Definitely. I think too many people conflate direction and cinematography. But then again, the boundaries are sometimes difficult to delineate, especially when you take into account that the framing of the footage itself is often altered in post--you almost have to be on set and in the editing room to determine whom exactly did what.

Holy cow! Could it be? Somebody else who thinks Blow Out and Femme Fatale are Brian DePalma's two best films?

Most Brian De Palma films are not my personal can of worms, but I'll agree that Blow Out is his finest effort. I'll probably upgrade my old DVD at some point.

I was under the impression most hold Blow Out as De Palma's best. I know I think it is.

I really need to see Blow Out. I've been watching some of De Palma's films among many others recently so it's next on the list.

Passion is #7. I'll take it.

Passion is my favorite of his.

I would rank his films as this (based off of what I've seen).

01. Passion
02. Blow Out
03. The Untouchables
04. Dressed To Kill
05. Mission: Impossible
06. Scarface
07. Body Double
08. Carlito's Way
09. The Fury
10. Obsession
11. The Black Dahlia

I've seen very little De Palma, so it would be pointless to make a list. I've got Dressed to Kill on blu just teasing me right now. I really need to get a TV compatible with my player. I can't wait to see Snake Eyes once it hits blu as well.

Agreed. Blow Out is one of the best directed thrillers I have ever seen.

To steal your "should be CC thing", The Spectacular Now blew me away. The best of the 90-odd 2013 releases I have seen thusfar.

I'd always thought Dressed to Kill's script wasn't so successful a Hitchcock "adaptation", so much as it was an uncanny imitation of Joe Ezterhas during his Jade/Showgirls glory days. (The "comedy relief" scene where Nancy Allen and Keith Gordon discuss
[Show spoiler]sex-change operations
could've come straight out of Jagged Edge.)
But considering that the movie came out seven years before most of Ezterhas's hits, it may have actually been a formative influence on his work

Spectacular Now was simply fantastic.

Also, just saw Ain't Them Bodies Saints. That movie just begs for a Criterion release!

Agree with everything here. Well, I think I'd give the edge to Hellboy over Hellboy II, but I definitely liked the sequel.

Well, I'd say that the director has the final say when it comes to framing. I'd also say that any director that knows what he's doing will listen long and hard to the suggestions made by his cinematographer.

Me, I don't like De Palma much. The two exceptions are Carrie and Blow Out. I'd be inclined to give the nod to Carrie as the better of the two, but I've seen it more times (and much more recently) than Blow Out.

Technically, DePalma's best films--Mission:Impossible 1 and The Untouchables--are so good, we don't even remember them as being DePalma films.
Carrie and Blow Out are #'s 1 and 2 of "Best DePalma DePalma Films", and I'd also give the point to Blow Out, with a nod to Phantom of the Paradise at third. Carrie only picks up its speed at the climax.
