So I just finished watching Nashville and I gotta ask, why the hell was Jeff Goldblum even in the movie? He literally didn't say a word the entire movie.

Why was Arnold Schwarzenegger in The Long Goodbye? He literally didn't say a word the entire movie.

You have to remember that Nashville was, "literally", the third movie that Goldblum was ever in (The Long Goodbye was Schwarzenegger's second). It's not like he was a big star that Altman inexplicably put in the movie. He was this young unknown that was given a small part. Goldblum was in Altman's previous movie, California Split, too. I'm guessing Altman liked him and wanted to use him again. Altman had a stable of actors he liked to use over and over again.

I mean, why was was his character in the movie? I'm sure he's supposed to signify something but I don't know what.

I hope Kindergarten Cop is announced for their April releases and that it's not a prank this time around.

Their "3 Reasons" videos can make anything look pretentious.

I bought Investigation of a Citizen Above Suspicion from Amazon yesterday. I guess I will receive it in the mail sometime next week even with the slower free super saver shipping. This movie is a blind buy for me, but I have a good feeling about it. I plan to save it as the last film in my end of the year Criterion marathon, which includes the following films:

The Night of the Hunter
Sweet Smell of Success
Blow Out
Pale Flower
The Complete Jean Vigo
Godzilla
Three Outlaw Samurai
To Be or Not to Be

Also, has anyone watched all 25 Zatoichi films on blu-ray yet? I have only seen the first 9 films on youtube and enjoyed them all quite a bit. Are 10-25 great films as well? Thanks in advance for your help!

Because he didn't have speaking English lines in 1973. Sports documentary "Pumping Iron", that introduced him, wasn't for another four years, so he just showed up in movies to play "Athletic gym bodybuilder", as he did in "Scavenger Hunt".
(And we're only just NOW seeing the undubbed version of "Hercules in New York".)

But then, it can also make anything pretentious look like an actual movie.

The Great Owl's Picks for Best Criterion Release of 2013

1st Place: On the Waterfront
2nd Place: La Notte
3rd Place: Seconds
4th Place: Ministry of Fear
5th Place: A Man Escaped

Best Criterion blind buy of 2013: La Notte

Most Eagerly Awaited Criterion release of 2014 (so far): Foreign Correspondent

Yes, this was tough. So many great choices!

Contrary to popular assumption, I am well aware that the Criterion Collection sometimes includes color films, and that many of these color films are worth watching. None of them made the cut with the above list, though.

I'm still not ready to vote.

I gotta get through Nashville first. So many definitive releases this year it's really hard to pick a top 5.

The Blob
Safety Last!
The Man Who Knew Too Much
The Spy Who Came in From the Cold
Cassavetes

Blind Buy: Frances Ha

2014: Thief

Why The Blob? I don't really know. It's not a great movie, it's not really a major nostalgiac or childhood favorite...I just had so freaking much fun sinking into it (and a bottle of cabernet but I honestly think it was mostly the movie).

Frances Ha was very nearly Safety Last! I really, really enjoyed both and in both cases the enjoyment was also of types I didn't expect. I didn't expect to be delighted by Frances Ha or unnerved (that's how men say scared) by Safety Last! but there you go.

And Thief had a lot of competition but the scenes on Lincoln Avenue were the tie-breaker. I used to at a bar down the street from where a few scenes were shot and I can't wait to see that stretch of Lincoln between Belden and Webster the way it used to be.

The Blob did not make my cut, but it's one of the most endlessly rewatchable entries in the Criterion queue. I love that blob, and I love the beautiful high definition transfer of the movie. It was a pleasure to double-dip for the Blu-ray upgrade.

The Spy Who Came in from the Cold just barely missed my above top five. It's brilliant across the board.

Ministry of Fear probably deserves even higher ranking on my own list. It's one of the most outright fun titles of the year, and the visuals are incredible (Yes, Marjorie Reynolds, I'm talking about you.).

I wish I could have included On The Waterfront in my list, but La Notte was such an incredible surprise - not only the film itself, but the transfer was beautiful!

I'm so amazed at the complete lack of enthusiasm here for Marketa Lazarová. IMO by far one of the best films in the collection.

1. Marketa Lazarová
2. Ivans Childhood
3. On the Waterfront
4. Gate of Hell
5. Zatoichi

I placed Marketa Lazarova at number 1 as well. Problem with these lists is that most of us haven't seen all we'd love to of by the time we have to fill these in. There's plenty I'm sure who could potentially push any of my top 5 out but yeah, Marketa Lazarova hit number 1. It's such a beautiful and eerie movie. The transfer and audio are outstanding and there's quite a bit of high quality extras.
