I love the films of Powell & Pressburger and Wes Anderson, but I really didn't care for The Tales of Hoffmann, nor Rushmore. I know Rushmore is considered one of Anderson's best, but I didn't really care for it. The Royal Tenenbaums is one of the best films ever made, though.

Kevin, Lancaster is probably my favourite actor ever, and his body of work in the 50s/60s is pretty untouchable. The Leopard, The Train, Birdman of Alcatraz and The Swimmer are all classics that he carries with brilliant performances.
I kind of second the Brazil sentiment here. There's definitely some cool parts to it, but I thought it had some pacing issues over the second half for sure, and the Monty Python derived brand of humour isn't completely my thing. Excited for The Great Beauty! |

I watched this the other night, before it expired on Netflix. My initial impression during the early part of the film was "Dear God, I didn't think it was possible to have so many vapid characters in one movie". But once it became clear that he's making mock of the club culture (but with some amount of genuine affection, as the best parodies always have), the film becomes enjoyable as hell.

I am considering adding 2 old classics to my Criterion Blu-ray collection. I own neither as DVD.
Sweet Smell of Success On The Waterfront The latter is expensive and I plan to keep an eye for a good price on e-Bay or elsewhere. But any opinions on the transfers and extras? |

I hope everyone is having a great day. Just want to share my thoughts on some Criterion titles that I recently watched:
Summer with Monika This is my least favorite Bergman so far. I thoroughly enjoyed The Seventh Seal and Wild Strawberries. I wasn't expecting Summer with Monika to be like those films. I didn't like Monika's character and found myself feeling more sympathy for Harry. Sisters Margot Kidder's "French" accent almost took me out of the film for a while, but I hung in there. I enjoyed seeing one of De Palma's early works and Margot Kidder before Superman. The influence of Hitchcock on De Palma was evident. I look forward to watching Blow Out and Body Double soon. Andrei Rublev This is a very interesting movie. I can only compare it to the other Tarkovsky film I have seen, which is Solaris. I enjoyed this more than Solaris for some reason. Everything just resonated more with me while I watched Andrei Rublev. Knife in the Water I have enjoyed every Roman Polanski film I have seen. I have only seen Rosemary's Baby, Chinatown, and Knife in the Water though. It's been a while since I watched Repulsion, so I need to watch that one again. Contempt This is the first movie by Jean Luc-Godard that I have liked. I have seen Breathless, Vivre Sa Vie, and Band of Outsiders. Contempt is his first movie that almost worked for me on all levels. The acting, direction, music...are great. Carnival of Souls This movie creeped me out. It is amazing how scary and chilling this movie is with a limited amount of gore. I don't normally like scary movies, but I can understand why this one is a classic. Le Notti Bianche This is a good movie although it is slightly depressing. Great performances by the two lead actors. Also, the kissing scene at the end is included in the film reel shown at the end of Cinema Paradiso. Le Havre This is the first film that I have seen by Aki Kaurismaki. It is a quirky film that becomes increasingly bizzare towards the end. It's a good type of bizzare. Also, I noticed that Kaurismaki or maybe the cinematographer carried over the colors of the port into the buildings. The walls in the hospital are an aquamarine color, which is unusual. The Fantastic Mr. Fox (Upcoming Title?) Interesting animation style. I enjoyed the dialogue more than the plot itself. Rushmore is still my favorite Wes Anderson film. I'm sleep deprived right now, so please excuse any bad grammar/spelling. Last edited by Meek12345; 11-02-2013 at 12:41 PM. |
