I think Criterion, or someone affiliated, stated Badlands would not be released until around May. Don't quote me on that, just in case.

My guesses:

The Passion of Joan of Arc (upgrade)
Tokyo Story (upgrade)
All About my Mother or Talk to Her
Persona or Wild Strawberries (upgrade)
Carrie (1974)

I will have to watch the rest of them, I only watched the introduction feature so far. I did read that fact in the booklet, however, and I was really impressed by how great it looked.

One of the things I thought about was--It's as if the film is stronger because it was made exactly when it was--otherwise it could have lost some of that perfect subtlety.. and yes, the closeups were fantastic. Just the lighting alone in each of them effortlessly portrayed the state of the characters and served a purpose.

That's a perfect description of the viewing experience.

That movies looks interesting. I have the DVD somewhere in a box that I plan on trading in at F.Y.E., but I don't feel like digging for it lol.

That was my response to Black Narcissus, too. Great film, very intense. The British really know how to do repression.

(For geopolitical represession, try the Sabu! Eclipse set; for psychosexual + geopolitical, try Four Feathers)

And I was surprised to learn how much of Black Narcissus was done on stages and with POG, too. The film holds up well under multiple viewings.

It's the artistry of P&P that make me judge Korda so harshly.

Just saw The 39 Steps for the first time and I enjoyed it very much. Hitchcock is my favorite director of all time and this film, while not as polished as his later masterpieces like North by Northwest (which by the way, it was fun to realize how much that film owns to 39 Steps) is tons of fun. If I have a minor gripe with the film is that Robert Donat’s performance was a little bit stiff in some parts but that’s just me. A highly recommended film all around and I can’t wait to watch all the fantastic extras included.

Thanks for the memories!
I was going to watch In the Mood for Love tonight but I think I’ll watch Late Spring instead to honor his memory (besides I’ve already seen In the Mood many times whereas Late Spring is a first).

Friggin Barnes and Noble! I just got an e-mail from them saying that Purple Noon and Brazil have had a "change in release date" and that they will let me know if they can't ship them in the next 30 days. I should have just cancelled the order back when Amazon had Brazil for 5 bucks less!

Edit: scratch that, they still are cheap on Amazon, I am cancelling the BN order, what a joke!

I liked 'The Life Of David Gale" too. Very harrowing film and it had my emotions on edge. Very thought-provoking too.

Even though there's a very good UK edition out, I'm not sure Criterion will re-issue this until the just-announced NEW restoration is finished.

And I wish they owned Persona, so my bet is on Wild Strawberries first.

If the transfer is as good as this one looks to be, that would be great!

I doubt we will see Foreign Correspondent yet. Too soon since the last Hitchcock hasn't even come out yet.

It would be a perfect time though another Chaplin movie. Criterion, if you're listening, I would like own City Lights before I die. That's not too much to ask right?

Monsieur Verdoux will be the next Chaplin film they release, unless they release more than one at a time.

I'll take that too. Even though its one of them Talkies.

They'll never catch on.

Can't be far away now. The UK ITV edition is now available and apparently an excellent transfer. Dreadful cover though

I never saw that, but I'd love some of the earlier films from his CV.
For my honours thesis (so many years ago ) I wrote about Calendar, The Adjuster and Exotica, with emphasis on the latter two.
I haven't seen any of them for years, because the DVDs were not worth getting: too average and too expensive.
I'm very tempted to pick up the Canadian edition of Exotica, but there are also mixed reports about that transfer.
