Kino is supposed to be releasing Dersu Uzala . Was hoping for last year, but didn't happen. I think they just announced the first batch of non-horror stuff today (Of Human Bondage, etc) so was beginning to wonder.

I had the opposite initial reaction of most people.

I bought the Criterion DVDs of Wings of Desire and Paris, Texas at the same time shortly after they were released, because I got a great sale price. I had been wanting to see Wings of Desire for a long time (being the big U2 dork that I am, and knowing that their video was associated with Wim Wenders). I loved it. When I watched Paris, Texas the following night, I liked it a lot, but thought that it paled in comparison to Wings of Desire.

Upon subsequent viewings, however, my preferences changed. Paris, Texas is now my favorite of the two by a good ways.

These are both essential Criterions, though.
Another U2 fan, eh?

Oh yeah. Ever since the mid-1980s, when I was 13 years old and mowing lawns in my neighborhood to get money so that I could buy The Unforgettable Fire on cassette tape. That's still my favorite U2 album after all these years.

I love that movie, although it's not the most cheerful story in the world. I used to own the DVD, but the DVD was destroyed in 2009 when my old apartment flooded.

Incidentally, Alexandra Maria Lara gets my vote for one of the top five most beautiful present-day actresses. She was also in Anton Corbijn's film, Control, which I long to see on Region A Blu-ray some day, because I'm such a big Joy Division fan.

Tonight is the night for me to watch my Blu-ray of Terrence Malick's The New World at long last (It was one of the first Blu-rays that I purchased.).

I have not seen this movie in a few years, so here's looking forward to revisiting its unique charms.

Ah, I was thinking of throwing in Thin Red Line.

Great news. Dersu Uzala is one of Kurosawa's underrated films. I am really glad that Kino has the rights. Great film, I highly recommend it, especially if you are a Kurosawa fan.

Thanks for the news.

I got the region-free Blu-ray of Downfall. It's pretty nice although I now see there's an extended cut of the film available.(DVD only so far)

It's a shame that Malick's preferred cut isn't the cut on the Blu.

I'm right there with you Starman.

My wife and I are thinking of a European trip that would include Berlin. I've always wondered how difficult it is to get a tour of Hansa Studios...

The first collaboration with Brian Eno rendered the best albums in my opinion-The Unforgettable Fire and Joshua Tree.

Great Owl, did you mention Brian Eno not to long ago when talking about David Bowie's new album. You are as much a music aficionado as a film aficionado. We share same taste of music.

Brian Eno is an unsung hero, as a producer and musician. His Ambient Music series is great. His collaboration with Harold Budd and Robert Fripp changed the face of music for the years to come.

Brian Eno really is an unsung hero.

A Hansa Studios tour would be amazing. I would love to visit Berlin one day. Vienna too.

I saw The New World last night, and I can't believe how this affected me. Transcendence! Even now, I'm still very emotional about this film. It is so overwhelmingly beautiful, with its magnificent collage of stunning imagery, deeply personal voiceovers, and music (particularly Malick's use of Richard Wagner). I posted the following last evening in a different thread:

I just finished watching the extended cut of Terrence Malick's The New World. What a deeply moving work of art! I have to tell you all, I was deeply, deeply moved. The New World is an achingly beautiful, profound, and meditative paean to love, Nature, and the journey we all must take.

I remember a while back Criterion signed a deal with IFC to distribute films, is this deal still in effect? The only IFC film I can think of on Criterion is Tiny Furniture.

Aren't a lot of the more recent films from IFC? Like Certified Copy, Still Walking, A Christmas Tale, Hunger, Secret of the Grain, Everlasting Moments and others..

Almost all those titles other than Certified Copy are older releases than Tiny Furniture.

Gray's Anatomy, Piņa and Following were newer IFC titles.

Huh, I guess IFCs label is more international than I expected. What IFC has rights to is a pretty good clue what Criterion could release.
