I find the same with a lot of TV shows now as well... not sure why that is now, almost as if they muff it up on purpose.

i'll throw my hat in here, too.. I have subtitles on nearly all the time. don't know if its because I don't have my HT properly set up... more likely is the fact that I don't want to miss a word of dialogue -especially if its an older film like the one Owl just mentioned - Scarlet Street where they use dialogue that his since been retired or in the British Hitchcock films where they use language that is not commonplace here in the States.

I use the subtitles whenever I'm watching a new movie for the first time, provided that the subtitle option is available. I usually fare well without them, and, in fact, I usually forget that the subtitles are on after a few minutes into a film, but they're great for catching missed dialogue.

The lack of subtitles is my one and only grievance against Olive Films Blu-rays, but I've had no problems following the dialogue while watching the recent titles during my ongoing "film noir marathon." (I still have a good 15 film noir Blu-rays left in the stack to watch, but I'm expecting to be done around the beginning of the New Year.)

ok. cool. now I don't feel so silly or so deaf being that I do this, too! I mentioned it before somewhere in this forum, but the 'most unfortunate lack of subtitles on a blu ray disc' award goes to Carlos. I could use the help while having to make out the English language in 20 different accents.

I had trouble on the English language versions of the first two movies in the 3 Films by Roberto Rossellini Starring Ingrid Bergman box set, because multiple languages figure into the equation during a handful of scenes. I fared a lot better while watching the Italian language versions of the films.

curious. thanks!
Churulata is more lyrical than The Big City which is tradition vs. modernity vs. gender roles.

do they have an English overdub?

I'm not sure because I haven't seen it, but I think that there is an English language version of The Leopard, too. I guess that it is just an overdub track. ? or was dialogue rerecorded?

Those are on my list for next week, I may do the same based on your "advice." Really looking forward to these! Also picked up the Eclipse Early Bergman set that I want to watch next week.

Crossing my fingers I get a lot of films in. (the wife isn't always a fan of sitting on the couch for 10+ taking in film after film)
Unfortunately, all of my film watching through the end of the month is going to be on Netflix. A metric shïtload of their offerings (including about 60 in my queue) are expiring on January 1st. I probably won't get through all of the expiring ones in my queue by then, but I'm giving it my best shot.

Funny, I just got around to getting a hearing check (I'm 60, and I figured I'd better see where I stand after a lifetime of rock 'n' roll), and while I have a slight issue with higher frequencies, my hearing is within normal parameters.

Anyway, I often have problems discerning dialogue, and depend on subtitling or captioning to fill in the gaps. I strongly suspect that a good deal of the problem is with bad audio engineering, where there's too much emphasis on the music and foley tracks, to the point where they are stomping over the dialogue tracks. It seems like this is mainly a contemporary US film/TV issue, as I seem to have fewer problems with vintage movies (and TV) and foreign movies.

Though with respect to the latter, I still depend on subtitling, obviously. Not to mention that not speaking the native languages, I can't really know whether I'm hearing the dialogue "properly" or not.

The first two films of the Rossellini/Bergman set have English and Italian language versions, with subtitles. The Leopard has the original Italian version and an American cut. I have not watched the American cut of The Leopard, since the longer Italian version covers it all for me.

I have about 300 moveis in my queue right now, and a full 500 in my disc queue. I'll never catch up.. not until I retire at least. But that's something to look forward to I guess.

41 here and quite a few rock concerts under my belt, mostly stadning down front or right in front of the speakers. And many a day spent in my buddy's car with Hard Rock and Metal blarring.... ah the days of a misspent youth. When I went for my hearing check, was sure I had some damage, especially in the higher frequencies, but to my surprise I was in good shape.

And I tend to agree about new shows and movies, they seem to be more prone to dialogue issues... I think they try to take too much advantage of 7.1 and all the "cool" things that can be done with sound and mixes now. So, I just flip on the CC and let it roll.

I've watched The Leopard three times, but I've yet to watch the American cut for the same reason.

Still... I'm interested in hearing Burt Lancaster's actual voice in the English version. Perhaps next time...

I've got 5 days off for Christmas and a whole bunch of new blu-rays to watch. Laura, Wild River, Johnny Guitar, Things to Come, Ivan's Childhood (haven't gotten around to watching the blu-ray upgrade yet), and plan on revisiting Kagemusha.

I really want to rewatch Novecento one of these days, a fascinating film that has Burt Lancaster in a comparable role to his in The Leapord. I am not looking forward to viewing some of the more disturbing scenes of the film though.... My goodness is Donald Sutherland's character horrifying in that film.

Do you all think that Criterion could/would ever release Kill Bill:The Whole Bloody Affair? As far as I know, there aren't any Miramax films in the Criterion collection right now. Is a partnership between Miramax and Criterion non-existent right now? It would be nice to have a blu-ray of Kill Bill with significant special features and a substantial book or booklet. However, Quentin Tarantino seems to be stingy with contributing special features for his films. Maybe Criterion could pry them out of Tarantino like they are trying to do with David Lynch right now.

PSA, folks...
WBShop.com is offering $5 off purchases of $25 or more with free shipping.
their prices are pretty good, too. Sunset Boulevard for $11.59. I've got that paired w/ The Talented Mr. Ripley. don't know if that film has fanfare. anyway, one of my all time favs. of course, I'm 42 cents short of $25 though..

seems like a good deal though and thought I'd share.

FIRST!!! "Ace in the Hole" is hinted.

Maybe it's the one from 2004, so we get something new.
