Haha, if all goes well, I should own the former of those titles by tomorrow.

Makes sense. I probably should get on a better schedule, but I'm trying to catch up on some classics and recently released movies this summer and I inevitably end up staying up much later than I mean to.

Speaking of The Man who Knew too Much, it's been forever since I've seen the Jimmy Stewart version. How is the Peter Lorre substitute in that one?

It is a great album but I always felt that it has a bit too much filler (the songs Elvis Presley and America, Promenade and 4th of July are the ones I'm referring to). And Pride is overplayed. But the album is terrific. Achtung Baby is my favorite (I love 90's U2).

Criterion related: perhaps I'll watch M tonight. I've been meaning to watch it again.

It's also been a while since I've seen the remake, and I don't actually remember. He didn't leave much of an impression, whoever he was. I definitely prefer the original, excluding the Jimmy Stewart role. In any case, I think it's time for a Hitchcock marathon once my Masterpiece collection arrives.

I was going to ask why The Makioka Sisters retails at $29.99 when almost all other Criterion blu-rays retail at $39.99, but I answered my own question: almost no bonus features.

Is that one worth a blind buy during the sale? I love the novel by Tanizaki on which it's based, which can always work for or against a movie.

That's what I'm talking about!!

I've only seen about two or three of the films he made before 1930. That should be my marathon right there

I really loved it (have not read the novel though). I thought it was gorgeous, very moving and brilliantly performed. There is tremendous value in each and every $29.99 release. Buy with confidence.

Any other redeeming qualities to In the Realm of the Senses besides the fact that it's really sexually explicit?

Sorry if it wasn't insightful enough. It's been well over 1500 movies ago since I last saw it. In short, I found it as moving as any Ozu movie not named Tokyo Story and my God! It is a gorgeously shot film (see any two stills and youll know what I mean. )

Nope. I'm not a fan. Every other Oshima film I've seen is much better. Well, alright, the cinematography is pretty great. Very claustrophobic. and I suppose the pacing is pretty good. Alright, alright the first 15 minutes are great and then it drastically devolves into almost pure exploitation (although this very well could have been his point. It was based off of a real life case and the events following the film (in real life) are almost more interesting than those portrayed in the film. The film makes a lot more sense if you are familiar with the case, as a Japanese viewer might have been.)

Good Lord, we're all going to be like The Lost Boys tonight, staying up after midnight to check if the sale still works the same way.

I'm about to watch Charade for the first time, so maybe I'll get cracking on a review for that film if I don't drift off to sleep.

Oh, I wasn't being sarcastic -- I appreciated the positive response. Basically looking for justifications to pull the trigger on some of my "maybe"s during the sale.

It's funny that you say this, because the reason I consider The Unforgettable Fire to be my favorite U2 album is because it features these atmospheric and ethereal tracks that stand apart from U2's usual larger-than-life anthem fare. "Promenade" and "Elvis Presley and America" are downright brilliant in my book, and I could listen to U2 play that kind of music all day.

I like a lot of The Joshua Tree outtakes and B-sides ("Walk to the Water", "Deep in the Heart", etc.) for the exact same reason.

I really love U2 when they are just doing low-key beautiful numbers with The Edge's trademark chiming guitar that do not sound like radio anthems.

What does everyone here think of The Man Who Fell to Earth? I have an opportunity to acquire it pretty cheap but it'll be a blind buy.

Get it. It's Nicolas Roeg's most well-rounded and interesting film outside of Eureka. and if you find you don't enjoy it enough to keep it you can always resell it.

Staying up past midnight warrants vampire references now?

Did I miss a memo...is forty the new seventy?
