Yeah, I don't mind the case they used for Pina, Heaven's Gate, and Samurai Trilogy.

I don't see Criterion ever going back to their original digipacks, they caused a lot of problems.

I don't see why they would not just use the standard 2 disc case they have been using.

But what happpens when it's a 2 disc blu? Will that be a 4 disc case? Or 3? As in the case of Pina.

Terrence Malick's To the Wonder is about privileged white people to an arguable extent, but it's still an exceptional film.
I understand that, and I appreciate that you have the reaction of curiosity towards things you haven't experienced, as opposed to many people who have an "I think I'll hate it, so I'll hate it now" attitude. Based on what your tastes seem to be, I'd recommend it.

Malick is a great example of this issue. Though it was present in The New World, I'd like to see some more diversity in his movies (and as his films seem to move into the present, this seems more likely), because I feel it would better support his "we are all connected" philosophy, but as they are, all of his films are stunning.

They'll probably get creative with the casing for those occasional exceptions.

My spider sense just sort of went haywire with the "Dual Format" news, because I was thinking of my old Hammer Films: Icons of Suspense DVD set, which consisted of six movies on three discs that were simply stacked on top of one another with nothing to separate them.

I've gone over why I dislike Frances Ha at length before, so I'll refrain from doing so yet again.

Yeah, Dual Disc (BD + DVD) releases of Trilogies really suck. Too much bulk.

But it's a smart move. Now they don't have to mess with DVD only releases.

Was an actor in "Frances Ha" in "To Rome With Love?" Which character was she in Woody Allen's movie?

I don't.

In short, I hated the lead (not even Gerwig's immensely charming personality could fix this), Baumbach's stylistic choices didn't gel with me; making whatever dramatic weight there was inert, the thematic material that was executed in such a been-there-done-that feel has been done to the point of feeling trite, etc.

And whatever crap I get for disliking the film (to each their own, Abdrews) I just want to say I was looking forward to it. I really was. I really like Greenberg; an opinion I feel like I'm alone on.

An interesting anecdote about Frances Ha...

One of my ultrarunning friends is a 70 year-old man who spends a lot of his time running 20+ miles daily up in the mountains. He's one of the most rugged-looking people in the world, sort of like a sinewy muscular version of John Hurt in The Proposition. He posted on Facebook recently about how he was sad that he couldn't travel down to Atlanta to see a showing of Frances Ha, because he's been excited to see the movie for months and months.

To be honest, I have only seen that many new releases because of MoviePass. Also, at the start of the year I dared myself to see over 120 in theaters. I think I may just hit 150.
I saw Mud last night and it's my favourite of the year so far. Loved it! (I do have a six month old baby, so I haven't managed to see all that many new movies this year though)

Nice!

(I'm gonna try to take a step back next year...but then again, I've had a blast with MoviePass.)

I would like to, as well.

A lot of the films that I've seen this year have been a waste of time.

Do you win a prize if you see a certain amount of movies?

Sort of like George Clooney's character racking up the airline miles in that movie, Up in the Air?

(I really really did not care for Up in the Air at all, but it merits a mention in this context.)

It's not for people like you. It's for people who still buy DVDs. Now they will have the blu-ray as well, and maybe it'll encourage them to upgrade, so we can get the previous format gone for good.

It's a pretty logical move — plus, it cuts down on their overhead, because they can save money by printing only one box. So the price wouldn't go up, but technically should come down. Probably won't though.

Finally got a chance to weigh in on November's releases.

I love every single release!

City Lights is a massive win. Tokyo Story on BD is huge. Zatoichi box set is epic. Frances Ha is excellent as well.

I actually enjoyed Frances Ha when I saw this in a theater this year. I was honestly sucked right into the film. I hardly know much about Noah Baumbach's work but this movie just worked. Some of these scenes were truly unforgettable. What a great indie film!

i think the cover art for the release is great too.

And by the way...

It's so very bad. I bet CC hired JW to draw it after seeing his custom avatar.
I totally disagree. I think the artwork is superb. I love the simplicity of it. I love the blue colors. I love the whole thing. Maybe the bottom part "A film by Charles Chaplin" looks a bit odd sticking out there, but otherwise the cover art totally works.

As for the new move to Dual Disc format, this is something I'm rather concerned about. My main concern is of CONSISTENCY! I pray these cases are of the same height and dimensions as the BD cases. If these end up being larger cases (DVD size), its going to screw up how my Criterion films look on my shelves (not only that but I'll have to rearrange and modify the shelf heights - so not cool). I don't mind 2 discs in there though. As long as its not one side BD and the other side DVD (which I highly doubt anyway), I'm happy.

Anyway, great month of November in store. I probably will not buy the Zatoichi set but I'm in for everything else.
