"He pulls a knife, you pull a gun. He sends one of your men to the hospital, you send one of his to the morgue."
"Somebody messes with me, I'm gonna mess with him."
Etc. etc.

I owned a VHS tape of The Untouchables in college, when I had more movie appreciation years under my belt, and, although I found Kevin Costner's acting to be wooden, I still loved the movie.

I have not seen The Untouchables in almost 20 years, and, for some reason, I really have no urge to revisit it. I'm thinking that I burned myself out in repeat viewings at a younger age to the extent that the movie no longer reverberates with me. I've viewed it far more than I've viewed any other De Palma film, though.

Scarface always seemed too cartoonish to me, even when I saw it back in the 1980s. I do, however, love the fact that many of the Cuban or Latino actors who starred in the film each played multiple villain roles in the Miami Vice episodes years later.
I know what you mean.

I can take or leave gangster / mafia films. The only ones I REALLY recall loving are GoodFellas and Road To Perdition. I'm not a big fan of Carlito's Way, Casino, The Godfather, Scarface, and while I enjoyed it, I can take or leave The Untouchables.

Thanks for the feedback! I'll try to grab a copy from Amazon. I just love the look of this movie

As far as romanticized gangster films, there is nothing better than Once Upon a time in America. Do yourself a favor and check it out.

I haven't seen many Coen Brothers, but I'm looking forward to that one and Blood Simple the most.

Blood Simple was underwhelming for me on first watch, but enjoyed it a lot more on the second. (Possibly also because the first watch was a pretty bad ex-rental VHS and the second was a good DVD copy)

Miller's Crossing is my 'I can watch it any time' movie. I do love most Coen Bros movies a lot.

Which one? I definitely need to add Adaptation to my collection, as well as Synecdoche, New York. One of my favorite American films of the last decade, and possibly ever.

Not that there's anything wrong with Image's Adaptation release.

It's definitely barebones but it's a pretty nice transfer.

Would you consider History of Violence to be a "gangster/mafia" film?

Really sad to see The Godfather on your "not a big fan of" list. To me, that film is a true masterpiece, and not only Coppola's, but any director's.

I honestly forgot about that film. It was pretty good, if I recall, and it had a nice little twist.

I haven't seen The Godfather since I was like twelve or thirteen and I was premature to the movie scene. However, I didn't see all the hype surrounding it, as it was a good film, but not THE BEST. You know what I mean?

Boy, you are going to be embarrassed by those words when you rewatch it. ;P

I'm so happy that I have seen The Godfather several times on the big screen. I still consider Apocalypse Now and The Conversation as his two finest films though.

The Conversation is my favorite Coppola film; A timeless trip into paranoia.

Twelve year olds just don't know cinema. Period. Hell, even the high school version of me had pretty poor taste (I once loved Elizabethtown).

One of these days I'm gonna have the Blow Up/The Conversation/Blow Out triple feature. Just love how those films visually and aurally convey the process of investigation.

How reliable and quick is that site? They have a copy for $60 new and I think that's a fair price so I might pick it up.

I don't think you can truly appreciate film until you're in atleast your mid 20's. True film is about human emotion and I feel your emotions are severely muted as a teenager and the mind isn't able to fully explore them. Besides, most films tackle real life issues, of which most teens, no matter how hard they may try to relate, have no experience in.

Generally agree, but I have a bone to pick with the bolded. Last week the major releases were Red 2, RIPD, Turbo & The Conjuring. None of them were about real human emotion or real life issues...just sayin'

Chiming in on the DePalma talk, I've been planing on watching some of his films that I haven't seen yet. I just saw Carlito's Way (which honestly wasn't anything special for me) and plan on checking out The Untouchables, followed by Blow Out and Dressed to Kill.

I recently realized how much I love gangster films. Goodfellas, The Godfather and A Bronx Tale are some of my favorites. Maybe it's the Italian in me.
