A Criterion Thread: the only place Frances Ha will ever be called mainstream.

I'd enjoy seeing it. I actually bought two beautiful bookcases from amazon a few months ago. It took me about six months to find exactly what I wanted: a bookcase that was not too tall to be out of proportion with the rest of my den, had to have doors and need to be a dark walnut color. I literally went to so many places and to so many websites (even Amazon many times) but finally found the perfect one. Amazon is not very user friendly with a lot of their furniture items. Terrible searching on there for that but came upon my current cases by random chance looking at another item on the site. I was initially going to put more than just Criterions on the shelves (like nice box sets) but I realized that my Criterions, basically, almost filled up both bookcases sans some extra space for future Criterion purchases. So all of my other blus* I put in the den closet on the old bookcase and on closet shelves to get them out of sight. *Actually the only ones that are in the cases right now are my steelbooks but they will go in the closet once the Criterions overflow onto the bottom shelf.

I also made a mistake - I actually have my Criterion blu box sets in with my Criterion digis because they are the same height.

Also, used to have my Criterions by spine but eventually put them all in alphabetical order.

Took some terribly lit phone pics real quick:

That may be because its fans are sale savvy 20-somethings.

Always interested in seeing people's Criterions!

Thanks. My ultimate goal was to have all of my blus out of sight so before I had my new bookcases I actually had them all in a chest of drawers! But I came to my senses and wanted to show some of them off --- then it spawned into just wanting my Criterions shown and the rest is history...

The only way I could get every one is if I win the lottery.

It's a tough job. I'm always a month or two behind. Hence, there are usually a handful I don't own.

I've hit 305 titles in less than a year. Selling off my old DVD collection paid for a lot of these, thankfully.

A few weeks back, I looked over my Blu-ray collection and had a Talking Heads moment. "You may say to yourself, 'My God! What I have done?'"

My collection will continue to grow steadily, but I like to chill back and rewatch stuff that I have sometimes.

Speaking of rewatching Criterion titles, I'm feeling the need to watch the 1.85:1 aspect ratio version of On the Waterfront this weekend. I watched the 1:66:1 version on Disc One when I bought the set shortly after its release, and loved it, but I want to see the shipyard in a wider screen view.

there are definitely a hundred titles I could get rid of, but ultimately it's no big deal, I got many of them cheap.

So far the only Ozu film I've seen is Tokyo Story (which I love). What should I watch next? I've been interested in Floating Weeds for a while.

Ain't that the truth? Actually, it's been quite nice. I was in a hurry to upgrade a lot of my favorites that I had on DVD.

I'm hard-pressed to come up with anything that I want to part with in my collection right now. The "All Killer, No Filler" plan has worked out quite well.

I loved watching Mud last night, by the way, but I'm glad that I rented the movie instead of blind buying it. I may buy it at some point down the road, but I've realized over the past few years that just because something makes my Top Ten of the Year does not mean that it absolutely has to be in my collection. There are a lot of movies that I hold in high esteem, but just never seem to watch multiple times.
