hmmmm, maybe i'll find another film i wrote about.

ok, i found these essays that i find fitting..

here are your choices:

The Searchers

A midterm exam on the British empire film genre (from my British film class)
A final exam on Ealing Studios (from my British film class)

WEEKEND. Yeah, WEEKEND. The trailer does look pretty interesting, actually. The film itself has its moments, indeed some very interesting moments, and certainly makes some interesting and valid points... and then it makes them again, and again, and again... Godard's WEEKEND is a film to appreciate without really liking. Part of the problem is that none of the characters are really at all likable and the satire is so dark and heavy-handed that it's more annoying than even wryly amusing. It's at its best those times that it's playing around with the medium in a metafictional way but even then it looks like it's merely trying to be clever. Criterion's bonus features definitely help in the film's appreciation but a good audio commentary might have helped even more. I think that Louis Malle's BLACK MOON, with some similar themes, is more entertaining, weird and possibly disturbing as it may be.

Just watched The Devil's Backbone, and it was everything that I hoped it would be. Emotionally engaging, entertaining, creepy, poignant, surprising. Very well done!

There actually was a commentary track on the old New yorker dvd of Week End which would almost be enough for me to pick it up if I also didn't hate the film, but Im definitely in that camp as well. Theres some enjoyable things in it and some funny moments but a couple of the sequences just really kill it for me, the main one being the music critic at the piano.
Drove me up the wall!

Weekend has a spectacular first half but the latter half is much too much politically oriented to truly enjoy, IMO. I do admire the film as a whole, though.

Always enjoy films where none of the characters are likeable . Black Moon is definitely an enjoyable film, in a dark twisted WTF is going on way. That was one of the most surprising films I've seen thus far. Wish there were more special features on that one but l believe even Malle said he doesn't quite understand the film either, but it exists. God bless him for that!

I've been saving my nickels for months - My grab so far:

Devil's Backbone
Ice Storm
Babette's Feast
On the Waterfront
Seven Samurai
Tokyo Drifter
In the Mood for Love
Battle of Algiers

I have enough for 1 more of the following:

Complete Jean Vigo
Sansho the Bailiff
3 Women

I'm leaning toward the Altman but see almost nothing written about that one. Any recommendations?

I would go with The Complete Jean Vigo. You not only get L'Atalante but Zero for Conduct as well. Both films are absolute masterpieces and the supplements are some of Criterion's best.

I love 3 Women, I think it to be one of Altman's best and if you've never seen it I hope you enjoy it. I've probably watched it 20 or more times. Shelly Duvall is great in it. I love the films music also. But I could be in a minority.
