The Blob didn't age too well, but I thought it was still enjoyable...if you like these little small-town-stories. Quote:

Just don't listen, watch the film for yourself. I happen to be a big fan of Frantisek Vlacil (and Marketa Lazarova in general), so not everyone feels the same way. Some people just don't take to experimental approaches in films the way others do. Conventional story telling it is not.

For those struggling with Marketa Lazarová it might be worth seeking out Vlácil's earlier film The Devils Trap (Dáblova Past). It deals with similar themes and is equally beautiful but is nearly half the length and much more comprehensible on first viewing.

Wow, thanks for this information... I feel like I should have known something like this but this is truly a shocking revelation. Looking back in hindsight, I can now see how Seconds can truly scare someone in a movie theater back in the 1960s, especially if he/she isn't ready for such a blunt and graphic ending. This movie just marked the beginning of a new era for Hollywood, with the new "cinema" of modern-day directors coming out in the late 1960s. I see this film as a contemporary post-modern day classic because it represented the newer cinema that audiences of old were not used to yet. It's one of the earliest known examples of the future onslaught of more shocking films yet to come in Hollywood.

![]() And I may just seek out Vlácil's other films now that you mentioned it. I cannot let one film of a director's permanently turn me off from all of his other work. |

Aside from the titles previously mentioned, there's Cocteau's Orpehus. It was originally part of the Orphic Trilogy boxed set that went OOP; Orpheus is the only one of the three that came back into print.

I still do recommend the film, especially to Spanky, I just don't feel its a masterpiece as many others do. |

Out of their DVDs, I'd say Peeping Tom. Out of their LDs, well...there are far too many titles they released in that format that they lost the rights to that I'd like to see them re-release on Blu-ray, but they are unlikely to get the rights back, like The Asphalt Jungle, The Magnificent Ambersons, Swing Time, Scaramouche, Bad Day at Black Rock, Arsenic and Old Lace, and Cat People. And those are just the ones that haven't been released on BD from anyone else. Of the ones that they might possibly re-acquire the rights to, I'd say it's a toss-up among Breaking the Waves, Silverado, or The Fisher King. |
