Fixed.

We need a BluRay release now. Make it happen somebody.

That is quite a statement. After seeing it only one time (a few years ago) I considered it to be my least favorite of Malick's films (The Thin Red Line being my favorite of his). I have only seen The Tree of Life once and I thought it to be superior than The New World. I'll need to give The New World a second spin to see if I have the same epiphany.

The IMAGES are very interesting, you are fundamentally off on that part. Not just because they look very nice, but because they align with what the film is about. Look at the opening shot of either the DC (submerged shot of boat race) it the TC (nightclub dancers) for proof

The way he plays with negative space, again, places it more align the works if Antonioni... not whatever gangster, noir, thriller auteur. This is an art film through and through.

Again, watch it all the way through, do so during the daytime.
Your analysis is pretty deep, especially because I don't think the film requires much interpretation. However, I feel like the whole argument about "if they continue down a path of self destruction, they'll lose what matters to them the most" is a common thing in most films, especially action films coupled with dramatic elements.

The entire film feels like a summer blockbuster that was overhyped and failed. It was a reboot of a somewhat successful TV show and it just didn't succeed the way that most audiences assumed it would.

If I ever decide to watch it again, I'll have to rent it as I got rid of the Blu-ray a few weeks ago.

Actually...

I'm sort of hoping that the release of Passion inspires a Blu-ray of Love Crime to be released on these shores. Love Crime is a win across the board.

3:10 to Yuma is going into the Blu-ray player later this evening.

After watching Safety Last! and Marketa Lazarová yesterday and today, I don't think that my Samsung Blu-ray player can handle this much sheer awesomeness in one single weekend, but I'm going to go for it anyway.

(Actually, I started the weekend by finishing the Blu-ray of A Safe Place, so there was a notable deficit of awesomeness at the start, but things quickly got better after that.)

You were looking in the wrong place if you wanted a "summer blockbuster" or an action thriller.

The film DOES warrant analysis. Yes, it works firmly within a genre, but the aural and visual DECISIONS Michael Mann made to craft it take it to a new level. Every shot, every edit is so considered. It's one of the most thought provoking and formally dense films of the last decade.

(Thinking of watching it again tonight)

Afterwards, there's more details below if you select any movie (e.g., Blu-ray version) where you'll find "Buy 2 Get a 3rd Free: DVD, Blu-ray, CD" next to the word "details" on the weblink.
I'm aware that the buy 2 get a 3rd free promo is both in store and online. He asked about the Criterions that were on sale for $29.xx. Those sale prices were online only.

I went into Everlasting Moments with relatively muted expectations. I expected it to be good but given the subject matter I didn't in a million years expect it to be so...uplifting isn't the right word...maybe inspiring is better.

It was hardly a feel good movie but I still felt felt pretty damn good after watching it.

Overyhyped? Yeah, a little bit maybe. Failed? Definitely not.

Even on the summer blockbuster scale alone it pretty much worked. It was a fun movie, it was nice to look at, the performers all put in a fair day's work...if you want to judge it just as a summer blockbuster then I'd say it delivered.

That's underselling it big time, but I will take it

Popped in Jubal. Hope it's as good as the previous western I saw today, Hannie Caulder.

I haven't seen his other films, but that's just my take on them. I've attempted Miami Vice four times and three of those times I ended up falling asleep, and the other I ended up shutting off halfway through. I couldn't take it.
I haven't seen Miami Vice. I also really like Collateral though. I hate Tom cruise half the time and I am not bothered by him the other half. I thought he was magnificent in Collateral Damage though.

I think Collateral Damage is like 2/3 of an amazing movie and it falls apart towards the end in my opinion. It's certainly not BAD, but it goes from feeling like something great that's not related to Hollywood to COMPLETELY and UTTERLY Hollywood.

I'll be getting Shoah. Rewatchability may be a factor for some (although how many times do people really watch thier 200+ CC movies, really?) but in terms of a document of the 20th Century, Shoah is practically unique and very, very important.

Or to put it another way, I don't feel I need Schindler's List, but I do need Shoah.

I'm more concerned that plain old watchability might be a factor. It sounds really intriguing but I know what my thought process is like when I'm selecting a film and this just screams night after night after month after month of 'yeah, I really want to watch/finish that but ehhhhhhhhhh not tonight'.

You mean Collateral?

Yeah, I used to be a Tom Cruise fan, but I've noticed a lot of his performances are just bland and forgettable at best. My favorites are definitely Collateral, Eyes Wide Shut, and Jerry Maguire.

It's odd, because I feel like I'm the only one that liked Greenberg - and I really liked it. But this came off as a poorly written episode of Girls by a film student who wanted to take a go at French New Wave. Insufferable characters that just weren't interesting. One of the weaker theatrical releases from what I've seen this year.

I can definitely see where you're coming from.

The thing that I kept thinking throughout the entire film was that it felt very amateurish. I felt as if everything was scripted and very "by the books". Regardless of that, I feel as if it worked because of the style that he chose to utilize.

Alfred Hitchcock's The Birds uses bird sounds in lieu of a music score, and these birds sounds were incredibly loud on the venue sound system. During the film's climax, when birds have surrounded the house, one could almost believe that the birds had surrounded Fox Theatre as well.

This experience was a hundred different kinds of awesome.

Not entirely Criterion-related, except by a degree of separation from one of the Criterion Collection prominent directors, but still worth a mention.
We're getting four screenings of To Catch A Thief in early July. Works out perfectly, as I am finally going to tackle Hitchcock's Hollywood era stuff starting very soon.
