I agree with Hard Eight in the fact that it needs to be resurrected from it's 90's obscurity, but Punch Drunk (love me some Elswit lens flares) is inevitably coming to blu sooner than later.

Can anyone recommend out of these Bergman films which one I should purchase/see next?
I already own The Seventh Seal, Wild Strawberries, Summer with Monika, and Summer Interlude. |

Finally checked out Kon Ichikawa's THE MAKIOKA SISTERS tonight, which elegantly captures the mood of the Junichiro Tanizaki novel on which it's based.
Fans of the movie should definitely check out the book, one of my all-time favorites. The film wisely pared down the novel's intricate plot and near-epic timeframe considerably, but if you loved these characters on film, you'll love getting even deeper into their lives with the novel. Anyway, a thoughtful and gorgeous film. |

Fanny and Alexander is an absolute masterpiece. Likely my 4th favorite film of all time. I absolutely believe you should pick it up. If you're not opposed to DVD, the Faith Trilogy contains my second favorite Bergman, The Silence.

Just my opinion but I've seen some of the Early Bergman stuff and I would put that aside for later or not at all - found them rather heavy-handed compared to the later films. F&A is I guess the most popular of the others, but I personally don't care that much for it (the length is an issue for me, I prefer a concise story to a sprawling saga). The Magician and Smiles... are pretty nice, but not for me potential re-watch material. Like someone else said, if you don't already have it the Bergman Trilogy (Through A Glass Darkly / Winter Light / The Silence) is a much better choice than all of these, although I can understand if you're holding off on that in anticipation of an HD release for the same. I would gladly double-dip on that one, it's a treasure. Also, Cries and Whispers.

I got the Varda box a few weeks back. So many viewing options as of late, but it's near the top of the pile for me also. Probably will do the same with it as the Demy box and spread it out over 2 or 3 months, preferably pretty soon, more likely a bit later in the year (got things around the house that are supposed to get done this summer, and it's slipping away a bit too quickly). |

I kinda wanted to thank everyone in this thread for answering any questions I've posed and responding to comments. It was nice participating in this sale (for the first time, really) and I was able to catch up on some great films...some, I've seen, some I just heard about, and some were new experiences that were thoroughly enjoyed. I got six since the current sale started (waiting on 3 in the mail) and again...just wanted to say thanks. Here's everything I have so far.

I've always had a list of Criterion titles I wanted to see again or for the first time, but I never acted on it. I can't explain why. |

if you are not that much into the "criterion" on the cover and maybe region free as well, i think you can get all the OOP criterions from the UK in nearly the same quality.
im not sure if i should get "the Last emperor" from criterion or the japanese release, thats way more expensiv but has the longer cut . does someone actually prefer the new aspect ratio and the shorter cut? |
