And fingers crossed for Godzilla, I love Godzilla and the Toho Ltd films, I just hope this can live up. I will say the trailers make it look great. And with cgi, it should look great (though I prefer a guy in a rubber suit myself).
I love the rubber suits as well, but a CG Godzilla seems like the perfect route with this film, he looks MASSIVE!

Oh, that's a bummer, did you enjoy it up to that point?

I can't believe I bought 6 Blu-rays during the Flash Sale, in two separate orders. What can I say but that I was caught up in the excitement of it all?

Just finished Thief and I wish had seen this movie much earlier in life, just so I could've enjoyed before now. But, it's nice to watch some movies when you're older, especially ones like this where you can really appreciate every detail, and have a kind of connection with the protagonist's journey.

So I start by saying I am a Michael Mann, and I love Heat, The Insider, Ali, Collateral, Last of the Mohicans, and now Thief. I think he is one of the great directors of our time. I love his framing, the way he incorporates the surroundings and how he uses the camera in ways that really brings you into the movie.

When it comes to Thief, it's great to see the beginnings of his work and style. The opening 10 minutes
[Show spoiler]where there is no dialogue and Caan actually breaks into the safe are just amazing.
The way he use's Tangerine Dream's score flows perfectly with all that is going on.

Cut to the dinner scene. James Caan delivers such a great performance, pouring out emotions by just telling it like he sees it, and how he feels. There are so many scenes that have come since, that take so much from that scene. Much like the scene where he
[Show spoiler]tells Jessie that he wants to date her, I see many movies since that come to mind, specifically Chasing Amy
. It's just such a great performance by Caan... really by all. And I loved seeing a young
[Show spoiler]Dennis Farina.

As for Tangerine Dream.... perfect. The score is so 80's, and yet timeless. It really sets the mood for the film from the first minute. And after learning that they were allowed to do what they want, makes it so much more interesting. Bringing in ethereal sounds, some Pink Floyd "The Wall" influences, along with synths and even background noises, it all blends together so well. It's just an amazing score.

Finally, the relationship with Jessie. So much to say, but don't want to spoil anything. But the end sequence really just brings it all home... allowing him to finish the film. I can feel all that is going on, and it hits home somehow, even though I've never been through what he has, I feel like I have.

So all in all, amazing... a great addition to my collection. I highly recommend Thief to anyone.

Yes, he does look insanely awesome, and extremely massive.

And yes, it was a bummer, took me right out of the movie. But yes, it was great up to then, and then still as great when I finally got back to the movie.

Well, I'm glad you enjoyed it!

Plus, the Criterion Blu-ray is the best (and IMO only) way to watch Thief. The film didn't even crack my top 100 when I watched it multiple times on DVD, but on Blu-ray, it's simply astonishing.

Mine hasn't shipped but that's ok. I've been Blu-free for close to 3 weeks now. Not by choice but due to my ailing ancient HDTV awaiting parts to come in. I've gone back in time by watching my old CRT and DVDs. Having a shiny new Blu-ray show up in the mail and just sitting there would be cruel and inhumane punishment IMO.

yeah it really looked and sounded simply amazing. I may post my own review of the blu-ray later on when I have some more free time.

Awesome to see you enjoyed this film as well. Mann is such an awesome director and I still have yet to find another director with his style and panache.

Can anyone point me to the place that post pics of the criterion covers inside and out? I knew there was a site that did it but I can't seem to find it anymore

It's just such an amazing film, with so much intensity and pain, it really one of my favorite movies of late. I'm trying to decide if I want to watch the remake.
I'd say that HOUSEMAID is by far the best in the set, although I also liked DRY SUMMER quite a bit and thought A RIVER CALLED TITAS was pretty good if a bit drawn out -- it's almost like two separate films that eventually connect, but the cinematography is gorgeous.

TOUKI BOUKI was okay I thought, but will need to see it again to get a better perspective, and TRANCES was interesting but unless you're really into esoteric ethnic Middle-Eastern music some of the performance sequences will seem to go on way too long -- the interviews and conversations are the best parts. REDES was worth seeing and had some nice photography but was a bit heavy-handed.

Certainly looking forward to volume 2 in the set (and hope it contains the Egyptian titles they've restored for the project -- my home theatre décor will explain this).

I watched The Great Beauty last night. It was a good film and I enjoyed it enough, but it's nowhere near as good as a Fellini film.

I am pretty sure Criterion still has the rights, so is there any chance of Le Deuxieme Souffle coming to Blu Ray? If not, I probably should have grabbed the DVD during the Flash Sale since it sells for high prices, even used.

I felt the same way after watching Thief for the first time. I grew up enjoying Michael Mann's Miami Vice show, and some of his early films (Manhunter, in particular), so Thief would have fit right in.

Props to Criterion for making such a superb edition available to us right now, though!

Who has the rights to G.W. Pabst's Pandora's Box? I own the criterion release on DVD and I love it! But owning it on blu-ray would be amazing. Especially since Criterion would remaster it again and give as an even better transfer. So I am wondering, why don't they release it? Did they lose the rights to it?

From what I've been able to find, Janus/CC are still listed.
