Excellent choice! The train station in the movie is the same one you would take to visit Ozu's grave. Very fitting (and and excellent film).

I really want to buy the When Horror Came to Shochiku eclipse set but really don't want to spend money on DVDs that might be released on bluray at some point - it's why I've held out on buying some of their DVDs. Is there any plans to ever upgrade the eclipse line because I don't want to double dip here.

And what about titles like the Teshigaraha box set? The Killers '46, '64 set? The Friends of Eddie Coyle? Le Samourai? The Naked Prey? I've wanted to own these for years now.

I wish I knew what titles they were going to upgrade.

I think it's safe to buy that set--I don't see them releasing it as an Eclipse set just last month if they could have released any of those titles individually.

Kino has already released Die Nibelungen here in the US. Is there some problem with the release vis a vis the MoC release? I don't get out much and might've missed something.

I need some help, folks. I bought the CC of Fear & Loathing, only for it to not work on my Blu-ray player. I get the loading screen of the logo in the top left corner, but it stays there for hours. This is the first movie my player hasn't played, but it works perfectly on my other players. Faulty disk, perhaps?

This may be worth a shot: plug a USB into your player. For a couple of my discs I need to do this, but never a Criterion.

As far as replacements go, Mulvaney (at CC) was kind enough to replace two discs that I had for months but had not yet watched. He should help you out.

Thanks. I didn't want to buy it if there were leaks that they were going to release their eclipse sets on bluray some time soon.

Or clear out the "persistent memory" or whatever it may be called in your player's settings.

The Killers 46' and 64' both look fantastic on DVD from Criterion. Both great prints that look very well upscaled. I would almost say that would be worth a pick up. Le Samourai looks great too but I would except an upgrade on that title sooner than later.

Just got home from the theater after watching Michel Franco's Despues de Lucia, the Mexican pick for the Oscar and winner of the Certain Regard Prix this year. I really liked the film and it nicely follows the recent minimalistic approach Latin American cinema has taken. The treatment given to the story is raw and restless while keeping things at control at all the time. The film is entirely composed of still shots (Except for one or two I seriously felt out of place) and has a great rigor to them. I think that's what I liked the most, it almost feels as "academic" cinema if there is even such a thing. The characters were all believeable but the ending turned one or two of them in a really farfetched way. The film was great for the first 2/3, a great character study on the effects of bullying at school and the acceptance of losing someone you love. Then it all took a huge turn which I liked at first but grew incresingly "meh-ish" torwards the end. The final shot is definitely a highlight but the way it fitted the story actually damaged it. Worthy winner of the accolades it has gotten but I have seen better. Lake Tahoe, Parque Via and other films in the same vein are all better as a whole but Despues de Lucia gets points do to the original way it tackles its subject and the high-quality professionalism it displays at all times. If you can catch it (If it gets nominated for the Oscar I am sure it will have at least a limited theatrical run) go and see it, a suitable and welcoming spot to current Latin American filmmaking .

Better set and quality perhaps? As with Criterion, I trust the MOC releases 100 %. Anyone who buys the Eureka titles knows how extraordinary their releases are so buying over Kino I think is definite in the case of Die Nibelungen, for those that can play it.

Someone will correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't the only difference that the documentary is subtitled in the MoC and the same documentary has english voiceover in the Kino?

I preordered the MoC, so I have that already. But if I did my homework, I think I would have preferred being able to make a sandwich during the extras.

I have nothing against the Kino edition, but as I'm in Australia and I'm region-free I have my pick of both editions.
The video/audio packages are close enough and they both have the same restoration documentary, but the Masters of Cinema edition comes with a 56 pages booklet.
Also, I'll admit this: I do love the cover of the MoC

Add me to that list. Would love to see some more Powell and Pressburger released by Criterion. The Life and Death of Colonel Blimp anyone?

Also would like to see The Fallen Idol get a Blu treatment. I know that's Carol Reed, but as long as we are making wish lists!
I'm guessing Criterion doesn't have the rights to The Fallen Idol as it's no longer in print on DVD: http://www.criterion.com/films/346-the-fallen-idol

I just emailed and suggested Mr. Nobody to be added to the collection! I hope they release another New Year's Eve drawing with next years titles on it again.

It is a shame, because MoC clearly put a lot of work into their booklets, but I will always forget about booklets. Maybe because I watch stuff mostly in the dark. Or maybe I was just raised wrong.

If Kino keeps dragging their feet and not release an upgrade to "Dersu Uzala" they should give the rights to Criterion and lets get a stunning upgrade out for this masterpiece!
