What does everyone here think of The Last Emperor? Much like the problem many people had with Marienbad, I had a very tough time getting through all the way to the end. Am I missing something? What should I be looking our when I attempt a second viewing?

I've noticed that Criterion has yet to re-release a complete box set. I've yet to pull the trigger on Rohmer's Six Moral Tales or the Louis Malle Collection from the DVD era, and only one of the Malle films has come to Blu, and I'd love to have the complete Rohmer set eventually.

I still have my very awesome Adventures of Antoine Doinel box set from back in the day, and would love an upgrade of that. I love 400 Blows, but my favorite of the series (And possibly of Truffaut's career) is Stolen Kisses.

Does anyone think they will eventually put that one back out on Blu?

I feel the exact same way about Fincher. He is certainly hit or miss with me. I actually think he is currently at the top of his game as I believe Dragon Tattoo and Social Network to be his best directorial efforts along with The Game.

The thing about Dragon Tattoo is I don't really find the story very interesting. I wanted to see the Swedish version first, but ended up seeing it the reverse, but it all seems like set dressing for a very bland James Patterson-esque mystery romp. I will admit the performances on both sides were fantastic and direction was sharp, but the films themselves did nothing for me.

Button as has been stated felt like Forrest Gump in reverse, too sentimental and Oscar-baiting to work for me. My favorite Fincher is Zodiac. Some of my all time favorite films are stuff like All the President's Men, Network, etc and I feel like this was just an extension of what those films were doing in the 70's.

TCM just aired 5 Truffaut films, including Stolen Kisses, in HD. So perhaps!

I would have upgraded my DVD of The 400 Blows to Blu-ray a long time ago if not for anticipating a Criterion upgrade of this box set one day.

I'll probably buy The 400 Blows soon, but, with my luck, the complete box set will be announced the following month.

The other thing is that, if and when I buy The 400 Blows on Blu-ray, I pretty much have to add the cost of the replacement case to the total, because there's no way that I'm going to own that Blu-ray without the plastic case.

Start with Breathless, it's a good jumping off point considering it was his first feature-length film. I'd then move onto Vire sa Vie or A Woman is A Woman. Vivre sa vie is my favorite movie of all time, I love it so much :P Then go from there with Band of Outsiders, Contempt, Alphaville, Pierrot Le fou, etc. I've never seen une femme mariee before but I would like too. The last Godard film you should watch should be Weekend purely because you're used to Godard and you can really see his shift in style towards more radical filmmaking.

There was a Godard retrospective here in Baltimore recently and I rewatched all the films screened, many of them for the first time in a decade.

This time around I felt like Band of Outsiders was the most conventionally entertaining of his films, perhaps more so than Breathless. Alphaville and Weekend are a nice entry point into his more adventurous work.

I like Benjamin Button but hate Forrest Gump. That movie is trash.

I enjoy all of Fincher's films for the most part (except for Alien 3) but Panic Room is just alright. I need to give The Game and Fight Club another chance because I didn't enjoy them as much as I feel I should.

Even though I have quite a few unopened criterion BD's left to check out, I really feel compelled to watch In the Mood for Love again tomorrow. It'll be my 3rd time viewing it since my purchase. I would love to see Criterion release WKW's two early films, especially Days of Being Wild with new translated subtitles and 2046.

There's no such thing as too many viewings of In The Mood For Love.

I love The Last Emperor, but I am a sucker for beautifully filmed epics.

That is uncanny. I believe I also had the same issue with The Last Emperor. I rarely am able to shut off a movie halfway through but I think I did this with that film. Either I couldn't stay awake or I just lost patience. Why oh why?

How did Stolen Kisses look? I really want Criterion to do more Truffaut in HD. I desperately want Jules and Jim (I had to sell my Criterion DVD years ago, and wants a Blu like nothing else), Day for Night, Shoot the Piano Player, and the rest of the Doinel cycle.

What are the chances of Gus Van Sant's Elephant being released by Criterion?

I doubt they'd release Elephant without Gerry and Last Days as part of the package.

Also, I would personally prefer if they release some proper Bela Tarr stateside.

I wish TCM over here showed that sort of stuff.
I don't think ours show any foreign language films at all.

Smile The Third Man BD is in my hands!

Here is a brand new photo I just shot of The Third Man, which is now in my hands! I spent $125 on it on eBay and was lucky to receive the BD disc, the original digipack plus the original booklet and new replacement case. Everything is in perfect condition!
