I like a lot of The Joshua Tree outtakes and B-sides ("Walk to the Water", "Deep in the Heart", etc.) for the exact same reason.

I really love U2 when they are just doing low-key beautiful numbers with The Edge's trademark chiming guitar that do not sound like radio anthems.

Fair enough. I like a lot of the more mellow tracks too. The Three Sunrises is one that I think should have been on The Unforgettable Fire. The album is excellent though either way.

I blind-bought the DVD years ago, because I've always been a massive David Bowie fan. The movie did not blow me away upon first viewing, but I thoroughly enjoyed it when I gave it a second chance. It's a science fiction movie with an inner focus on human nature from a differing perspective.

Not really, but I'm usually in the office at 7:00 in the morning (so that I can leave before 4:00 and hit the gym early). I usually hit the sheets around 10:30 or 11:00 on most weeknights.

You're seriously agonizing over whether to spend ten bucks on a OOP Criterion?

I'd buy Traffic if I saw it for ten bucks and I can't stand it. Hell, I'd buy Tiny Furniture if I saw it for ten bucks.

In fact, it's hard to think of a Criterion title I wouldn't take a flyer on for ten bucks.

The Wes Andersons maybe and even then I'd probably say 'what the hell, I haven't seen Tenenbaums in a few years, maybe I missed something'.

Definitely wasn't agonizing, I had already set the wheels in motion to acquire it, just wanted to know what kind of film to expect.

Rich, I will gladly pay you a generous finder's fee if you choose to get rid of it

Hope you enjoy it though!

None of my local B&N's have copies of Shoah in stock, even though they all say they do. Guess i won't be getting that day one of the sale.

I'm very excited about the album they're working on now as Danger Mouse is producing it and the typical U2 crew (Brian Eno, Daniel Lanois, etc) are apparently not involved.

Oh wait, we're off topic, aren't we?
Yes, the new album might just be a radical departure and dare I say there could be U2 hip hop songs on there. If U2 made a rap/soul album, I for one would faint though.

Criterion related: perhaps I'll watch M tonight. I've been meaning to watch it again.
I tend to agree that Achtung Baby was U2 at their best. Their Rattle & Hum stuff was rather pretentious as they were trying to capture Americana and Springsteen and all sorts of stuff at the time. Achtung Baby is truly an original album though.

It was based off of a real life case and the events following the film (in real life) are almost more interesting than those portrayed in the film. The film makes a lot more sense if you are familiar with the case, as a Japanese viewer might have been.)
Merry Christmas, Mr. Lawrence is a great movie I must say. It is my favorite Oshima film by far. I think ITROTS is a very tragic film in many ways and though there is a great deal of sex in there, the true point of the film is obsession that leads to consumption that leads to self-destruction.

Let's not forget that the U2 song "Luminous Times" is a great one too. It was featured on the With or Without You single.

If U2 could get back to more experimentation and less commercialization, they would be a good band again.

And I think U2's album "Pop" was their last true experimental album. If anyone here heard "The Passengers - Original Soundtracks 1", they know just how experimental the band members of U2 can be. I love the album "Zooropa" too and that was actually the very first compact disc (CD) I ever bought in a record shop (I was 15 when I bought it in 1993).

Ah, Passengers. Good stuff. Well, Elvis Ate America is possibly their worst song IMO but other than that...

If I'm not mistaken, the 50% off sale should start in about 17 minutes? Whether the B2G1 free sale is still valid is up in the air, right?
