The Criterion Blu-ray of it was my first Criterion disc, and I have a love/hate relationship with it. I love it because it's one amazing package, and I hate it because it started the Criterion addiction.
Haha, I don't even remember my first Blu-ray Criterion.

I think it was The Royal Tenenbaums on release week because it was under $20 at Best Buy.

My Deep Discount order of IAMMMMW, The Long Day Closes, Thief, and Rififi showed today. Something to tide me over until the flash sale orders show up (along with the sizeable backlog I have build up ).

Speaking of Kurosawa, I still haven't seen Seven Samurai!
I love Breathless and Vivre sa vie to death, but those works are arguably much better films. All four are also far more dense and "difficult" than the works you've seen though.

I kept putting it off because I'm really wary of longer films dragging by, too many films that were "just OK" (IMO) could've been made so much better with some better editing and tightening up of the final product. That being said Seven Samurai was not one of those films. The film had a great pace, kept me interested and didn't make me feel like I was watching a longer movie.

Probably my 2nd favorite Kurosawa film that I own. While I only own 9 (soon to be 10), being in the top 20% isn't bad! (well it'll be 20% when film #10 arrives, assuming #10 doesn't knock it down to the Bronze Medal)

Last flash sale and this flash sale, I got my order in both times in the first few minutes (less than 5 IIRC) and I got my shipping well after lots of other people. Still no shipping notification on my order as well so you aren't alone! But since it's been 24 hours or so, not worried about it.

My first watching of Thief right now as immediately tied it with Collateral as my favorite Mann film. Such a fascinating story, great acting, impressive directing, and a wonderful pacing.

I didn't think I was going to like it as much as I did but I did. Wow!

Awesome! I'm definitely more excited now!

That makes me feel a lot better about seeing it now.

I honestly don't mind long films, even though the longest that I've seen had been The Godfather, Part II and I wasn't particularly keen on it.

That being said, I really look forward to checking out Seven Samurai sometime later this week or next week.

That movie has always been a personal favorite, and the Criterion Blu-ray knocked it into my top 5 films of all time. It really needs the startling visuals to enhance the story, and the DVD was severely lacking in that aspect.

What did you think of the ending Scottie? It's my favorite ending of all time!

I hope you enjoy them. They certainly are films you have to be in the right head space for though. I think that's why Alphaville, 2 or 3 Things, and Made in USA didn't have the same effect on me as the rest of his 60s work.

Same situation here. My orders of 2 and 4 pieces have both shipped, but the order of 5 individual titles and a 3 film boxset has not.

The ending was fantastic. So much suspense and awesomeness in just 10 minutes.

Thanks! That is definitely good to know. I wonder if Criterion will ever re-release 2 or 3 on Blu-ray.

Oh definitely. It has such an awesome soundtrack, especially during the heist.

I don't have any complaints about anything in the movie. Normally I feel let down after watching a hyped movie, however I loved everything about Thief. The score was everything I had heard it would be, the cinematography was incredible. From the street lights to the sunrise over the water (Where Caan talks with the fisherman), to the light show during the heist it was all just a visual treat!

I was really impressed with how Robert Prosky pulled off his role. Growing up, my main exposure to him was as Wally in The Great Outdoors so seeing him in Thief was surprising. A fantastic ending as well, far too many great movies have endings that just.. don't fit which really hurt the overall enjoyment of the movie. (Ex every Heist movie from the 30's-50's it seems had the same ending in a nut shell).

I know exactly what you mean. Either the ending of the film has an unfitting twist, it's cut short, or something entirely else.

Glad to hear you liked it!

Just watched King Rat last night on TCM. I think it's one hell of a movie. Last time I saw it was way back in highschool. Do you guys think it would be a good addition to the CC?

Based on earlier conversation, I really was not a fan of Breathless when I first watched it about a month ago. I didn't connect with the main characters, and the dialogue, which I thought was non-enhancing to my experience, seemed to drag. As of now I don't have any interest in revisiting it to see if I missed what all the hype is about. It is what it is.
On another note, I blind bought Thief during the B2G1 deal a bit ago strictly because of this forum. I can't wait to watch it this weekend. Also, just received the incredible package that is Foreign Correspondent. Honda Classic and Criterions, all weekend!!

Can someone help me? There is a thread or group floating around that deals with Criterion viewing and discussion. Does anyone know the name of it?

The cinematography is definitely impeccable!

The sunrise shot you were referring to is one of my favorite shots in any film, it's pure beauty.
