I want Criterion to upgrade Onibaba to Blu-ray over here on these shores. That DVD got a lot of heavy rotation under my roof, and it's a perfect horror movie.

I ran a 50K trail race a couple of years ago where part of the course veered through this field of reeds that were almost as tall as the ones in Onibaba. That was not a good moment for me. Onibaba messed me up for life when it comes to dealing with settings like that. Reeds are no good anymore.

probably you got a little faster during that field to leave the reeds behind you.

onibaba was just great.. awesome style, shots and settings. there was horror , sex, greed, jealousy , violence... and still the end stays with you for a long time.

probably i will love these 2 box sets

Eclipse Series 21:
Oshima’s Outlaw Sixties

Eclipse Series 28: The Warped World of Koreyoshi Kurahara

Who at Criterion do I contact to see about replacing a defective disc? Finally opened my copy of The Seventh Seal and although the disc looks perfect, it freezes at the exact same spot and I can't do anything. Tried another player but same thing happened. Don't have original receipt and bought way too long ago to return?

UPDATE: Ignore the above, I found the email address.

I just finished watching Nolan's Following and found it to be really quite enjoyable; it's like the older brother of Memento. I'm definitely adding it to my wish list.

And yet when these guys get the right material and a director to reign them in they can be really good. Travolta in A Civil Action for example.

Watching TCM last night and seeing Fail-Safe made me think it would be a perfect candidate for Criterion. It could be paired with it's TV remake somewhat along the lines of what they did for 12 Angry Men.

Nashville has been my "Most Wanted Title" on my profile on the official Criterion site for a couple years. I'm speechless.
And I really hope it doesn't come in a box. There are several Altman titles that I want come in big ol' individual packages just like On the Waterfront and Night of the Hunter. I think Nashville, with it's ranking in the AFI Top 100 and overall reputation, definitely warrants a release on that level.

I just finished The Devil's Backbone.

It was honestly a lot different than I had anticipated. However, it was still a very good film by Del Toro. I still prefer The Orphanage to this film, as it's straight-up horror / atmospheric horror throughout, but this film definitely established how good Del Toro truly is.

Excellent PQ / AQ. Recommended!

Yes! Would love to see McCabe come to Blu Ray too. Very excited for Nashville!

YES! I watched Identification of a Woman late last night and thought it was actually a good film. I totally enjoyed the OMD songs in there as well as XTC, Tangerine Dream and Japan. The music at the very end was amazing. I feel Antonioni was trying to get some sci-fi into this film but that was a poor idea with poor execution. The creativity was fantastic though with whatever "sci-fi" there was in the film. The movie is about relationships first and foremost and I could actually relate to the main male character as a person who has drifted around, never meeting the right woman (though I'm not quite the "player" he was with all those flings, unless you can count my 20s). It's a great exploration of the needs of men and women and the miscommunication that comes from meaningless sex and relationships. If I were you, Great Owl, I would buy this film, especially if you like 80s new wave/post punk music. Though the music didn't dominate the film by any means, the selections used and placement in the film were very effective. It's a cool flick.

Magnolia is UTTER BRILLIANCE.

P.T. Anderson is one of the few directors who can put a film together like that and make it FLOW. He's brilliant with flowing scenes from one to the next. He's a water sign (Cancer), though, so no surprise.

I'm kind of shocked at how many people on this board haven't seen Nashville!! It's a great movie. Took a couple of views for it to sink in. But I'm VERY happy to upgrade my DVD if this is in fact true.

I was just re-watching Gosford Park over the weekend & was thinking how that would be a great Criterion title. And I'd still really love to upgrade my Short Cuts Criterion DVD to Blu-ray.

But I will happily take Nashville (ecstatically, even). I just hope it'll be available on Blu-ray too!

It's funny, I will have a degree in Civil Engineering this winter, yet I have not seen A Civil Action.

Thank you, seņor.

Magnolia is my all time favorite film, infact it is the film that singlehandedly made me a cinephile.

I read this short book (140 pages) by Christina Lane on the film and I thought it was a very decent read. I especially loved how she dove into the role media plays in the film-especially what it suggests.

I rented the old, OOP Criterion DVD of Nights of Cabiria from my local library and watched it tonight. I can't say that I enjoyed it as much as 8 1/2 or La Dolce Vita, but it is a good film. Great (sometimes over the top) acting by Masina. Since Studio Canal owns this one (though Rialto Pictures partially owns it or something) I assume that a Criterion rerelease is unlikely?
