Yessss. Add 'Picnic At Hanging Rock' and it would be the best day ever for Blu-ray announcements.

So, Two-Lane Blacktop...

A really great surprise! Fitting that I recently watched The Thin Red Line and Days of Heaven, as this seems very in line with Malick's style. Minimal dialogue, stunning cinematography and compelling characterizations.

Just all around great film. I read very little about it, other than Oates being great in it, so seeing James Taylor and Dennis Wilson was a massive surprise.

Seems like I'm going to have to check out some of Hellman's other films.

Sherlock is probably my favorite current series. Actually, no probably about it. It's superb on every level.

[Show spoiler]The Hour, Downton Abbey and Homeland had very good to excellent first seasons and good to very good second seasons. Boardwalk Empire started a little slow for me but has picked up a little steam.

Breaking Bad is still pretty good but it definitely peaked. Same with Mad Men and Walking Dead (season one was okay, season two really grabbed me, season three (so far) kind of squandered all the points S2 earned). Dexter started sliding after season four and is at best mediocre now. I still enjoy True Blood but I dunno, it's getting close to overstaying its welcome too.

Comedies - like I said, Veep is really funny, Episodes and Nurse Jackie are pretty solid, Whitney and Parks and Rec are probably the best of the current network offerings and I really wish Bored to Death could have stuck around a little longer.

Guilty Pleasure of All Guilty Pleasures? I have been absolutely glued to every episode of the last several seasons of The Celebrity Apprentice (and I'm still pissed that Annie Duke got screwed over in favor of Joan Rivers...wtf was that all about).

Edit: Oh, and this isn't really current but I recently picked up Zen and it's really good. I'm very surprised Rufus Sewell hasn't shown up on US tv anywhere yet

Oh, and I'm going to dust off my Double Indemnity prediction.

I'm not lobbying for it, exactly. MoC's (region locked) release is very good and Universal could do a perfectly fine US release of their own. But they haven't and you really have to wonder why.

(One also has to wonder if Paramount's move away from direct releases of most of their catalog titles puts stuff like The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance and post-1950 Billy Wilder (Ace in the Hole, Stalag 17, Sabrina) in play)

Yes, it just went OOP. Whether they'll become rare is another story.

It's a great one... the "ending" obviously worked better in cinemas. Check out Cockfighter with Oates, and, if you can find it, The Shooting. There was supposedly a blu-ray coming, but I don't think it ever came out.

Interesting.
Actually, a friend who put me on to VEEP also loves Girls.
I think we were 4 episodes into VEEP and laughed only once in the entire episode. That's when we cut it loose.
However, this is after being huge fans of Armando Iannucci's previous political comedy Thick Of It and it's sort-of-spin-off film, In The Loop.
I used to love Julia Louis-Dreyfus in Seinfeld. In fact, that show still turns up on TV and is still funnier than most new comedies.

  • Lonesome
  • Stagecoach

Lonesome is a terrific release, and I highly recommend it as a prioritized pickup if you have any interest in silent and/or pre-code cinema. In terms of a package it is a defining example of the Criterion 'treatment'.

It is out of print, but retailers still have stock. It's a good thing you picked it up.

Admittedly this is beginning to sound a little more plausible, and every one of Wilder's other biggest films has come out (domestically) already besides The Lost Weekend...but I still think Universal will do a digibook or something because I don't know what Criterion could dig up or produce in terms of new extras. Perhaps they could license the Wilder doc that appears on MoC's release of The Lost Weekend?

I'd welcome a Criterion edition of Double Indemnity, though, if even it improved on just the picture quality.

Yeah! What's with Weekend?
A pretty nuts film, but a great example of when the essays in the booklet provide guidance. I don't think I was really having trouble with the film, but the essays pretty much confirm what you thought it was about.
There's great stuff about Goddard being a total pr#ck to Mireille Darc, plus an interview with Goddard from the late 60s.
Such a scathing film full of unpleasant people.
Don't worry. The Battle of Algiers will set you right again

Just notice that the 1958 French movie Les Miserables will be release on February 19 (just saw it on Amazon.ca) It's a great movie with Jean Gabin in the role of Jean Valjean. If you have a few extra bucks it's well worth it
I'm proud to admit I have a total heterosexual man-crush on Jean Gabin. I've never seen this version of Les Miserables, but it's definitely on my radar.

Have you actually tried Cash Converters? I've never tried to sell any DVDs there, so I'm not sure. Honestly, 50 cents per DVD might okay if you've got a good amount to get rid of.
You could always try eBay. Sell them in bundles, perhaps.
I usually end up giving DVDs away to friends and family - they seem to have more value that way.
Let us know how you go...

I like horror the most and I know Criterion releases lesser known films so I don't really know where to begin. It's nice to have real people recommend something than go in blind.

Thanks!
Actually, we usually talk about David Lynch and Lena Dunham
When you say you like horror, what kind of horror are you talking about?
Classic horror? Foreign films? Slasher and gory horror? Psychological horror?
Use the suggestions others have given and see if you can find a Criterion "Three Reasons" clip or a trailer on YouTube to help you decide.
I'm not a big horror person myself, but I do love Henri-Georges Clouzot's Diabolique.
