(I really really did not care for Up in the Air at all, but it merits a mention in this context.)
No prize. I fear they will take away my card though. They're losing money by having me as a member

Zatoichi: Cover by Ron Wimberly. Additional illustrations by Greg Ruth, Paul Pope, Scott Morse, Samuel Hiti, Josh Cochran, Evan Bryce, Ricardo Venâncio, Robert Goodin, Yuko Shimizu, Jorge Coelho, Vera Brosgol, Matt Kindt, Connor Willumsen, Patrick Leger, Jim Rugg, Jhomar Soriano, Angie Wang, Ming Doyle, Caitlin Kuhwald, Benjamin Marra, Bill Sienkiewicz, Andrew MacLean, Polly Guo, Barnaby Ward, Victor Kerlow

Combined with the Seth doing the cover for City Lights, it's a huge month for comics artists at Criterion.

Even though there's no way I'm buying a Zatoichi box set, I'm really proud to see Sam Hiti associated with Criterion. In the past he's done some great posters for one of the local art-house theaters here. Hope he does more stuff for them in the future. Paul Pope and Yuko Shimizu, as well!

I'm surprised at the poor reception for the City Lights cover. Easily their second best Chaplin cover after Modern Times, and Seth seems a perfect fit for that sort of film (maybe because he also did the Make Way For Tomorrow cover?). The Great Dictator has a horrible cover, not City Lights.

Not sure how to feel about the move to dual-format. I would have loved it in, oh, 2007, when I couldn't quite afford to upgrade to Blu-ray but didn't want to keep sinking money into DVDs. It just seems a bit late in the game, and risks alienating the portion of their audience that refuses to switch formats. And if DVD production is so cheap now that they are essentially giving away free DVD editions with their Blu-rays, how about reducing the list price on DVD-only titles?

JW, of course you like it: You designed it!

Also, how can you say no to $4 Criterions?

Getting Tokyo Story even though I already have the BFI. I hope they release a poster of the artwork. It looks lovely.

It's a pretty logical move — plus, it cuts down on their overhead, because they can save money by printing only one box. So the price wouldn't go up, but technically should come down. Probably won't though.
Also...you'll have an extra DVD disc of your favorite Criterion movies that you can loan to friends to introduce them to great cinema.

There are a couple of secretaries down the hall from my office who are always listening to Phil Collins songs, talking about the latest reality shows, and buying cutsey posters and calendars for their cubicle walls (They all have that poster of the kitten hanging from the tree limb that says, "Hang in there.").

Theoretically, I might be able to take extra DVD discs of Eyes Without a Face, In the Realm of the Senses, or Salo to work and give them to these secretaries as Christmas gifts.

This. Give her this.

"Get ready for greatness, Lloyd."

Okay, I know you're on my ass about my crappy Orson Welles anti-Cloud Atlas avatar. But the power of this avatar is that the longer I feature it, the more powerful it becomes (enough to get you used to seeing this every time I post! Muahahahahaha!). I want it to burn into your senses! I want this to be unforgettable! And only then when you've just about had it and ready to light your Criterion Collection on fire, I shall change this avatar!

Fortunately, the luscious cover art for City Lights is final and will never be changed! So you'll be used to seeing this every time you're flipping through Criterions at Barnes & Noble or online.

Don't worry, soon you will realize just how brilliant it really is!

I think I like the dual format idea. I know I don't mind it at least. Now you get a little more for your money and now you can have their films on the go.

No more blue stickers though. Sorry, sticker freaks.

Who is this "Seth" anyway?

This man designed both covers. Does Seth speak?

Amazing the similarities! He must really love skylines and the color grey, this man.

True, just when I started the blue sticker obsession, Criterion has to change their whole system! Well, maybe its good. They must have heard how crazy I was and did something about it before it was too late for me. Ho ho.

I love Seth's artwork. He's a comic artist, draws a series called Pallookaville published by Drawn and Quarterly.

Say Anything! (Which really needs to be a Criterion title.)

I get along with the secretaries pretty well. I get along with everyone pretty well, actually. I'm a normal Southern good old boy on the surface, so most people in the real world do not realize that I'm a weirdo who spends an inordinate amount of time watching subtitled 1960s French gangster films and such.

I just realized something brilliant.

My avatar might be responsible for "City Lights" being written on Chaplin's hat. Maybe this artist saw what I did and came up with the idea for this cover artwork. Har har.
