It was a really good movie. I would be receptive to more IFC films in the Collection. It's nice to get a newer film every once in a while.

Yup, really good.

I like getting newer films too...but mainly because I've liked most of the ones we've gotten. I'd be saying the opposite if I disliked a lot of them so far.

I agree.

Side note, I haven't been in much of a Criterion mood lately. I think I burnt myself out with all of them. I did watch The Blob and Ministry Of Fear on Tuesday and Island Of Lost Souls today, but I've just been trying to catch up on regular films that I haven't seen yet.

All of it is in the process of thinning down my collection with films I didn't like (minus Criterion films).

I posted the following last evening in a different thread:

I just finished watching the extended cut of Terrence Malick's The New World. What a deeply moving work of art! I have to tell you all, I was deeply, deeply moved. The New World is an achingly beautiful, profound, and meditative paean to love, Nature, and the journey we all must take.
I've only seen the Theatrical Cut of the film. I did like it (even if it's probably my least favourite Malick, though I haven't seen To the Wonder) but I thought the Theatrical Cut was stretching it a bit, time-wise. It annoys me only the Extended Version is out on BD, worried it would kind of ruin it for me. Anyone seen Theatrical and the Extended and have a preference?

Thanks for the review. I can't wait to reassess this film. I feel I was much too young to appreciate it when I first saw it.

Ooh, I haven't seen Loneliest Planet yet (no theater around me played it last year), but it sounds like something up my alley.

From what I've read about the cinematography, it's a shame there's no blu ray release.

I saw the theatrical version of The New World and I've also got the region 4 DVD of this version.
I've also got the blu-ray version of the so-called "Extended Cut", which might not be Malick's cut.
It's hard to pick a preference, but I probably lean towards the longer version, simply because it has more of Colin Farrell and Q'orianka Kilcher being gorgeous together.
The longer cut introduces unnecessary "chapter" titles and some of the earlier plot is more clear.
I think the shorter cut is more dreamier and abstract.
I'd actually like to have both versions on blu-ray, but I don't hold much hope of that ever happening, which is why I'm keeping my old DVD.

I absolutely loved both, but for different reasons. Paris, Texas was more compelling story-wise, and the cinematography for both is incredible, with Wings' being enough for me to forgive the film for its over-length. It could've been shorter, but every single shot is incredible.

I'm also fascinated by the context of Wings, seeing as how it was filmed just before the Berlin Wall fell, and it's fascinating to me seeing just what an effect it had on the lives of people in the city.

[Show spoiler]Also, I love that moment at the Nick Cave concert where we hear Nick Cave thinking "Just one more song, and it's not going to be 'About a Girl'," then getting the crowd pumped up for "About a Girl". A funny moment that also gives the film additional pathos, because the idea of "performance" is such a big theme in the film, with the Trapeze artist and Peter Falk's roles especially.

I know I can't change anyone's mind, but I just wanted to share how I felt about the film. when I first watched it, I was skeptical about its praise, but the film eventually cast its "Wenders Spell" over me.

If anyone owns Tiny Furniture, can you tell me what the booklet says about which camera was used in production? I do not trust my Googling.

I prefer the extended. Malick's original theatrical cut - the 150 minute version that was shown to critics and released for a week in theaters is only available overseas, I think. Then the re-cut it down to the shorter US theatrical version.

I don't own it - never will - but it was shot on the Canon 7D, I believe.

My 5th favorite film of last year, and the only one in my top 5 that didn't get any blu-ray release. I'd be ecstatic if Criterion announced it.

Getting ready to watch Gomorrah.

I love crime films so I'm sure that I won't be disappointed
