400 Blows and the first two Jacques Tati titles were out-of-print for a while before being brought back.

My current ranks for what I own are:

1. Rosemary's baby
2. Devil's Backbone
3. Psycho (obviously not criterion)
3. Night of the Hunter (may be my favorite of the 4 in general, but not necessarily "horror")

What are peoples thoughts on other criterion horror: the blob, island of lost souls, eyes without a face, the uninvited, etc.?
Island Of Lost Souls is a really good horror film, especially in terms of the monster-costumes.
The Blob didn't age too well, but I thought it was still enjoyable...if you like these little small-town-stories.

i would choose RAN since the studiocanal bluray doesnt look that great.
but still they have plenty of bonus features on the disc. (at least something)
Une Femme Est Une Femme. I hope we get to see a HD version sometime.

Just don't listen, watch the film for yourself. I happen to be a big fan of Frantisek Vlacil (and Marketa Lazarova in general), so not everyone feels the same way. Some people just don't take to experimental approaches in films the way others do. Conventional story telling it is not.

For those struggling with Marketa Lazarová it might be worth seeking out Vlácil's earlier film The Devils Trap (Dáblova Past). It deals with similar themes and is equally beautiful but is nearly half the length and much more comprehensible on first viewing.

Actually, with Dragon Gate Inn, it might be fun to have a 2-disc set that had both King Hu's and Tsui Hark's versions.
I would gladly take The Fate of Lee Khan as well.

They could always release the work of Hou Hsiao-hsien, which I believe they are rumored to have a couple from the Wellspring pick-ups. A blu-ray with the correct aspect ratio of The Puppetmaster would be the top release of the year if they ever do it.

Wow, thanks for this information... I feel like I should have known something like this but this is truly a shocking revelation. Looking back in hindsight, I can now see how Seconds can truly scare someone in a movie theater back in the 1960s, especially if he/she isn't ready for such a blunt and graphic ending. This movie just marked the beginning of a new era for Hollywood, with the new "cinema" of modern-day directors coming out in the late 1960s. I see this film as a contemporary post-modern day classic because it represented the newer cinema that audiences of old were not used to yet. It's one of the earliest known examples of the future onslaught of more shocking films yet to come in Hollywood.

Yes, Marketa can be confusing the first time through. But even then, then visuals are great.

My favorite story from the supplements... the cast went to a costume ball, still dressed in the costumes they'd worn (and hadn't cleaned) for weeks.

Interesting, I have The Turin Horse sitting here but haven't watched it yet. I still need some time to recover from M.L. though first.

And I may just seek out Vlácil's other films now that you mentioned it. I cannot let one film of a director's permanently turn me off from all of his other work.

I was able to get a used but for the most part mint copy of Last Year at Marienbad for only $15.49.

On a related note, does anyone know when this was announced to be Out of Print?

Aside from the titles previously mentioned, there's Cocteau's Orpehus. It was originally part of the Orphic Trilogy boxed set that went OOP; Orpheus is the only one of the three that came back into print.

Not true. I prefer films that tell a story in an unconventional or "experimental" manner. Just because I do not take to one film, that doesn't mean I dislike all rule-breaking/ground-breaking films.

I still do recommend the film, especially to Spanky, I just don't feel its a masterpiece as many others do.

I think you'll have a better time with Turin Horse (which made my top 20 of last year, actually). It's undeniably a work of art. I hope to see it again soon with the Jonathan Rosenbaum commentary...even if it is only an hour long.

Out of their BDs, I'd say Le cercle rouge (only because I don't have a copy, and I do have a copy of their BD of The Third Man).

Out of their DVDs, I'd say Peeping Tom.

Out of their LDs, well...there are far too many titles they released in that format that they lost the rights to that I'd like to see them re-release on Blu-ray, but they are unlikely to get the rights back, like The Asphalt Jungle, The Magnificent Ambersons, Swing Time, Scaramouche, Bad Day at Black Rock, Arsenic and Old Lace, and Cat People. And those are just the ones that haven't been released on BD from anyone else.

Of the ones that they might possibly re-acquire the rights to, I'd say it's a toss-up among Breaking the Waves, Silverado, or The Fisher King.

Yes, same here... I'm with you on this too... I don't have to love every experimental film out there... and lets not forget that some experimental films are failures on all levels. Just cause its so "out there" and unconventional and from a foreign country doesn't mean its still automatically a great film or masterpiece. There are plenty of rule-breaking films that just don't succeed.
