Some light reading while you wait, because I just finished watching...
![]() Stanley Donen's 1963 comedic suspense film, Charade, is one of the most entertaining and classy films that I've seen in the Criterion queue, and a smile never left my face while I watched the multiple twists unfold during the story. I watched Charade for the first time tonight when I was in a sleepy frame of mind, but the movie quickly captivated me into alert attention. Charade inevitably invites comparisons to the movies of Alfred Hitchcock, probably because the plight of Reggie Lambert (Audrey Hepburn) as an innocent woman who suddenly finds herself in the middle of a web of murderous deceptions shares quite a few similarities with the plight of a character played by the plight of her co-star, Cary Grant, in Hitchcock's 1959 masterpiece, North by Northwest. Charade excels on its own terms, however, and dodges direct comparison by way of a few joyously macabre quirks and some surprisingly graphic scenes of corpses strewn along the way. From an opening scene, when we see Reggie targeted by a gun that turns out to be something other than what we are expecting to a post-climactic surprise right before the end credits, Charade takes us along a roller coaster that thrills us while making us laugh. The always radiant Audrey Hepburn and the older, but nonetheless magnetic Cary Grant are at their finest here, but Charade benefits just as much from key supporting roles from James Coburn, Walter Matthau, George Kennedy, and several others. Charade looks marvelous on this Blu-ray, and a few noteworthy moments, such as a boat ride through Paris and a colorful sequence where Hepburn strolls through a park in a yellow coat, made me forget about any limitations with the source material. For a 1963 film, this one is quite splendid in high definition. Last edited by The Great Owl; 07-09-2013 at 04:03 AM. |

Shoah is the main one I want, on my budget I should be able to grab 3-4 other single disc titles. Naked Lunch, High and Low, Harakiri, Heaven's Gate, Safety Last!, Life of Oharu, Ministry of Fear and Two-Lane Blacktop are the ones I hav my eye on.
