The Complete Jean Vigo

Nobody ever talks about the Jean Vigo films in this forum, but I've always wanted to see L'Atalante.
I listed The Complete Jean Vigo in my Top 10 Criterions to own a week or two ago. After watching L'Atalante on TCM last year, I had to own the collection. I always get sad when I think about all of Jean Vigo's work fitting on one disc. He unfortunately died at such a young age, but he still has an impressive filmography.

When people were doing their top 10s, I was surprised that the Vigo set wasn't on more. I've seen L'Atalante many times, but every time it gets to the point of, well...that point...., in a silent room at home, I still feel compelled to say aloud, "Don't DO that!" I love the youth and relationship truth in the film.

And Zero de conduite is visual poetry with a narrative. What an atmosphere.

Even A propo de Nice is worthwhile, more in the mode of 20s/30s European experimental film. Fun and engaging.

And all three in one box set is one of Criterion's best releases. One of only a handful of Crits I have picked up on the day of release.

Film struck me the same way. For the record though I've never seen Salo.

Cristian Mungiu is listed on Criterions site now. Hopefully 4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days will be announced shortly.

The thing a lot of people don't seem to get about Altman is how revolutionary he was for his time and place (70's/Hollywood). His films may not seem revolutionary now, because many of those techniques are now commonplace, but he was a true visionary.
have to say i agree. i adore mccabe and mrs. miller. in fact, its probably my favorite altman film. sounds like the OP saw a crappy copy. i've got the old dvd somewhere, i rewatched it maybe 6 months ago and found the audio tolerable.

Hmmm... I'm not starting to question my decision, but getting concerned. I do think I'll be ok though, as long as it isn't as graphic and sadistic as Salo.

Are these just your unwatched Blus, or was there a method to picking this line up?

Great plan.. I should do this. Though there are way too many unwatched I have currently in my new arrivals section. Maybe I should just take a few vacation days.

That's the other reason I'm doing this: I have a lot of unwatched films in my collection, so I'll be catching up. I would be watching SOAD, but my brother's holding me up. He's on the phone.

Thanks, some of those were upgrades from dvds while they were so cheap, i.e. the LOTR blus. And that's a nice haul yourself.

I really want to pick up Investigation of a Citizen Under Suspicion in the B1G1 sale, but I can't think of another title to pair with it that I don't already own (on either BD or DVD) and that I really want.

So, I figure that I will just get the BD release of a DVD title that I already own. Does anybody have any thoughts as to which of the following represents the best upgrade from the DVD version to BD?

Criterion DVD releases:
- Rushmore
- Videodrome
- Double Life of Veronique

Non-Criterion DVD releases:
- 8 1/2
- Wings of Desire
- Being John Malkovich
- Shallow Grave
- Rosemary's Baby
- Devil's Backbone

I'd say those are your best bets. The Criterion DVD's I own are still quite excellent, PQ wise.

Trivia: "Shoot the Piano Player" is one Bob Dylan's favorite films... If not his very favorite.

I think it's pretty great too.
I'm currently obsessed with Dylan's 115th Dream. Great song .
