Nice! Be careful when you slide those discs out. Scratches suck.

Great news guys! I ordered a copy from Howards End back when it was "temporarily out of stock" at Amazon and today I received an estimated delivery date of July 18-20. I just hope it sticks since it costs 25.99 and for an OOP title I think its a pretty good deal.

On other news, I just saw Lola Montes for the first time last night and WOW I was completely mesmerized. There's a poetic tragedy to the story and despite what many people said, I thought Martine Carol was exceptional as the titular character. I really liked how the movie cut between her life in the circus with segments of her previous life. I think that gave the movie a powerful contrast since it showed that her life has always been an act, juggling between love and scandal and that gives the film a sense of tragedy and makes you feel compassion for this beautiful yet tortured woman.

Oh, and the cinematography was just a thing of beauty throughout the film and Criterion's transfer just blew me away. Everyhing looked so perfect and colors were fantastic. Another one to my list of blind buys that turned out to be amazing.

The best, in my opinion, is probably Letter Never Sent.

FIVE:
•Letter Never Sent
•Moment of Truth
•The Makioka Sisters
•Identification of a Woman
•Jubal

(Note: Three outlaw Samurai is probably the safest blind-buy out of the lot)

I signed up for the trial membership by ordering it with a $10 e-gift card on the website. Both my membership # and gift card # were emailed to me within 10 minutes. And I wrote the # down to take to the store, so you don't need to wait for your card.

Good luck!

There are quite a few more great shots than that one too.

Easily one of my favorite Criterions. But you might take that with a grain of salt because Robinson Crusoe On Mars and Harold and Maude are also very high on my Criterion list.

(A special thanks to the people in this forum who helped nudge me to buy Stagecoach, with their good comments).
When I revisited Stagecoach last night, I realized that it's probably not a stretch to say that about a third of the American movies released since then have copied the blueprints from it. The 1990s Keanu Reeves movie, Speed, for example, wouldn't otherwise exist.

Wouldn't think it'd really be worth it, but I dunno, I added 5 movies to my cart and it turned into free shipping to a German address.

Removed 2 titles and was still showing Free on the 3

Decided to splurge during the B&N sale. Few new, most upgrades.

Wallet much lighter, but here's my latest haul.

Stopped by my local B&N yesterday and got:

Amarcord
39 Steps
Lady Vanishes
Monterey Pop

And today..B&N online, ordered:
Shoah
Hunger
Au Revoir Les Enfants
Vivre Sa vie
La Haine
Three Colors
Belle de jour

When those are delivered, it will officially put me over 100+ Criterion blu's!

This is weird. I signed up for the trial to see if it would do the same thing to Canada, but I am still getting the same shipping rates as I would without a membership.

Does anyone own By Brakhage: An Anthology Volumes One and Two Set?

If so, are most of the films silent? I saw one of his shorts and loved the ambient music that went along with the film and was wondering if that was more of the exception or the rule. Thanks!

his screen says "shipping was changed to international shipping" maybe the shipping rates are still the old ones?

doesnt matter for me how many movies i add.. i always get:

standart shipping (21 days) ~10$
air mail 14 days ~15$
express (~30$)

Yeah it must just be messed up. I went back and tried to proceed further into check out and it won't let me select either of those shipping options. The Free or the Express method. So it must be pulling those from my US account when added to the cart.

My bad but it looked promising.

will i get coupons with this free membership?

and will there be shipping costs if im not in the U.S. ? (i think yes)

thanks for your help
If you are outside of the U.S., there is almost no value to membership. You may receive coupons, but free express shipping is limited to orders within the continental U.S., free shipping is limited to the U.S., Puerto Rico and U.S. protectorates, and there is no additional member's discount for online orders.

How is everyone else going to watch Shoah?

Is anyone going to attempt to watch the whole 9 hour film without interruption?

Speak!
I tend to agree; I see a lot of folks purchasing it, albeit the fact that, likely, only a small fraction of us will watch it more than once. I purchased it because I love the idea of first hand accounts, as well as the juxtaposition of the on-site locations with the stories as to what happened there.

As for my gameplan for tackling the 9.5 hours, I'll probably go with either the 3-3-3 method, or just use a rainy weekend to polish it off. I've got the set in my hands, and it's a fantastic package.

And I rented it from the library, in the knowledge that I probably WOULDN'T watch it more than once. (While telling myself all the affirmations that I was doing a good thing for humanity by watching it, etc.)

Fortunately, our library has 7-day rentals, which, if I can't watch a 9-hour movie in that amount of time without "rushing" it, it must be worse than I thought.
I mean, if it's just about seeing it...

Default Criterion Collection Discussion

I should get my library to buy Shoah so I can see it. Of course, knowing them, they'll only buy the DVD, but still.
