Che
Breathless
Au Revoir Les Enfants
Vivre Sa vie
Rewatch? Videodrome and Breathless.

But for the film itself I would choose Au Revoir Les Enfants (which may not have high rewatchability for a lot of people but I can watch it over and over) as one of the picks. The movie is stunning and has one heck of an ending.

i found Au Revoir Les Enfants @ youtube and it looks good. but more like a watch once movie.

Hunger would be interessting cuz criterion seems to be the only label with a bluray release and i like fassbinders movies a lot.

Videodrome looks a little like house.. strange fun movie

vivre sa vie sounds interessting same for breathless..

so nobody would pick "che" ? ( could probably get the cheaper UK release here)

viewed Safety Last! last nite and what a great film, awesome restoration, did have a few scratches and such, but were are talking about a almost 100 year film.
I did notice one thing though, the images during climbing of the building and clock scenes have strange rounded corners on all four sides of the image while the rest of the film is perfectly square, is this because maybe a different kind of camera was used for the filming of those scenes?, I'm not that familiar with many silent films.

cant wait to "climb" into the extras on the disc, and disc is chock full of them!

I personally don't get the big fuss about Che. The first half was okay, the second half downright dull. Definitely don't think it had much depth, or a particularly compelling narrative. Not a fan of Breathless either but at least that has a bit more historical/technical interest if you're a film fan.

Hunger stars Michael FessbEnder, it is not a Rainer FassbInder film - it's directed by Steve McQueen. It's great though. That and Videodrome are some great Criterions to chose. I also quite like Repulsion, especially in hindsight (want to watch it again). If you're into psychological, 'somebody goes crazy' thrillers (a recent example being Black Swan), then you should like it.

forgot to add, I watched with the 1969 mono score, I love the sound of those old time organs!
There was a section of it that sounded like the vintage Batman theme!
Will give the 1989 stereo sound track a whirl in the future

Just ordered
The Seventh Seal (seen it a long time ago and enjoyed it)
The Red Shoes (based off of recommendation)

That's six in total (for me) Lightweight compared to the others. I didn't think I would get into them like this, but it's great revisiting old films I've seen plus learning about new ones.

Sweet. Have you considered Black Narcissus, Colonel Blimp, Wild Strawberries and Fannie & Alexander. Those are some pretty great Bergman and Archer's choices too.

I have Black Narcissus already. I love it. I just watched that last night actually. Colonel Blimp? Um....I know my friend loves that movie, but I never considered it and I haven't heard of the latter two, but I'm always open to recommendations. A great percentage of the Criterion Collection, I've seen and heard of, but there's a lot that is new to me.

Definitely look into them. Those two Bergmans were even more powerful experiences for me, Wild Strawberries especially.

The good thing is that you have a few weeks to look into or even watch some of the ones you are on the fence about.

Happy Hunting!

I just saw Wild Strawberries for the first time and enjoyed it. I liked it more than The Seventh Seal (those are the only two Bergmans I've seen).

I'm about half way through Repo Man and its very strange. Doesn't seem like something Criterion would release. But I like it so far.

some of them are easier to read depending which side you face out.

i had my fanny and alexander facing in for that reason, but then ocd kicked in and had to turn it around to match all the others.

i really wish they all came in regular plastic cases. i might have to buy some and make custom covers.

side note:
finally watched videodrome last night. i wasn't really into the first half, but it got just weird enough by the end that its a keeper. long live the new flesh!

Blimp is better than Red Shoes IMO. I love Red Shoes, but after the amazing ballet sequence, it tapers a bit. Blimp is just an outstanding achievement, the oft-quoted 'British Citizen Kane' description is apt IMO.

I must strongly recommend Smiles of a Summer Night. It fully explores the comedic, playful side of Bergman which really helps you appreciate that aspect of his more serious films. My girlfriend was initially lukewarm on Seventh Seal, but after watching Smiles and revisiting Seventh Seal, she fell in love with it. Getting a wide view of a director's work I think is always important in appreciating individual films.

I am so in love with the girl I deal with at my local B&N, she always has this little nervous laugh she does every time I run into her there. She also is the best when it comes to using coupons and also lets me cross them over with multiple purchases.

I nabbed:

Belle De Jour
Branded to Kill
Cul-De-Sac
Insignificance
Ivan's Childhood
La Jetee/Sans Soleil
Marketa Lazarova
Repulsion
Sweet Smell of Success
Things to Come
and Videodrome.

Oh and I pre-ordered Lord of the Flies too!!!

All of these here are A+ purchases.

Yeah, I just put that ("Colonel Blimp") on my wishlist! Thanks for the recommendation.

I'll check it out. I also need to rewatch The Seventh Seal. I loved the atmosphere of it. I'm planning on watching Fanny and Alexander at some point too.
