Just watched The Gold Rush. I ended up going with the 1942 rerelease, as Criterion outlined that Chaplin considered this the "definitive" cut. Other than Chaplin's narration, which at times felt like something out of a show gauged at pre-schoolers whose unformed brains need everything explained, it was once again near perfect Chaplin. My second favorite of his after Modern Times. Now I'll be off to make my way through a few of these supplements.

Sunday was C day up in here. Watched Following, Two-Lane Blacktop, The War Room, and Le Cercle Rouge stopping only for bio breaks. War Room was interesting, but not as much as I expected... Cercle was good but...hate to say it...a bit too slow. The other two, no complaints!

Speaking of Chaplin, I just found out that a local art house theater will be showing City Lights next month (my favorite of Chaplin's films). ![]() |

![]() [Show spoiler] Nice one! and I agree, if you've got the money, more power to you! People pay that much for certain concert tickets. If Criterion's The Third Man is something you wanted bad enough, that ought to be worth it. I doubt I'll ever find it for a price I can afford. I'll have to settle for my SC release lol |

I paid around 80 for my copy of The Third Man a couple years ago and I don't regret it. It's certainly one of those films that's worth whatever you pay for it, it's that good. Speaking of films worth their money, I watched Miami Vice for the first time tonight and I can happily say that it was an amazing blind buy. The critics got it wrong and abdrewes saying it was Michael Mann's "purest expression of his art" is a pretty accurate statement. Purely cinematic.

I managed to snag a Last Year at Marienbad from a Barnes & Noble recently and was hoping to buy the replacement case from Criterion...however, they appear to have already sold out of them (unless they were discontinued along with the movie itself). Does anyone have a line on one?
Thanks in advance, --Ben |

I've got a lot to talk about today:
I resumed and finished The Ballad of Narayama last night. It was great but I would have loved some supplements afterwards as I didn't understand some of the themes. I absolutely loved the music in the film. What is the name of the string instrument that is used predominantly? It added a lot to my enjoyment of the film. I subsequently popped in Sansho the Bailiff and fell asleep over half way through. This time, blame it on an 8-hour drive and 2 ounces of scotch. I should have done a comedy. Either playtime, Monsieur Verdoux, or something from the Pierre Etaix set. Those will be next. Oh, and Le Cercle Rouge is due for delivery today! Not a bad CC day if I must say so. Lastly, while out of town this weekend, I happened upon a Barnes and Noble which had Léon Morin, Priest, Last Year at Marienbad, and Army of Shadows. Would you guys have paid $80 bucks for them to try and flip them? They weren't on sale but were a part of the B2G1. I should be back up that way at the end of July. Maybe I'll be able to snag them in 50% sale. |

picnic at hanging rock
what's the deal with this DVD? worth a purchase, or will they upgrade this one soon? I just watched a nice chunk of it on hulu before my internet gave out and I might just purchase it now. Very nice film to look at even if I have no idea where it was going to end up. |

Someone who remembers the details better than I do might be able to fill in the blanks, but a few years back Picnic at Hanging Rock was part of a poll to see what titles people would like to see upgraded. If I remember correctly, every other title in the poll has been upgraded, so it stands to reason that this would be more evidence that it is (eventually) coming.
