I agree with Hard Eight in the fact that it needs to be resurrected from it's 90's obscurity, but Punch Drunk (love me some Elswit lens flares) is inevitably coming to blu sooner than later.

Can anyone recommend out of these Bergman films which one I should purchase/see next?
  • Fanny and Alexander
  • The Magician
  • Smiles of a Summer Night
  • Early Bergman (Eclipse)

I already own The Seventh Seal, Wild Strawberries, Summer with Monika, and Summer Interlude.

Finally checked out Kon Ichikawa's THE MAKIOKA SISTERS tonight, which elegantly captures the mood of the Junichiro Tanizaki novel on which it's based.

Fans of the movie should definitely check out the book, one of my all-time favorites. The film wisely pared down the novel's intricate plot and near-epic timeframe considerably, but if you loved these characters on film, you'll love getting even deeper into their lives with the novel.

Anyway, a thoughtful and gorgeous film.

Fanny and Alexander is an absolute masterpiece. Likely my 4th favorite film of all time. I absolutely believe you should pick it up. If you're not opposed to DVD, the Faith Trilogy contains my second favorite Bergman, The Silence.

Just my opinion but I've seen some of the Early Bergman stuff and I would put that aside for later or not at all - found them rather heavy-handed compared to the later films. F&A is I guess the most popular of the others, but I personally don't care that much for it (the length is an issue for me, I prefer a concise story to a sprawling saga). The Magician and Smiles... are pretty nice, but not for me potential re-watch material. Like someone else said, if you don't already have it the Bergman Trilogy (Through A Glass Darkly / Winter Light / The Silence) is a much better choice than all of these, although I can understand if you're holding off on that in anticipation of an HD release for the same. I would gladly double-dip on that one, it's a treasure. Also, Cries and Whispers.

On an aside, have people here seen this Danish film called Silkevejen? I thought it was rather interesting, with some Bergman-esque elements.

Just finished Life Of Oharu. What did I let you folks convince me to watch? Boy was that a depressing film. Extremely realistic and wonderfully acted, but almost painful.

Yes, Criterion, put out The Passenger! Great pick.

Yes and yes! I hope to see Hard Eight come out in a future BD release. I predict it will be released within the next 12 months on Criterion. You heard it here first. ha ha.

If you preferred the Summers go for the Early Bergman set. If you preferred The Seventh Seal go for The Magician and if you enjoyed Wild Strawberries go for Fanny and Alexander or Smiles of a Summer Night. But as previously posted, the Trilogy are his best films released by Criterion (10/9/9.5 out of 10 for me) but they will probably be upgraded to BD next year (after a possible Persona release).

Last year I finally went thru the French Demy box I bought 2 years prior, such a great watch, spread over a few months time. Recommended (though go with the Young Girls Of Rochefort blu in place of the box set's dvd (haven't been brave enough to check out the Lola blu as of yet)).

I got the Varda box a few weeks back. So many viewing options as of late, but it's near the top of the pile for me also. Probably will do the same with it as the Demy box and spread it out over 2 or 3 months, preferably pretty soon, more likely a bit later in the year (got things around the house that are supposed to get done this summer, and it's slipping away a bit too quickly).

I kinda wanted to thank everyone in this thread for answering any questions I've posed and responding to comments. It was nice participating in this sale (for the first time, really) and I was able to catch up on some great films...some, I've seen, some I just heard about, and some were new experiences that were thoroughly enjoyed. I got six since the current sale started (waiting on 3 in the mail) and again...just wanted to say thanks. Here's everything I have so far.

do you sometimes regret spending that much money on other blurays (since you got over 900) instead of criterion releases? since you startet your collection now.

was just a question that i ask myself alot recently.

Not really. I mean, there's moments I regret because if I was more open years ago like I am now, I could have gotten a few titles that I was interested in before they went out of print, but it's cool. I'll still be getting my "regular" movies every month, but when sales like this come up...I'll try to save so I can catch up.

I've always had a list of Criterion titles I wanted to see again or for the first time, but I never acted on it. I can't explain why.

if you are not that much into the "criterion" on the cover and maybe region free as well, i think you can get all the OOP criterions from the UK in nearly the same quality.

im not sure if i should get "the Last emperor" from criterion or the japanese release, thats way more expensiv but has the longer cut .

does someone actually prefer the new aspect ratio and the shorter cut?
