would be cynical seeing such a varied and balanced month from them. Great month .

I ordered all three titles as well and they actually shipped them on the evening before the release. I'm in Canada though so I won't see them for 3-4 weeks anyway.

Just in case it hasn't been posted, went to BN and the salesperson told me the Criterion sale will be extended till the 29th.

Also, excited about the Jean Rouch. Anyone who truly appreciates film will appreciate this release.

This should look spectacular. It was shown in the Classics section of the Cannes Film Festival, and the feedback was overwhelmingly positive

Chronicle of a Summer and On the Waterfront are on my definite must buy list. Saw both of them in a film class in college and loved them.

On the Waterfront finally!!!! Also Sansho the Bailiff. Those two alone make it an amazing month for me.

The Ballad of Naranyana also sounds interesting, I've never seen it but considering its' a "barebones" release I might pick it up. I've loved almost every Japanese film I've picked up via Criterion on blu-ray - so I will probably grant them wide latitude and just blind buy this one as well (hopefully it's a competent 4K scan and makes for an eye popping blu-ray). Chronicle of Summer sounds like it could be good for those with a special interest in politics, or french history. Not so sure it would be my cup of tea as far as something I'm going to BUY and watch multiple times.

The only one that I really have no reaction at all to is The Kid with a Bike. I don't keep up with every NEW independent or foreign film, so I know nothing about this one at all.
