And to connect the dots back to Criterion, one of the many reasons I would love for them to release In a Lonely Place is because it's such a fascinating (to me, anyway) title to compare/contrast with The Maltese Falcon.

The two films are so similar in so many ways and yet as good as In a Lonely Place is (and it's very, very good) and as favorably as the respective individual elements match up the finished products really are worlds apart. To me it's a very interesting case study in just how subtle the differences between 'really, really good' and 'genuinely great' can sometimes be.
I've never seen In a Lonely Place, but that's another one that I've heard about over the years.

It's also the title of a song by Joy Division/New Order, and I'm quite fond of that song.

I'll be a happy camper if High Sierra shows up on Blu-ray.

The Big Sleep as well.

I used to have a DVD 4-disc set of The Maltese Falcon, The Big Sleep, The Postman Always Rings Twice, and Dial M For Murder. That got a lot of mileage.

Yeah. I noticed yesterday that Vivre Sa Vie is $23 on Amazon. I can think of a lot worse ways to spend $23 than to upgrade that fine movie. I'm biding my time for now, and I'll be laying low in April...unless I stumble upon stuff on the used store racks or if Barnes & Noble emails me a particularly tempting coupon.

Ah you are getting your list ready for July as well?

I got 5 titles so far as essential pick ups that week
1. Fanny & Alexander 2.) Wild Strawberries 3.) Life & Death of a Colonial Blimp 4.) Ministry of Fear 5.) The Magician

You should. I don't get the channel it's on, (Teletoon up here, not FX Canada believe it or not), so I had to obtain season 4 by other means, as it's apparently not even on Teletoon yet, and probably won't be until the fall. Seasons 1-3 are on Netflix, although I use unblock us, and get the American one. Have no idea how many seasons are on the Canadian one. I know that for some shows, such as Mad Men, Canada is a few seasons behind. But then, Canadian netflix has a bunch of films the US one doesn't have.

H. John Benjamin is perfect as Archer, and a lot of the jokes and pop culture references are actually quite clever.

Don't laugh, but Scooby Doo Mystery Incorporated is also pretty good. Their parodies and tributes range from essentially remaking Kubrick's The Shining, a homage to Z-Man from Beyond the Valley of the Dolls, HP Lovecraft, and taking the piss out of Andy Warhol and Nico and the Velvet Underground. Too bad Cartoon Network is giving it the shaft and it's only getting 2 very prolonged seasons. Also, Patrick Warburton is in it, and Udo Kier as a psychotic parrot.

Yes! I love Archer so much!
I've just been re-watching season 3 on blu-ray in preparation for season 4.
Jon Benjamin is one of my favourite voice-actors. I have no trouble switching between Archer and Bob's Burgers, because he's so great as both characters.
I was first introduced to him as the son in Dr. Katz, Professional Therapist in the 90s.

Nice!

Off the top of my head for July, depending on finances, availability, general disposition, etc.... America Lost and Found: The BBS Story, Vivre Sa Vie, The Rules of the Game, The 400 Blows, Diabolique, Identification of a Woman, Yojimbo/Sanjuro.

The Big Sleep is definitely the highest placed Bogie title on my wishlist. I wouldn't mind Warner going the UCE route either.

In a Lonely Place and To Have and Have Not tend to take turns in second and third depending on my mood. I'm not a huge fan of either High Sierra or Key Largo but I could see either growing on me (and I would be unable to resist buying decent releases of either). I wouldn't mind a US release of Sabrina at some point either. In fact, I'd really like that.

I must say that all four of my Humphrey Bogart Blu-rays (The Maltese Falcon, Casablanca, The Treasure of the Sierra Madre, The African Queen) are of superb quality, and it's a blessing to have these movies in such unbeatable shape. They will definitely take some multiple viewing abuse on my player over the years to come.

I want Key Largo on Blu-ray.

Not really Criterion-related, but it ought to be.
That blu-ray of The Maltese Falcon is pretty sweet.
But it can't compare to the restoration and transfer of Casablanca which looks completely stunning.
We watched it on the weekend because Mrs Drbikeshorts had never seen it ().
The Petrified Forest has been announced for May. Awesome film.

I enjoy him as The Master in Venture Bros., and I remember him as Coach McGuirk on Home Movies.

Funny you should mention Bob's Burgers. I haven't watched the show, but the first episode of season 4 of Archer has a nice reference to the show in it. That's all I'm saying.

I think you two have talked me into Archer. I'm going to put the first couple seasons on my gohasting watch list. That can be a pretty cheap way to check out a new show and if I find it OnDemand in the meantime I can always go that way.

I'm in. I like the idea of gradually buying the Bogart flicks as they are released.

I agree about the picture quality of Casablanca. Looks as though it were filmed on a sound stage in my apartment. I've got the el cheapo single-disc edition, but it's still a win.

Something just hit me like a lead brick...

I ventured into the Movies forum where they were counting down their Top Movies of 2013 so far, and I realized that I have not seen a single 2013 film.

I guess that I should get cracking on that. I used to have a routine of going to the six-dollar pre-noon matinees down the street after my Saturday morning training runs, but that fell by the wayside after I bought my Blu-ray player.

I'll be going to see To the Wonder and Oblivion in late April, so my dilemma will be remedied. I thought about going to see Spring Breakers and I still might, but I'm also intrigued by the no-CGI effects Evil Dead remake.

My Best Buy had only 5 copies of Badlands on Blu opening week. When I checked last week there was 1 left. Now I went today and there's about 9-10 of them!

No Netflix? That's how I saw seasons 1 and 2. season 3 was added a month ago.

Bob's burgers is on there too, so once I watch Ripper Street, I'll check it out. Uncapped internet and unblock us is fun. I'm only paying 14 bucks a month for TV. Internet is about 70, but I can't get it any cheaper, and it is uncapped.

Where do you live?

I live in CT and I am lucky to find any Criterion titles when I go into Best Buy
