Yes! I'm not expecting a whole lot from Permanent Vacation, I don't even expect it to be better than Coffee and Cigarettes, but I want to see it nonetheless. Even the worst segments in the latter weren't all that bad.

I can't wait for his upcoming vampire flick!

Back in that era there seemed to a made-for-TV movie almost for every weekday and quite a few were very good. This one and another creepy one called A Cold Night's Death (great title!) and a great noir film called Goodnight, My Love with a great pairing of Richard Boone and Michael Dunn as unlikely detectives. Good times back then.

1977 was a good year. What I remember of it. Oh, wait, I just remembered summer back at home between undergrad and grad school really sucked. No wonder I tend to forget it.

Yeah I just read about his next film. Sounds interesting. Is a US release date set yet?

I love Down by Law, but my favorite Jarmusch film of them all is Ghost Dog: The Way of the Samurai. It is one of the most enjoyable films I've ever seen, not to mention full of hilarious dry humor. I would LOVE to see this film on Criterion Blu-ray as the only Blu-ray release is a French release in Region B. I have a feeling you're going to love Mystery Train too, but wait till you get to Ghost Dog and you'll say its the best of them all, guaranteed.

The Buster Keaton box set is in my sights as well, but it's going to be months before I make that purchase. I'm biding my time.
Just remember, when you do buy, the Keaton box is considerably cheaper at ImportCDs... $160 compared to $220 at Amazon.

I'm wondering what condition the original 16mm elements are in. It always bothered me that the Criterion disc had those awful, yellow video titles, while the newer Xenon Pictures version had regular burned in film titles, and was supposedly form a new HD transfer "featuring 20 missing shots not seen for many years." I own both, but still prefer the picture quality on the Criterion, despite the titles and the missing shots.

So John from Criterion e-mailed me back and said the Summer Hours disc I was having issue with (it freezes and plays choppy at around the 52 minute mark) I could send it to them for inspection and if it is defective they'll send me a new one.

Does anyone have any recommendation on how to package it when I send it to them? I've never sent a disc only package before.

I bought a cardboard padded envelope from Staples and I wrapped my Carlos disc in paper towels and sent it out that way. Seemed to work fine.

Two months ago, I had similar issues with Lola Montes. I wrapped the case containing the disc in bubble wrap before placing it into a small cardboard envelope that I got from my local post office.

I also like the old Gaylord Carter pipe organ score quite a bit, which is included as an alternate track.

You might also want to try simulating the "Magnascope" process used in a few theatres on its first release by zooming your picture to the full 16x9 ratio for about 9 minutes (not stretching, just zooming) after the title card reading "The whir of wings..." that comes about 41 minutes and 18 seconds into the film. When the picture fades to black at 50:45 (before the title "Weeks pass.." be sure to go back to standard 4x3 pillarbox or too much will be cropped. There's another Magnascope sequence at about 56 minutes into the movie that should run through about 1:03:47 when it fades out before the title "The reward of valor." Originally these sequences zoomed the picture out in all directions, not just to the sides, except in theatres with wide stage prosceniums that had room for only a wider, not also a taller screen.

Enjoy! There's a small but nice selection of silents on Blu-ray, that is gradually expanding. If you order the Eureka SUNRISE, you should save postage by getting the BFI's GREAT WHITE SILENCE at the same time. Amazing footage from the Antarctica a century ago! Kino's got a few other notable silent besides the Keaton collection, Milestone has a nice 3-disc set of Mary Pickford films, and don't forget Criterion's THE PHANTOM CARRIAGE.
Interesting note about the widescreen-ing, hadn't been aware of that for this film before. Will look to check it out next time I screen my disk.

And I concur that the 5.1 track here is one of the best soundtracks for a silent I've heard on the format.

Though comparatively speaking there are few silent releases throughout the world, there is quite a variance therein and those that are out there are typically of high-quality, given the bodies that tend to release them.

Thanks for the suggestions!

I watched the first 40 minutes of Wings last night, but I was starting to get sleepy (not because of the movie, but because I've had a long week). I decided to postpone the rest until this evening when I can give the movie the full attention that it deserves. I was hugely impressed with the story up to that point, though, and I'll probably start over from the beginning this evening.

Thinking of some blind buys during the next big sale, looking at the following:

Safety Last!
the War Room
Following
Heaven's Gate
The Red Shoes

Any suggestions, or passes? My taste run the gamut (comedy, drama, docs, classics, etc.), so just looking for opinions on what you think of the films. Or if I only buy a handful, suggestions the priority. I have them listed in the priority i'm thinking...

Thanks!!

*edit* Here's the list of Criterion I currently own:

Wings of Desire
The Ice Storm
Traffic
The Blob
On the Waterfront
Brazil
Seven Samurai
Godzilla
Rushmore
Dazed and Confused
For All Mankind
Insignificance
Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas
The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou
Chasing Amy
