I like horror the most and I know Criterion releases lesser known films so I don't really know where to begin. It's nice to have real people recommend something than go in blind.

Thanks!

I thought Antichrist was very good and one can make a credible 'horror' argument pretty easily.

I'm not sure it's a great blind buy candidate though. Even setting aside the graphic content, Lars is pretty much a poster boy for YMMV.

Then again, I bought it blind and really liked it so...

Seen clips of Antichrist. That was my first pick for my first Criterion since I'm most familiar with it than others. Heard about the deer and the fox and that kind of turned me off a bit. Not big on violence towards animals, even in film.

Nosferatu has been on my want to watch list for awhile. Will have to get around to it.

And well worth repeated viewing for the commentary.

I'm seeing that Criterions come with a booklet of a few essays. Are those any good?

I'm leaning towards Rosemary's Baby. I may have to pick up something else as well!

One of the films I recommend to anyone who asks me for recommendations.

BTW guys, expect a Spartacus announcement tomorrow. I finally caved and bought the Universal disc. It usually happens when I buy the DVD or crappy Blu release, the next day or two an announcement is made. You're welcome.

FYI: On the German Lynch set, the extras are encoded in PAL, so you need a player that can convert PAL to NTSC, like my OPPO or a bunch of other region A players. They are not region-locked.

BTW, I am reading all the Dunham comments and it goes to show how far Hollywood has gone for 'original content' ....

Well, even if she was never in the Criterion Collection, I can't stand her work. I've mentioned before...I can't stand how she's had all these advantages over other filmmakers her age..to do some rather unoriginal work about people with non-problems who think they have problems....acting as if it's a representation of today's real 20-year olds. It's just not what I like. What's wrong with me being honest about that? I mean...it's just my opinion.

The tv talk makes me curious..what are you guys' (as 'Criterion regulars' here) favorite current series?

"The Blob," coming soon, may be your best bet. It will be popular, too, unlike some of what Criterion churns out.

  • Fat Girl
  • Ivan's Childhood
  • Kes
  • Leon Morin, Priest

  • Two-Lane Blacktop

  • Walkabout
  • World On A Wire

Well, you really can't go wrong with a Criterion film. Tiny Furniture is the least popular among the majority of people and many individuals do not believe that it deserves to be in the collection, but that's a different story.

Anyway, the Criterion Collection specializes in lesser known films and culturally significant films. They remaster them in the best picture and audio quality possible. The most popular are:
  • Anatomy Of A Murder
  • Army Of Shadows
  • Brazil
  • Children Of Paradise (it has the worst quality in the collection)
  • Double Life Of Veronique
  • Fanny And Alexander
  • The Game
  • In The Mood For Love
  • The Killing
  • The Last Year At Marienbad
  • M
  • Modern Times
  • Night Of The Hunter
  • Paris, Texas
  • Paths Of Glory
  • Rashomon
  • Rosemary's Baby
  • Seven Samurai
  • Three Colors Trilogy
  • Videodrome
  • Wages Of Fear

From my own personal experience, I would recommend Days Of Heaven, Down By Law, Following, The Game, The Killing, Repulsion, Rosemary's Baby, The Thin Red Line, and Traffic.

Yes; I forgot this one because I don't own it - definitely pick this up too if you can. If you're a "horror" fan, most of these will just turn you on and then mess with your head and turn you into a film fan in general. I'm not sure if any of them can be considered just horror films.

Announcement eve!

It seems to always come up so fast. Now that Badlands is out of the way will this month finally give us Y Tu Mama Tambien?

My big want for this year is Life Aquatic but rumors point to a summer release for that one.

I am just wishing to be pleasantly surprised.
