They've been preparing a box set for it for a while, I think. There was an interview with someone earlier this month I saw who said they'd been working on a map for it.

The Amazon release is just the theatrical cut I think. There's at least two other cuts, the longer directors cut and the Roadshow cut which hardly anyone has seen.

Its been confirmed from numerous sources and one has stated that its also going to be a box set (I'm assuming a digipack like On the Waterfront got)

Anyways, totally down for Nashville and Grey Gardens. Havent seen the others but a bunch of them have been on the list of things to check out.
Just hoping that we won't have to wait till next October for Eraserhead and Scanners

The Complete Eric Rohmer set is still my most wanted for the year, but this set is a close second, there's some fantastic extras lined up.
Annual or bi-annual would be incredible. I'm not sure if the money's there, but I sure know I will support.

The month now gives me added incentive to finally check out more of the Maysles' work.

It's from the 1966 John Frankenheimer film, Seconds, which was released last month as an awesome Criterion title.

In all my excitement about Nashville, it seems I overlooked Investigation of a Citizen Above Suspicion. I admit I've never seen it but it looks very intriguing. Due to the quirks of the Oscar nomination process, it won the Oscar for Best Foreign Film in 1970, then was nominated for Best Screenplay in 1971!

the films in the Scorsese World Cinema set don't seem to have any plots that interest me in the slightest,
then you should definitly watch "the housemaid"

(eraser head, the brood, scanners.. all avaible in the UK and AU)

I have to agree, and the artwork for the cover is fantastic. They really should consider making it a poster.

Question about these new dual format editions.

Is criterion still producing DVD's separately? I would have less of a problem with these stupid combo packs if studios weren't ALSO still making DVD versions. Let it go! It makes no sense. You pack in a DVD with the BD then go and make a entire DVD release.

Let DVD go. Disneys DVD sized BD cases are beyond dumb. Like wow really????

Interesting. It's kind of a weird selection for them I think.

The existing blu-ray is really good, but I remember there being discussion/debate back when it released about the existance of Roadshow Cut.

Well, not everything is going to appeal to everyone. And I can see someone being disappointed that something they were hoping for didn't materialize.

That said, I think it's a good solid month's worth of releases.

Oh well. That's the month the two remaining Sinbad movies come out from the company that shall not be named, so I didn't really have the money for other stuff anyway. That and it's Christmas month.

I know a lot of you were wanting Nashville, so kudos to you. I can't stand country music.
I don't like country music either but you don't have to be to like this film. A little knowledge on who the figures are that Altman is mocking is useful, but most of the country songs in Nashville are slyly satirical, it's hard to distinguish them from the genuine article, that's what's so funny about it! Haven Hamilton's "200 Years" seems like the blueprint for Toby Keith's entire output.

I've been (purposely) away for a few hours busy with some work stuff, but here's my weigh-in on December...

Investigation of a Citizen Above Suspicion looks insanely cool, and it looks right up my alley. I can see myself making a purchase of this one with the big Christmas sale prices everywhere.

Nashville is probably a go for me. I've always heard good things about this, and it would be a good first Altman film for me.

Grey Gardens... Nothing about this title quickens my pulse, but I have not spent much time researching it.

Martin Scorsese’s World Cinema Project looks fantastic. I've always wondered why there are not many African titles in the Criterion Collection, although I am sure that the amount of movies released there does not match the sheer number of films released elsewhere in the past. All of the titles look intriguing, though. I'm sure that this will hit right smack in the middle of some cool December sales.

ok, cool. one critic on rotten tomatoes said "Creepy, Twilight Zone-type tale starring Rock Hudson, directed by John Frankenheimer."

twilight zone type tale? would you agree? if yes, then add yet another one on my to see list.

I was under the impression that the DVD releases would be elimited. Effectively streamlining Criterion's biz by pushing the BD Combo releases.

I suppose that's one way to look at it: if you're going to have a heavy spend in November because of the Zatoichi box, you can catch your breath in December.

Criterion's explanation implies they are making 1 SKU going forward, instead of 2 separate SKU for DVD and blu-ray. I agree it is stupid to make a combo pack, and then a separate edition specific for DVD. But it doesn't sound like that's what's going on.

I really wish that DVD would have gone away years ago, but I guess this Criterion announcement is the final nail in that wish. At least for a few years.

It's really going to be annoying for box sets. I don't care what they say as far as efficiency and packaging. It's a nuisance to have a bunch of extra discs. I can deal with a 2 disc set just fine (1 DVD and 1 blu-ray doesn't bother me). But a 2 disc blu-ray is now going to be 4 discs? (so this will effect the simpler packaging on what would be 2 disc blu-rays) And the Zatiochi set that could have been 10 disc set is going to be 25 discs? I don't get how that can possibly be more economical for them. I think just having that many useless discs is a turn off to me. It just seems ridiculous. Basically an entire spindle worth of DVD's I don't want.

In truth, it's going to take me quite a while to catch up with the October titles that I want.
