Flash Gordon was one of the first Blu-rays that I purchased. I've had a fondness for that movie since seeing it at the theater in 1980 when I was in third grade.

This movie doesn't click for everyone, but I love it. Max von Sydow is superbly wicked as Emperor Ming.

You don't need to be a member for the B&N sale, whenever that is to occur. Membership gets you another 10% discount or free shipping if you order online. The flash sale that is being mentioned is directly from Criterion.com and happened on Valentines Day, I guess for a couple years now.. (I only knew of last years)

I still have to watch my first film by him

What would you guys recommend first?
  • Fanny And Alexander
  • Magician
  • Seventh Seal
  • Smiles Of A Summer Night
  • Summer Interlude
  • Summer With Monika
I haven't seen Smiles of a Summer Night nor Summer Interlude. I would personally start with The Seventh Seal as that was Bergman's breakout film and perhaps his most iconic. It might be somewhat depressing so follow that up with Wild Strawberries (currently only on DVD) which approaches death in a different way. Fanny and Alexander is considered Bergman's magnum opus and a summation of his career. I would save it until you've gotten a feel for his other films.

I believe the rights to Persona, The Passion of Anna, The Hour of the Wolf, Shame, and the Serpent's Egg are with United Artists/MGM/Fox. Criterion has licensed from them in the past so it's a definite possibility. Surprised it hasn't happened yet.

Probably still waiting to release it with Cuaron's Gravity or perhaps he's been too busy on that film.

Nice to know

Out of interest, do they ever include pre-orders in the flash sale pricing?

No but if you order early they might include them by mistake.

I heard only if the film is coming out within a week, but I can't confirm it from experience.

Thanks for the info. Does most everyone feel the membership with B&N is a good deal?

Yes. I finally bought a $25 Barnes & Noble membership this past December, and it's paid for itself several times over. Especially since there are several different Barnes & Noble locations here in my city.

When Barnes & Noble had the 40% Off All Blu-rays deal in December, I cleaned up their stores pretty well, since my membership allowed me to get everything for 50% off.

It depends what you're looking for.

B&N has a tendency of having obnoxiously high prices, but when they have sales, specifically the Criterion 50% off sales, then it's worth it.

It's times like those in which the membership pays for itself.

If you don't have a store nearby, probably not. The only membership benefits in that case are free shipping and the occasional member coupon that can be used online.

If you do have a store nearby, it can be worth looking into. You can wait until a good sale comes along and sign up for a two month free trial.

yeah, I don't live near a store If Amazon keeps matching some of the 50% off titles with Criterion I'll just order through them. Thanks

My closest store is one-hour away, so most of my spending has been online.

Sucks

I live just a mile down the street from the closest Barnes & Noble store. The clerks know me by name, and they always know that I'm there to look for Criterions.

That was the case when I was always at F.Y.E.

I used to live there back in the day - I was in there almost every single day to the point where they knew me and my phone number and almost everything about me. Haha it was crazy.

On my first visit to Barnes 'N Noble for Criterions last August, I purchased about 20-30 of them and the girl was really nice and was surprised about how many I was actually buying. When I went back in November during the next sale, she remembered me because I was probably the only person crazy enough to buy all of those Criterions

YMMV with coupons. I've never rec'd email coupons despite signing up for them and talking to customer service a couple of times about it (though they tend to get leaked online anyway). Instead I get a few coupons in the mail every 3 or 4 months.

Even though I saved a lot this year, now that I've acquired a lot of my wishlist I probably won't renew.
Why $250? There are regular $8 off $40 item coupons ($40 srp, not necessarily the sale price) and $5 off purchases of $50 or more coupons. These can be printed online without their emails.

Pretty much. They will usually have the next week's in stock and eligible, aside from that there might be an error that initially includes them as well (which happened once).

Been busy reading and texting for the whole Bell campaign to donate 5 cents per ever text, long distance call, tweet with #BellLetsTalk to Mental Health programs. Sorry if it's a bit political, but it's a good cause!

Got my copy of Narayama today. Has anyone been discussing this other than the skipping issue?

I loved the film, the story is an intriguing look at the lengths humans will go to to ensure their survival. The set designs are a thing of beauty, creating a world that is beautiful in a surreal way. I cried at the end.

Hope you enjoy. I just received The Kid with a Bike today in the mail.

I'm going to watch it once I fix up some ebook covers and metadata to dump on the Kobo. It actually came last Friday, but I didn't go see my parents due to the massive double whammy of a snowstorn Halifax got hit with. However, me Mam was in today, and she dropped off it, Peter Pan, and chocolate for Valentine's day. Also got fed tons of pancakes, sausage, bacon, biscuits, and blueberry sauce at work, so today really is Fat Tuesday.

Anyone know where I might find a print copy of the story Narayama is based on? Random question, I know, but I like reading the source material for a lot of the films I watch if they are based on literary sources. this is a folktale, so there must be a print copy somewhere. I just read The Remains of the Day yesterday. Yes, the whole thing. The running joke amongst friends is that 600 pages is only "light reading" for me, as I tend to devour books.
