Second weekend: Fanny and Alexander, Smiles of a Summer Night, Wild Strawberries, and Sansho the Bailiff

Third weekend: Black Narcissus, Black Orpheus, Ivan's Childhood, and The Devil's Backbone

Funny, it didn't register with me until I was looking at it after I got home, that The Devil's Backbone is spine #666.
Ha, yes, fittingly that is #666. I'm sure Guillermo del Toro is pretty happy about that one. As for hauls, I wish I could restrain myself to going to the store/s once a week but its usually twice a week for me.

This is one of the few advantages of living in America at least for me, that I can buy Criterions for a cheaper price using coupons at a bookstore chain that soon may go out of business.

I'm able to use the 5/50 coupon every time I go to a store. I managed to also get to use the 8/40 coupon 3 times as well! (Shoah, Heaven's Gate and On the Waterfront).

Holy smokes! I bought this a few weeks ago during the sale mainly for the music and OMD and Tangerine Dreams songs. I think I might just finally watch this tonight now. Yes, in fact I will!

Indeed. I had seen it when I first got into horror, and it was truly horror 101 for me. That list introduced me to all the classic horror films.

My haul for this sale:

The Ice Storm
Black Narcissus
Salo (have to see it once, then may sell)
Leopard
Les Diaboliques
Summer with Monika
Summer Interlude

I had to slow my roll although I wanted the Magician. There are so many coming up that I have to be saved up for the November sale. I have my eyes on I Married a Witch, La Notte, the Cassavetes set AND the Rosselini set. The fact that the James Dean set should be around that time too will destroy my pocketbook.

Just think when I was done, B&N had to send me two 20 percent coupons, and pull me back in!

So far this sale I've purchased The Thin Red Line, Hunger, and Fish Tank. I think I may have to get The Leopard. It's one of my favorite films, and have been wanting to upgrade my dvd. Not committed on what to do with the second coupon yet.

Thinking of upgrading Charade, Umberto D, M or buying new Revanche, The Ice Storm, or The 39 Steps...hmmmm.

I'm thinking Black Narcissus, Wages of Fear and either Devils Backbone or 400 Blows. Thoughts?

I really enjoyed Black Narcissus, but I blind-bought and loved The Devil's Backbone. Probably my favorite Guillermo del Toro movie now.

I own but have not watched the other two, but judging from fellow members' responses, they're both well-worth owning, as well.

Gave in and ordered Kagemusha and Revanche. Thought I was done until Nov., but apparently not. Revanche is a blind buy, but it seems like the type of movie that I absolutely love. I am officially tapped out until Nov...I promise.

Good God Almighty. Even on my largest CC sale sprees, I've only spent around $500 or less and I thought that was nuts.

Well, I can't say I don't understand the condition. My 417 Criterions, Eclipse, EAH would contradict me if I did. Lol.

Default Criterion Collection Discussion

I watched my copy of The Gold Rush today. I had previously seen the original 1925 version that was on the MK2 DVD (before the additional restoration was done) so I decided to watch the 1942 version today. I'll have to watch the (superior, IMO) 1925 version again. Other than the commentary, I also watched all of the special features and read the booklet, all of which were great.

I just rented the old Criterion DVD from my local library. I think Studio Canal owns the rights, so it's probably unlikely. Of course, the case also has the Rialto Pictures logo on it so they own or owned it in some way.

I spent about $300 on Criterion Blu-rays this month, but that's a new personal record for me.

[Show spoiler]The Gold Rush
Modern Times
The Great Dictator
Monsieur Verdoux
Island of Lost Souls
M
Black Narcissus
The Life and Death of Colonel Blimp
Lord of the Flies
The Double Life of Veronique
Three Colors Trilogy
(box set)
Yojimbo/Sanjuro (box set)
La Jetée / Sans Soleil
Bigger Than Life

I also spent $94 (shipping, etc.) on the Alfred Hitchcock: The Masterpiece Collection box set.

A little over half of the money came from selling off some old DVDs, but the rest of it still packed a nice wallet punch. I also bought several Criterion titles from the Amazon sale in June, so my collection is quite sturdy now.

I'm having flashbacks from my experience of watching Monsieur Verdoux a couple of weeks ago, by the way.

I just finished watching Alfred Hitchcock's Frenzy, and there's a physical comedy scene aboard a truck in that movie that reminded me a lot of Charlie Chaplin's skewed humor in Monsieur Verdoux. It's fascinating how both filmmakers use the comedy to help the audience relate to cold-blooded murderers, but the misadventures give a human touch to the characters in a big way.
