Well, the real problem with Bogart's films vis-a-vis Criterion is that Warner has the rights to most of his best, and wouldn't likely license them to Criterion

That's why I suggested The Harder They Fall since it's a Columbia title and Criterion released On the Waterfront which was also a Columbia/Schulberg film.

The Criterion upgrade i want is The Harder they Come. A lossless soundtrack would sound KILLER! In my opinion it is the greatest soundtrack of all time.

The interesting thing about the Bogart film is that the central boxer, Toro Moreno, is based on real-life fighter Primo Carnero. Carnero was a huge man, built up by the promoters as being unbeatable-then he ran into Max Baer! In this film Baer portrays a fictional champion but, in fact, is really playing himself. It's one of the great films about boxing and (pun intended) pulls no punches. If you like boxing films or On the Waterfront I'm sure you'd enjoy this one.

Thanks for the rec. I love On the Waterfront and classic boxing films-saw Body and Soul two months ago and loved it-so I think I will like that one too, especially with the autobiographical angle.

Body and Soul is great. It and The Breaking Point are probably my two favorite Garfield films.

No! I've been watching a ton of Karen Black movies lately, via the America Lost and Found set and Hitchcock's Family Plot. So sorry to hear this.

Although perhaps her most memorable film is the made-for-TV movie Trilogy of Terror.

I stopped by Movie Stop to browse around during lunch break (I ought to stop doing this.), and found a mint condition used copy of the 1927 movie, Wings. It's a blind buy, but I've always been intrigued to see it. It was the first Best Picture winner, the aerial fight sequences are rumored to be excellent, and Clara Bow is a decent retro hottie.

After The Gold Rush, Safety Last!, Nosferatu, and others, I'm always on the lookout for additions to my silent 1920s cinema collection.
The aerial fight sequences are not merely rumored to be excellent, they are excellent! No CGI here -- the actors had to learn to fly their own planes and operate the plane-mounted cameras while flying! Paramount's restored Blu-ray looks very very good, and the new stereo recording of the reconstructed original score and sound effects are phenomenal. I also like the old Gaylord Carter pipe organ score quite a bit, which is included as an alternate track.

You might also want to try simulating the "Magnascope" process used in a few theatres on its first release by zooming your picture to the full 16x9 ratio for about 9 minutes (not stretching, just zooming) after the title card reading "The whir of wings..." that comes about 41 minutes and 18 seconds into the film. When the picture fades to black at 50:45 (before the title "Weeks pass.." be sure to go back to standard 4x3 pillarbox or too much will be cropped. There's another Magnascope sequence at about 56 minutes into the movie that should run through about 1:03:47 when it fades out before the title "The reward of valor." Originally these sequences zoomed the picture out in all directions, not just to the sides, except in theatres with wide stage prosceniums that had room for only a wider, not also a taller screen.

Enjoy! There's a small but nice selection of silents on Blu-ray, that is gradually expanding. If you order the Eureka SUNRISE, you should save postage by getting the BFI's GREAT WHITE SILENCE at the same time. Amazing footage from the Antarctica a century ago! Kino's got a few other notable silent besides the Keaton collection, Milestone has a nice 3-disc set of Mary Pickford films, and don't forget Criterion's THE PHANTOM CARRIAGE.

Just got done watching Down By Law. This and Stranger Than Paradise are the only Jarmusch films I've seen so far and while I liked Stranger Than Paradise a bit more, Down By Law is great. I'm enjoying Jarmusch's films so far. I'll be checking out Mystery Train next (assuming Netflix's "short wait" goes away soon).

Love Jarmusch. Love Stranger Than Paradise and Mystery Train. Really hope Stranger gets upgraded sooner rather than later.

After you see Dead Man, be sure to read Jonathan Rosenbaum's glowing review. He named it one of the best films of the '90's.

I hope Stranger Than Paradise comes to Blu soon too. I really want to see Permanent Vacation but I'd rather wait for the Blu instead of buying the DVD or renting disc 2 from Netflix.

It really is remarkable how strongly that still resonates.

A lot of people don't know what the hell we're talking about but the people do? They really remember it.
