Not sure how baffling it is:

- It is not a film that one could easily classify as easily likeable
- The set design, costumes, etc are just horribly dated which is odd as so many pictures set in the future that came out years before look so much better today (i.e. 2001, Alien, Star Wars, etc). The thing just reeks of 80s cheese.
- Lastly, I just do not care about the characters or the plot.

Why doesn't Criterion make a digibook? I mean, they could use the booklet that comes with the release. I think that would make a cool release.

I'm probably running this topic into the ground here, but I cannot stop thinking about Seconds. I'll probably end up naming this as the official unsung hero of 2013 Criterion releases, just as Letter Never Sent was the unsung hero release of 2012. A Man Escaped and Marketa Lazarová are competitors for the spot, of course, but Seconds still wins me over.

Seconds and Eyes Without a Face will make a glorious double feature night. Unless I get a better offer around town on Halloween night, I'm going to reserve plans for these two flicks.

I hope that everyone else is just as pumped up about Eyes Without a Face on Blu-ray as I am.

Costs. They're already trying to reduce inventory by making Dual Format releases. Producing a digibook would increase costs, and isolate Criterion buyers who have no interest in such packaging.

I've said it twice. Not sure how that is considered "trolling."

Don't really care if I'm in the minority.

They're kind of unwieldy. I don't think it would be fun to read the more substantial booklets from Criterion in this manner.

I have OCD as well so I just have to separate them from the regular cases. I have it - regular cases, thin packs (Third Man, etc), digipacks (Repo Man, etc), blu box sets, and then Criterion dvd cases followed by box set Criterion dvds/Eclipse.

Seconds is just too haunting to forget, IMO. It's been years since I've seen it (haven't even had the chance to watch my blu copy of it yet) but I still think about that ending - which I did not see coming.

It's in my top ten of all time for sure.

I have no previous viewing experience with which to compare it, but the Blu-ray looks amazing. I predicted the ending early in the film, but that did not make it any less jolting. The way that those scenes were filmed was just...wow.

Nice, my filling system is a bit more complex but it works for me. My blurays are a little less complicated, my DCU and Bond are all together, and working on moving Criterion together.

Definitely! James Wong Howe was an amazing cinematographer who also lensed the excellent Sweet Smell of Success which just so happens to be another of my top films (I have three current Criterions on my list).

James Wong Howe was quite amazing with his use of handheld cameras for this one, and the Frankenheimer commentary track has some fun anecdotes about the filming.

For instance...

The opening scene of Seconds takes place in a crowded train station. Frankenheimer and company did not want the crowd to be staring at John Randolph and the cameraman as they walked through the station, so they set up a non-functioning camera off to the side of the station by a stairway and pretended to film a love scene between a Playboy Playmate and a male model. Most of the people in the train station were understandably fixated on the fake filming set, so the scene where John Randolph is walking through the crowd looks perfectly natural.

From all this talk about Seconds, I'm thinking I need to go buy this! If just so I can contribute to the conversation.

Well, no. The set design, costumes, etc. are not dated in the slightest. They are intentionally made to look that way. It's part of the whole point and style of the picture. This is not 2001, ALIEN, or STAR WARS, or even WORLD ON A WIRE, and is not trying to be.

That said, BRAZIL is a film that is admittedly not easy for many people to like, for various reasons. It's got a quirky, oddball sense of humor. It's kind of generally strange throughout. It's not a happy or uplifting feel-good film by any means. And what's the deal with all the ducts all over the place?
