Here's my two cents regarding Alfred Hitchcock's Strangers on a Train, just in case any fans of Hitchcock's Criterion films are curious to check out one of his other Blu-rays. My first viewing this afternoon left me in awe, and I immediately watched the film again with the commentary track.
Now, onward to alter my Top 20 1950s films list... After that, I will watch On the Waterfront with the 1.85:1 aspect ratio. Woo hoo! Last edited by The Great Owl; 08-25-2013 at 01:44 PM. |

THE RINK is a great Chaplin short, but sadly the bonus copy on Criterion's MODERN TIMES Blu-ray is only a mediocre upscaled standard-def copy that looks about the same (maybe even not quite as good) as the old Image DVD. The Lloyd shorts on the SAFETY LAST Blu-ray, on the other hand are all true HD and look amazingly good for their age. Why not round out your silent comedy evenings by starting and/or closing with a couple of the Buster Keaton shorts from Kino's set -- I'd recommend THE GOAT and THE SCARECROW with the Chaplin films and COPS and ONE WEEK with the Lloyd films. You might try sneaking in a short Keaton feature or two, as well, like SHERLOCK JR or THE NAVIGATOR and make a real marathon of it! |

The comic is almost certainly going to be included in the eventual release. |

The reason I've selecting these films is because these are the only silent comedies I own, and I realized that a lot of films in my collection are unwatched. So I decided if I do this, I can mark The Gold Rush (1925 Version), The Rink, The Great Dictator, Safety Last!, and the 3 Llyod shorts off of my ever-growing list (I have already watched The Gold Rush (1942 Version) and Modern Times, but that was a long time ago, so I can give them a re-watching. On the dual format the dvds wouldn't be the same as the first DVDs they released would they? I like to keep the release like Brazil and Naked Lunch (i have Brazil on LD, DVD and BD and Naked Lunch DVD and BD) because I hate selling Criterion titles.

I finally sat down and watched Design for Living, my first Lubitsch. I had read that this was considered a "minor" Lubitsch, but I was pleasantly surprised at how much I enjoyed this film. Maybe it was the freedom it had being pre-code, but the frank portrayal of the relationship between the three main characters was great and defied convention at every turn.
And I instantly recognized the voice of Edward Everett Horton, who voiced the narrator in the Fractured Fairy Tales. Every time he would speak I kept hearing the theme music for those cartoons. I definitely need to get the Lubitsch Eclipse set off the shelf and dive into it. |

I stayed up watching the 1.85:1 aspect ratio version of On the Waterfront last night, and have decided that it's my favorite. The grand scale of the harbor is majestic in this ratio, and, admittedly, I like having my television screen filled with information.
It goes without saying that I loved this movie even more during this second viewing even without consideration of the aspect ratio. It's a beautifully-nuanced story with terrific actor performances from all involved. Criterion really knocked this one out of the park. I've got a free day today, so I'm in the mood to revisit Army of Shadows now. |

Yeah I too doubt this will happen. I could see a "Chaplin Shorts" box set somewhere along the line. But don't envision one of the current releases.

I just saw Woody Allen's new film Blue Jasmine in the theater last night, and wow, that was one of his best films in decades in my opinion. Cate Blanchett's performance is beyond a revelation. She should win for best leading Actress and Woody Allen should win for best Director at next year's Academy Awards.
It would be amazing if Criterion could pick up the rights for Blue Jasmine and release this on Blu-ray too. Last edited by jw007; 08-25-2013 at 05:05 PM. |
