Thanks for thinking I'm not crazy regarding the sci fi thing. I just think a Michael Mann sci fi movie would be amazing because I think he'd rely less on special effects and more on atmosphere and characters. I'm so sick of all these brainless, big, dumb sci fi movies like Oblivion or After Earth or World War Z or Star Trek Into Darkness or soon to come Elysium. I do think that Ender's Game may be one exception and could be a good movie actually.
I find Mann interesting above all else as a visual craftsman. I think in the images alone of those 5, and several others, he attempts to convey new feelings on old matters (genre, history). I just didn't see much of that interest the first and only time I saw Mohicans. Before I speak too soon, let me revisit it one of these days. You could very well be right.

I posted this in another thread, but this Mann quote really sticks out:

Excellent film, and one I'd love to see Criterion release someday.
Stroszek is such a great movie. I need to shake the dust off my Herzog movies.

Incidentally, Ian Curtis of the band, Joy Division, committed suicide shortly after watching Stroszek. It's not exactly an uplifting movie, and I can see someone who is already in a resigned frame of mind might respond to it as such.

I'm in the middle of Johnny Guitar for the first time and this is better than I anticipated. Definitely reminds me of Rio Bravo at times.

Stroszek is easily one of Herzogs best. I prefer it over any of the films he make with Klaus Kinski

My preferences are tilted toward Herzog's 1979 version of Nosferatu that stars Klaus Kinski and Isabelle Adjani.

Aguirre, the Wrath of God and Fitzcarraldo are outstanding films as well. Criterion needs to re-release Burden of Dreams as a double-set with Fitzcarraldo.

The only Herzog Blu-ray that I own at present is Rescue Dawn, but I've got a few Herzog DVDs lying around.

Gold Rush showed up today (along with Shoah). I'm hoping to find time for both over this long weekend, but I don't know if I'll be able to squeeze Shoah in. I remember someone asked recently, but I can't recall the answer. Which version of Gold Rush is best to watch first? Eventually, I'll watch both versions, just curious which to go with for my first viewing.

I think they were referred to the re-release; the music is what won the oscar, and it's arguably closer to what Chaplin envisioned. It's also interresting to hear the narration.

However, I will offer a dissenting opinion. I find the original to possess a certain charm, which is somewhat subdued by the elimination of the more "quaint" or "melodramatic" moments in the '42 edit.

From the New York Times:
Quote:
Although the 1942 print comes first on the disc and offers the better visual quality, it’s more rewarding to begin with “The Gold Rush” as Chaplin originally released it. Inspired by a stereoscopic image of miners lined up to cross the Chilkoot Pass, Chaplin conceived “The Gold Rush” as his first epic-scale production, and transported a crew of over 600 technicians and extras to Truckee, Calif., to begin filming the Yukon sequences.

I got Army of Shadows (L'armée des ombres) today from Amazon. My only regret is that I didn't purchase it sooner since the today's market price at the time of purchase few days ago matches "suggested retail price" (SRP).

Right now, there's only few left in stock.

Looks like 3 Films By Roberto Rossellini set is a BD / DVD combo according to Amazon.

http://www.amazon.com/Roberto-Rossel...469081&sr=1-75

I don't think it's true, though.

40 bucks is still cheaper than a lot of eBay prices.

From Friday, July 12 to Thursday, July 22, the New York Film Forum will be doing a big screen showing of the restored version of L'Avventura.

From the front page: https://www.blu-ray.com/news/?id=11542

I may go to this!

I just realized that there are two art house theaters within 5 minutes of this theater (according to Google Maps). That would make a fun day! Imagine going to three films!

I absolutely agree. It's the lesser of two evils by purchasing Army of Shadows (L'armée des ombres) at Amazon.com over bidding it at Ebay. After all, on the latter, the "premium" market value goes higher since it's arguably one of the top Criterion Collection movie title.

The longer you wait, the more its going to go up on the after market. Just look at playtime, it's just rising like a volcano.

I need to hit up my few local art house theaters. One does an essential art house series every month where they show an art house classic for just $2 a ticket (this month it was The Seventh Seal.)

I can tell you right now that Antonioni probably won't be your thing...
