I almost met him at a retrospective but he was sick and cancelled his venue at a showing of Heureux anniversaire and Le soupirant.

I have to say that indeed, it was quite funny and strongly reminded me of Buster Keaton, but my only complaint would be that I find Etaix's characters, in both movies, and self-centered and egoistical, which prevented me to really feel for what was happenning to him.

But that's only me, and is in the end only a minor complaint.

I know these posts just keep building and building someday's. But Yeah I too enjoyed Le Bete(after that first scene was over anyway). It's a well made film, it's just a little strange but nothing wrong with that.

After watching the three films that make up the Olivier's Shakespeare dvd box set on TCM today, makes me wish the other two would be joining Richard III on Blu-ray.

It's silly, so over the top and impossible but so funny. I can't say I laugh out loud watching it but I always enjoyed each episodes

This as been happening for a few years now to me. With every release mostly just in 3D in theaters I just don't go in theaters at all. I saw only two movies in theaters last year

I have to admit that I've never seen the remake movie. I'm sort of a purist that way.

I'd *love* to see the Stooges get the Criterion treatment on bluray ... with a mega-dose of special features! (Just trying to make a Criterion related connection to this post somehow).

Woobwoobwoobwoobwoob (Where's the eye-poke emoticon when you need one).
My friend is a huge Stooges fans and he did not really enjoy this reboot, so you might be the same as well. I can't say why I laugh so much, I mean it is silly what else would you expect from a Stooges movie but I just found it really funny. Some scenes like when they try fixing a bell on top of a building had me laughing so much my wife look at me with a weird look

A lot of Etaix movies where shorts at a time when everyone expected main features. He also started making movies in the 60's and I suspect the rise at the same time of Louis De Funes may also have hide him to international movie crowds. His movies are very fun to watch but it's been years since I seen one showing even here in a very Francophone place.

Ok, so today I'm gonna be blind buying either Thin Red Line or Badlands. Which would you guys recommend out of the two for a blind buy? The trailer for Badlands really intrigues me and has really good reviews on metacritic while the only thing that intrigues me about Thin Red Line is the amazing group of actors in the movie. It also doesn't have as good of reviews as Badlands so I'm kind of stuck on what to get.

The only Malick films I like, and I love both of them. If I had to choose just one, I'd go with Badlands because Martin Sheen and Sissy Spacek are perfect and I love those Bonnie and Clyde-esque stories.

But if it were up to me (and I had the cash), I'd pick both of them up in a heartbeat.

Yeah, I mean, I'm definately going to pick up both no matter what but I only have enough to get one, for now, with this best buy gift card I just got. I was going to wait til U&S to get both but I seriously just can't wait, I'll probably just do a return/rebuy anyway, if I can.

Thanks for the input! I'm leaning towards Badlands but I'll just wait and see if I can get a couple more opinions before I decide.

You people always stay up late talking after I go to sleep every night.

Anyway, I recommend Badlands out of the two, but only by a slim margin, because they are both essential films.

The Thin Red Line was not treated fairly when it opened in theaters, because people were comparing it to Spielberg's Saving Private Ryan. I was the only one out of my circle of friends who enjoyed the movie at the time. This may be the reason for the disparity in reviews, although many of the better critics loved the film.

Haha and you call yourself "The Great Owl"?

Thanks for your input, I haven't even seen Saving Private Ryan (I know crazy), so I'm thinking I should definately watch TRL before I watch SPR.

Apocalypse Now, Saving Private Ryan, The Thin Red Line, Letters from Iwo Jima, and City of Life and Death -- my five favorite war films of all-time. I believe you've already seen Apocalypse Now, so I highly recommend the others.

I gotta go with Badlands. Thin Red Line is good, but has some issues (IMO).

Badlands, having rewatched it the other night, is a perfect little nugget of a movie.

Out of those two titles, I would go with Badlands for no other reason than this: it is awesome to see Malick's filmography in chronological order.

The reason may be invalid because you have presumably already seen The Tree of Life. (since you own it)

I know, I know, I'm a little behind on my war movies, I'm only 20 years old so cut me some slack. I've just been getting into movies recently so I'll catch up eventually. And yes, I have already seen Apocalypse Now, its the first war movie I've ever watched and I really what got me into watching war movies. Out of all three war films I've watched, I would rank them in this order. Apocalypse Now first, Platoon second, and Full Metal Jacket 3rd.

My favorite war movie is Melville's Army of Shadows, but I'll readily admit that it's an uncanny choice for a favorite war movie.

Spielberg's Saving Private Ryan is both a wondrous and horrific film that really brings the chaos of D-Day to the screen in a way that present-day viewers never imagined possible. The first 20 minutes of Saving Private Ryan are mind-blowing and unforgettable. It's a strong movie in the Spielberg canon that illustrates his talents for defining characters by their actions as much as by their dialogue.

I like The Thin Red Line better, simply because of its massive cinematic scope, but Saving Private Ryan is a fine film for the ages.

I recently watched my Blu-ray of Apocalypse Now and was hugely impressed by the presentation of this favorite movie in high definition. It's a war movie of a different sort, because it seems to capture the attitudes and general demeanor of Vietnam moreso than being an accurate historical tale. The movie uses Joseph Conrad's Heart of Darkness framework to carry us along a river journey, Huckleberry Finn-style, to different nightmares every step of the way. Friends of mine who fought in Vietnam have told me that, of all the war movies, the characters in Apocalypse Now remind them of people that they knew while they were over there.

Oh, I was under the impression that the ITV editions of Hamlet and Henry V were of questionable quality.
Both are on 25GB discs, which is particularly bad for the two and a half hour Hamlet.
I'd definitely like to see Criterion upgrade these.

That is a really good point! I do own The Tree of Life but have yet to see it, it's been in my collection for the longest time now but just haven't been in the mood for it yet. I heard its pretty depressing so I'll probably just watch it once I've watched Malick's earlier films.
