Need to see that one.

I'm still waiting for Pretty in Pink on BluRay. maybe the Criterion edition will include a live performance of OMD and/or The Psychedelic Furs.

And while we are on the topic of 80's music: a 'Til Tuesday Criterion release will be the most cherished item of my entire collection (just about)

There are quite a few movies that I simply have no interest whatsoever in owning (the Wes Anderson movies, Salo, Antichrist, Life During Wartime, etc.) for me to justify buying them simply to have the complete Criterion Collection.

In fact, I'm actually...(drumroll, please)...pretty content with the Criterion movies that I have right now. There are more titles that I'm planning to buy with this current sale, but they're all "second priority level" titles that I've held off on buying or upgrading from DVD for a long while.

If all of the Criterion titles that I do not currently own were to go out of print tomorrow, I'd be disappointed, but I would not be devastated. The Blu-rays and DVDs that I currently own are where it's at.

I'm content too! There's a few past titles I want, but I'm no longer in that 'can't wait for another sale' stage where I'm still completing my collection (except with new releases, of course). I still want to fill in the gaps, but there are some films I will definitely not be buying too.

I need to get a lot of Criterion Blu-Rays still as I'm still a noob when it comes to owning Criterions, but I don't even have a need to own half of the collection, let alone the whole thing.

That's the important thing. Just have a collection that you will ENJOY. Going through my films lately has really helped me with figuring out what I like and don't like, what I would like to rewatch and not rewatch, etc.

It's unfortunate that I always realize too late that excessive spending and being a completist isn't all that rewarding in the end, especially if you don't enjoy everything you purchased. Just out of curiosity, what other titles are you interested in purchasing?

I started my Fellini experience with Amarcord. It really feels likes a slice of life. I do respect Fellini, but his films don't connect with me personally. Maybe I need to get older and develop a general taste of big-breasted women?

The Criterion website lists 249 titles on Blu-ray, and I currently own 63 (63 SKUs, that is. If counting individual Blu-ray movies within the multiple sets, I own more.).

I could see myself owning half of the currently available Blu-rays someday, but not many more than that.

I'm sure that there are several undiscovered Criterion titles out there with which I would fall in love if I gave them a chance, but the same goes a lot of non-Criterion titles floating around out there in the great blue yonder. I'll never see all of the awesome movies in the world (but it's fun trying to do so).

I liked it (I'm assuming you're talking about Hanna here) a lot more than I expected. I completely agree that it worked very well as a fun action thriller but I also really like all the dark fairy tale elements/imagery.

It probably didn't hurt that I had just watched (and absolutely loved) Run Lola Run a week or so earlier. I think that kind of primed my palate for a quirky mix of surrealism and action with a driving techno/synth score.

Here's my list of "second priority level" Criterion Blu-rays that I would like to own, but that I did not rush out to buy with my first priority titles.
The ones in italics are titles that I owned on DVD, sold in anticipation of buying the Blu-ray, but have not yet got around to buying the Blu-ray. The ones in regular font will be blind buys.

The Life and Death of Colonel Blimp
Bigger Than Life
The Double Life of Veronique
Three Colors Trilogy

High and Low
Rashomon

Kes
The Killing
The Magician
Smiles of a Summer Night
Ministry of Fear
Kuroneko
The Phantom Carriage
Beauty and the Beast

The Red Shoes
Design for Living
David Lean Directs Noël Coward
Repulsion
Robinson Crusoe on Mars
The Rules of the Game

The Samurai Trilogy
Sansho the Bailiff
Senso
Summer Interlude
Summer with Monika
Umberto D.

I'll probably buy The Life and Death of Colonel Blimp and Bigger Than Life tomorrow or later on during the sale.

I may or may not get around to buying all of these. If I were in a huge hurry to buy them, then I would have bought them already. They all have my interest, though.

If I go to Barnes & Noble tomorrow, then The Life and Death of Colonel Blimp and Bigger Than Life are definite purchases.

I'm enthused about The Life and Death of Colonel Blimp after watching Black Narcissus for the first time this weekend.
I've been thinking a lot about Bigger Than Life lately, because I'm in the sort of mood for a dark-edged 1950s flick, and I've heard that the Blu-ray picture quality is astoundingly good.

Kes may feature into the equation, but I dunno. I've had a hankering recently to ogle Irène Jacob in high definition.

Bigger Than Life looks fantastic. I can't remember if I watched it on my old 50" set or my current 55" but I was bowled over by that rich, almost over the top technicolor (technically DeLuxe but you know what I mean) look.

It was definitely one of those 'see, now this is why I love BD' experiences.

It's one of those "Desiring is more rewarding than getting" situations. I've done it before-Had to have every issue of Famous Monsters of Filmland. Did it, bagged them up, and put them in a closet. It was more fun hunting them down than the end result. I should sell them; I know they're worth quite a bit, but remembering the time and effort collecting, I just can't/won't do it. At least with my other hobby-vintage posters-I know I can never get them all so I narrowed my scope to a certain era with a certain type. Criterionwise-I know there are certain films I don't like so right away the completist issue is moot.

Your words resonate with me too. I probably own just over half of the Criterion Collection on Blu-ray now, but I still can't see myself having to buy every single release. Lately I've been buying Criterion releases that I normally wouldn't be interested in. Sometimes I wonder if I am going against my nature and "forcing" myself to love classic films that I normally wouldn't want to watch. I mean, that sounds like blasphemy that there are classic films out there that I don't like. I guess not everyone agrees that a 4 star film is a 4 star film just like a 1 star film is a 1 star film. I'm thinking of selling off my Criterion DVD duplicates to a used record exchange store here while their values are still intact. The question is, what is the best outlet to sell off my used Criterion DVDs? I think I'm better off with my used record store chain than Ebay.

I guess I just became more of a "completist" in recent months ever since I started posting on this forum regularly as I feel the need to share my "hauls" and favorite films. But maybe I should go back in time and just be a casual Criterion fan and not someone who is now obsessed with it. How do I reverse the addiction?

That's the most explicit of Fellini's films I've seen though. His films all have adult content and serious undertones, but it's more subtle; even
[Show spoiler]the orgy at the end of La Dolce Vita
you could miss if you weren't paying attention. I almost didn't like Amarcord, because it seems so much more vulgar than his other works - I like em sexy but classy!

Save your purchases til the 50% off sales! That's what keeps me in check, I'd never get more than 3 during any given purchase, because I hate spending a lot at once. That way I really look forward to each B&N visit and I have to be thoughtful in which ones I select.

My routine the past year or so has been plowing through as many Criterion rentals as possible during the "off-season," then buying a handful each week during the 50% off sales!

Hi...but I do this! I only buy Criterion Blu-rays during the 50% sales twice a year at B&N. I load up from anywhere between 15-30 films during each sale. I'm currently at 20 purchases and counting during the current sale. I only buy 4 films on each visit. Part of this is due to my coupons I use that I want to maximize with my purchases. I've made 5 visits and bought 4 films on each one. Between sales I rent Criterions from my local libraries and then make a checklist of which films I liked and aim to buy when the next sale strikes! That's how I roll. Sounds like you do the same thing too.
