Abdrews, is your top 20 on your blog still accurate?

Gotta say, some choices surprised me (namely your number one.) Expected more Antonioni to be higher.

EDIT: Ah, I see you've changed it slightly since I looked at it a couple of weeks ago.

I find myself buying most of my movies these days from the Criterion Collection. I hardly care for anything else if it isnt' from Criterion. I'm not too fond of movies today. The Criterion titles are films that have stood the test of time for me and I can rewatch countless times.

Movies aren't what they used to be sadly.
Welcome, Junkie! I couldn't believe that so many films released by Criterion made my 1960s list. I'll expect an even greater number from you

Higher? two of his films are in my top 10, I believe. But to be honest, a film ranked in the 40s could jump to the top ten and vice a versa. I love all those films so much

Have you posted some sort of overall top 20 or something, Sammy?

Welcome! I've only been around this thread for a little while myself. My only issue is it makes me want to buy even more Criterion discs! Which isn't such a bad thing...

Does your number one stay the same?

I've tried making one, but it's a frustrating process. I'll try now..

1. A Clockwork Orange
2. Paris, Texas
3. Three Colors: Red
4. The Tree of Life
5. Sunrise: A Song of Two Humans
6. Persona
7. The Red Shoes
8. Once Upon a Time in America
9. Late Spring
10. Red Desert (gonna watch this one again in an hour and it'll probably move up)

Same thing happens with me. Something I leave out (The Grand Illusion, Taxi Driver, Chinatown) could be placed in there next time I make the list. The top five is pretty definite, though.

Yes! I honestly do not ever envision a film taking Magnolia's place.

That top ten of yours is pretty perfect. Bold move to place such a new movie at that high of a spot. I seriously considered wedging Malick's a Tree of Life into my top 50 (still the most greatest cinema going experience of my life), but I don't think I've gotten to the bottom of it. I've only seen it two times, so maybe after another...

@Great Owl,
Even if I limited it to a top 20 Criterion-released films from the 1960s, the list would be comprised of nothing but masterpieces.

I need to watch Magnolia again. I plan on doing a PTA marathon soon, so.. yeah. Punch Drunk Love remains my favorite of his.

I have trouble placing recent films on my lists, but that's the one film I can't debate on. The only other 21st century film that would be placed on my top 50 is Yi Yi.

YiYi should make my list for the 2000's, definitely. I desperately need to see Yang's other films, especially, A Brighter Summer Day. I hope it is announced for next year.

I could have easily filled my Top 20 of the 1960s with Criterion titles, because there are so many astoundingly good ones.

As the decades draw closer to present-day, though, I find that a lot of favorite films that I grew up watching take precedence. I think that they're all masterpieces, of course, but in a different way.

Masterpieces in a different way. Spoken like a true film lover.

I can't wait to see a list that includes 2001 and Robinson Crusoe on Mars.

Thanks! Yeah, Robocop was my first introduction to Criterion. And it's the only release of the film I have. I've never even picked up the recent Blu Ray releases for it. I kept the Criterion version.

Since, I've picked up Seven Samurai, Yojimbo/Sanjuro, The Battle of Algiers, Hunger, Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, The Colors trilogy, Le Samorai, La Jetee, The Sweet Smell of Success, and on and on!

I'm definitely most looking forward to the Zatoichi boxed set release!! THAT is going to be quite the set for the holidays!!

Default Criterion Collection Discussion

My first Criterion was Chasing Amy. The first Criterion Blu-Ray I bought was Dazed and Confused but the first Criterion BD I saw was The Third Man (Netflix).

I sold my Chasing Amy DVD when I bought the Blu-Ray. I need to buy another copy.

I have heard of Le Samourai but never got around to seeing it before Now that I have seen the extreme enthusiasm many people including yourself have for it and I realize that it's my type of movie, I have ordered the Criterion DVD. Hopefully I will soon be joining the ranks clamoring for its upgrade to blu.
