Thanks for sharing your review. Throne of Blood is sitting in my stack of unwatched Blu-ray purchases, and I am looking forward to seeing the high definition presentation, because I used to love watching the old Criterion DVD edition.

Throne of Blood is quite brilliant, and it's always struck me as the closest that Kurosawa ever came to exploring the horror genre.

For sure! The scenes with the evil spirit are quite effective and haunting.

A Brief History Of Time, Il Sorpasso, Master of the House & Riot In Cell Block 11 will be also released in DVD-only editions. Breaking The Waves will only be released through the already announced DF release.
The DVD-only release of La grande bellezza is also available for pre-order on Amazon.com.

Was just watching the PBS special where Ethan Hawke tries to figure out Shakespeare's Macbeth--
And while they didn't show any Kurosawa, from the film versions they did show, I'll agree, there's no more arresting image of Macbeth's ultimate downfall than
[Show spoiler]a stray samurai arrow through the neck.

Like Tony Soprano says, you never hear it coming.

(As for Kurosawa horror, I'd heard rumors he'd thought about doing a feudal-Japanese "Masque of the Red Death", but haven't been able to confirm it.)

Universal is known to release inferior transfers for films that look a lot better when other companies release them. Especially when a specialty label goes head to head with Universal. See examples in The Criterion Collection:

Being John Malkovich
Dazed and Confused
The Game
The Last Temptation of Christ
Videodrome

Let's just say I wouldn't be shocked if Universal's releases end up looking substantially worse than MoC's. I'm not saying they necessarily will...but I'll sure as hell be waiting for reviews and screenshots before pulling the trigger, despite the excellence of the films themselves.

And Thief & La Vie de Boheme arrived today. Don't know if it was morg999's query that got things rolling or not, whatever did the trick, I'm grateful.

Reverse Shot has been raving about this one. Might snag it when the flash sale occurs.

I thought those pining for The Long Goodbye would like to know that the UK Arrow disc plays fine on my Panasonic with the 'pop-up/top menu' remote trick.

Depending on who you ask it's either a really cool, gritty 70s take on Raymond Chandler or a complete mess.

I'm very strongly in the first camp.

I'm in the "mess" camp, but that depends whether you look at it as an Altman 70's-LA film that just happens to have a character with the same name as somebody Bogart played once.

Hey John,

It isn't coming up most likely because your personal settings on the site are not set properly. Go here:

https://www.blu-ray.com/community/settings.php

...and click on all flags so that you can see reviews, product info and news from all territories/markets. (This is where you personal settings are).

Default Criterion Flash Sale

Do you all think the flash sale will occur on Valentine's day or on Criterion's 30th anniversary date? By the way, which day in February will be the 30th anniversary? Whenever I try to google it, I only get 1984. I go to the Criterion website almost every day, but it would be nice to get a good idea of when the 24 hour sale will occur. I hope that I will be able to pick up the Zatoichi set. Thanks in advance for your help!

MoC (UK) will be releasing Ace in the Hole in April. So we might be seeing that title in blu from Criterion this year.

I guessing it will be on the 18th or later that week.

We received a Criterion hint for Ace in the Hole during a newsletter, so I'm expecting it in a few months. Between this and the upcoming Universal release of Double Indemnity, my Billy Wilder Blu-ray collection will be a lot nicer by the end of 2014.
