I went crazy again today at Barnes & Noble and ended up using 3 coupons on 3 Criterion purchases.
I bought the World Cinema Project (box set) with a 25% off coupon for $50 + tax. Then I swung by another store and used a 25% off coupon on Autumn Sonata and the same 30% coupon I had already used (this time I asked the young cashier to punch in the code) on Pale Flower! I got the last 2 for $15 and $16 + tax. Wow, what a great day for Criterions. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() PS. Thank you Hariseldon and Lemonski for the 25% coupons! ![]() PPS. I finally learned a lesson about these coupons. Never print them out! Always load the graphic on your smartphone and show the cashier it so he/she manually enters the code! It's the best way for these coupons to work, especially if the coupon was already used! Last edited by jw007; 12-23-2013 at 02:03 AM. |

Throne of Blood Blu-ray REVIEW
![]() Fans of this film should be very pleased with the technical presentation. The film looks very good on Blu-ray after the 2K resto. More importantly, the audio is dramatically improved. (Watch the ceremony where Washizu and Miki are rewarded). ![]() Pro-B |

![]() I have the very problematic BFI DVD, but always held back on getting the Criterion DVD because I wanted to wait for an HD upgrade. I now eagerly await! Last edited by ravenus; 12-23-2013 at 09:13 AM. |

I usually hold off for Criterion sales, only grabbing "Must Have" titles without a sale in sight. But Throne of Blood is one of those titles. I can't wait to add it to my collection. Especially since I'm currently in the midst of one of my "Shakespearean cinema" phases.

I was amazed at how vivid the colors were on this release. I sat in the dark watching this with my mouth open at how amazing it looked. So hard to believe.

Christmas vacation movie marathon has started. The first 4 are non-Criterion, but are made up of a suggestion from here about The Man from Earth, and then from my discussions here about Westerns, Man with No Name Trilogy.
I've finished The Man from Earth and must say I really enjoyed the film. It was a nice non-scifi, scifi film. I do love the single location/set movies, and how it makes you feel like a part of the film, as if you are in the scene. Thanks to those that recommended this movie. Starting A Fistful of Dollars now. After the trilogy, I have the following to watch today, and the rest of the week to 10 days of my vacation(in alpha order): 3 Films by Roberto Rossellini Starring Ingrid Bergman John Cassavetes: Five Films Gold Rush In the Realm of the Senses Investigation of a Citizen Above Suspicion Kiss Me Deadly Repo Man Seconds The Spy Who Came in from the Cold The Thin Red Line Things to Come Three Colors Tokyo Story Early Bergman Eclipse Set When Horror Came to Shochiku Eclipse Set Phew.. not sure I have time unless I don't sleep, but I'm giving it the old college try (plus I have to head to BN and pickup my Pale Flowers order. And I have a few more non-Criterion to watch as well: Apocalypse Now: Full Disclosure Before Midnight Chariots of Fire Citizen Kane: 70th Ann. Ultimate Metropolis North by Northwest Outlaw Josey Wales Streetcar Named Desire: 60th Anniversary Third Man (Studio Canal release) I think I have enough for my break... ![]() ![]() |

Hmmmmm, marathon viewings over the holidays...I have something of that sort half in mind for New Year's Day.
Figuring to be hung over on the couch but reasonably alert I'm thinking that might a good day for Aviation Fest. Wings Battle of Britian The Right Stuff Apollo 13 (not sure about this one) For All Mankind Not sure if I'll split it over days but I like the lineup. Oh, and time, mood and consideration for neighbor permitting I might top it off with something light and (ambien pun alert) airy like Top Gun. |

I was thinking of moving it toward the top. It may slip in before I start my Criterion run. I've just bought way too many movies lately.... like that could happen.

A holiday movie marathon... I'm good for that.
I'll be working every day except for on the official holidays this week and next week, since my family lives close by, and since I like the slack atmosphere in the office when I'm basically the only person here. I've always enjoyed working during Christmas/New Year week, because the few people who do come into the office are always in a cheerful mood, people always bring food into the office, and the vibe is pretty laid back. I always wait until late January or early February to take my personal leave time, because that's when everyone else in the office is grumpy with the winter weather and having received their post-holiday credit card bills. Anyway, I took a break from my "Film Noir Marathon" this past weekend to watch Mary Poppins, It's a Wonderful Life, and Saving Mr. Banks. Two five-star classic films and one slightly-schmaltzy, but nonetheless engaging new flick that I was able to see for free at the theater. Last night, I returned to film noir with Secret Beyond the Door and The File on Thelma Jordan. It's great to be back in "Dark City" again. I've saved my most eagerly-awaited film noir Blu-rays for last, so here's what's on my agenda for the next week or two... The Big Combo Plunder Road Private Hell 36 Crashout Force of Evil City That Never Sleeps Shack Out on 101 Body and Soul The Hitch-Hiker The Postman Always Rings Twice (1946) Panic in the Streets Pursued I'll fit these movies, in no particular order, into my schedule as I make my way to see family and such. The last six Criterion flicks that I bought last week at the end of the 50% off sale will have to wait until 2014. |

None of this is locked in but I'm currently leaning toward the more chronological order.
Depends on what time of day I start and whether I decide to split it. Some of those titles are apartment appropriate even in the wee hours. Others...not so much ![]() |

I watched City That Never Sleeps late Saturday night, early Sunday morning and that was the perfect time to watch it. It's not great and I would never tell somebody they have to run out and get it but it's a really, really solid B-level Late Late Show kind of melodrama.
I had a lot of fun with it and if you can watch it after midnight that's definitely the way to go with it. |

Speaking of movie marathons, I watched Die Hard last night for a marathon I started on the 10th. I call it the "Keeping My Sanity Until Christmas" marathon. Since the 10th is when presents started going under the tree, I decided to watch one film each day to keep my sanity until Christmas. However, last week I was busy, so I didn't watch 6 of the films. So I'm watching 2 films today, 2 films on Xmas eve, and one film everyday after Christmas until I finish them. Today I'll be watching Seconds and 8 1/2

I have to say that The Enforcer and Hell's Half Acre are my favorite underrated treasures of the Olive noir lot so far, but they're all a lot of fun. |
